Michael Ryan and Paddy Bradley were two tailors<br />
on King Mountain. They did not own and operate<br />
shops <strong>the</strong>re but followed <strong>the</strong> practice of <strong>the</strong> period<br />
of travelling from farm to farm with <strong>the</strong>ir tailoring<br />
gear.<br />
Origin in New England. .. tin pedlars sometimes<br />
travelled 1200 to 1500 miles from base, even to<br />
Canada. .. tin utensils and tiles. .. tiles fashioned<br />
into patterns. .. used on ceilings of kitchens and<br />
dining rooms in many hotels. Dunn House tiled<br />
outside walls anc:i painted green.<br />
The first toll-gate, on <strong>the</strong> road going northward out<br />
of Hull, on <strong>the</strong> west side of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gatineau</strong> River was<br />
at Wrightville. .. <strong>the</strong> second was at <strong>the</strong> newer<br />
Chelsea, kept by Gardner Church.<br />
They were closed at night so keeper had to be<br />
woken. " Gardner Church's keeper was beaten up<br />
several times - all for .05~ or .lO~ which was <strong>the</strong><br />
toll.<br />

of tobacco. .. "help yourself, it's on <strong>the</strong> house".<br />
