Dear Members of the Hammond Community and our Guests:
Welcome to another wonderful season of athletic competition at Hammond! Whether you have
been a faithful member of our community for many years or are visiting our campus for the first time,
I hope you find your experience enjoyable. In keeping with our highly successful tradition, the 2010-
2011 school year promises to be another impressive year for our student-athletes. I am so proud and
thankful for our students, coaches, parents, volunteers, and maintenance staff, whose hard work and
dedication during the season as well as the preceding months help ensure the quality of experience
that we all appreciate.
The Hammond experience is defined by many opportunities for students to develop in mind,
body, and spirit. As a former coach and student-athlete, I can attest to the value of athletics in an
independent school setting. Competition helps foster a sense of shared loyalty by all constituents in
a school community – students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends. For the individual student,
I feel that athletics can be an integral component of the educational experience and development
of the well-rounded student. As we know, the potential lessons learned outside the classroom in
athletics complement our academic program and are extremely valuable. Being a member of a team
allows students to grow and develop their physical skills, but it also allows them the opportunity to
develop their character, leadership, and intellectual skills. The countless hours of sacrifice, dedication
to the team above the individual, and perseverance through adversity will certainly be beneficial to
our students in their lives both at Hammond and in the world beyond our gates.
Welcome from the Headmaster
Hammond is dedicated to preparing all of our students for college; therefore, our academic curriculum
is rigorous. Given this, as well as our strengths in the arts, I am always impressed that roughly 90% of
our student body manage to balance their time and represent our school by competing in an athletic
role during the course of the year.
Thank you for being here to support our students. Your presence and positive sportsmanship help
contribute to the spirit that defines Hammond. I am honored to be a member of the Hammond
Community, and I wish all of the Skyhawks the best of luck this year.
Go Skyhawks!
Hammond Seeks Fifth Straight
SCISA State Football Championship
The Hammond Skyhawk football team is looking to make history this year!
Having won four consecutive football state championships (2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009),
the Skyhawks, led by Coach Erik Kimrey, are looking to win an unprecedented fifth
consecutive state title. No team in South Carolina history has ever reached this goal, and
we offer all of our support to the Skyhawks this year in solidifying their names in the
history books.
The 2010 Skyhawk team boasts many strong returners, as well as a good crop of younger
players. They have been hard at work all summer, ensuring that they are in peak physical
condition, not willing to leave anything to chance in the upcoming season.
The Administration and
Skyhawk Club appreciate
your support of Hammond
Athletics. We hope you will
be able to join us each and
every Friday night for the
next thirteen weeks as our
football team pursues its
fifth consecutive football
championship.
Dear Fellow Skyhawks and Hammond Visitors,
Welcome to the campus of Hammond School!
Whether you are an advertiser, a member of the Skyhawk Club, or a fan of Hammond athletics,
we truly appreciate your support.
It is with a spirit of gratefulness that we approach the fall season. We are indebted to the Skyhawk
Club for their hard work and diligence in improving our athletic facilities over the past several
years: visiting bleachers in Edens stadium, new scoreboards, countless upgraded uniforms, and
equipment too numerous to mention. Their hard work on this athletic program, on running our
concessions, and on overseeing Skyhawk Club memberships are an invaluable help to Hammond
Athletics. We would also like to particularly thank outgoing Skyhawk Club president, Mark Hood,
who has led the Club’s efforts for the past two years, and we would like to welcome our new
president, Lee Harvin.
Welcome from the Athletic Director
We are also grateful to Chris Angel and the entire administration for their avid support of our
teams, both on and off the field. The collaboration at Hammond between administrators, coaches,
faculty members, and student-athletes is truly remarkable.
With three state championships, as well as multiple region titles, under our belt from last year, we
look forward to 2010. Hammond’s teams are perennial favorites at the region and state level, in
many of our sports. We trust that the commitment to excellence that Hammond demonstrates
in the academic realm translates as well into the athletic arena. Most of our teams begin to train
for their season long before the season begins, and this year was no different. Summer workouts
are becoming the norm for Hammond teams, and our student-athletes are learning first-hand the
correlation between hard work and success.
Additionally, you will hear the phrase “Winning Forever” often this year. As our athletic mission,
Winning Forever sums up our commitment to teaching life-lessons that transcend the particular
sport in which our student-athletes are involved. We want to win. And we want to win the right
way. We strive to instill character in every season, in every sport, in every contest and in every
practice. Our coaches are committed to reaching this end. So stand together with us this year
and celebrate. Cheer when we win. But cheer also when we lose. For if we are truly living out our
mission, even when we lose, we will be winning....forever.
Director of Athletics
The Hammond Skyhawk Club is an organization, as stipulated by our bylaws,
charged “to operate completely under the auspices of Hammond School for the
purpose of supporting and assisting the athletics department and the physical
education program of Hammond School.” Simply stated, the purpose of the
Skyhawk Club is to raise funds for Hammond Athletics.
Though the primary goal of the Skyhawk Club is to support Hammond
Athletics, the next logical questions might be…“Why?” On the surface that
might seem to be a very easy question to answer. About 90% of our student
body play at least one sport. For the upcoming year, Hammond will support
44 athletic teams consisting of approximately 375 student-athletes and 75
coaches. The logistics and expenses to maintain such a large participation
continue to increase. Needless to say, without your continued generosity we
would not be able to fund all these teams.
However, addressing the operating budget requirements is not the only goal, though it is vitally important.
The real reason that we give of our time and resources is to provide the best experience for our children while
attending Hammond School. Our hope is that all of our student-athletes have the opportunity to excel in and
out of the classroom, while enhancing their “Hammond Experience.” Extracurricular activities, such as athletics,
are essential in providing the very best education for all of our students, which is why Hammond School offers
them various athletic options from which to choose.
The Skyhawk Club raises money in 4 major areas: membership, ads/programs, concessions and tickets. The
program that you are reading is a result of much hard work, as evidenced by its outstanding quality and
professionalism. I would like to especially thank all those who have paid for advertisements in this year’s
program and ask that you support these advertisers when you can.
On behalf of Hammond School, I would also to extend a warm reception to all of our visitors, and encourage
you to support your teams with great enthusiasm. In doing so, may we all display great sportsmanship.
Thank you for your continued support of the Skyhawk Club and Hammond Athletics!
How do you spot the player who does whatever it takes?
Just look for the grass stains, the cuts, and the bruises. It’s the competitor who keeps fighting no matter what the scoreboard says.
And it’s the player who spends more time diving to the turf than standing on his feet.
It’s the first person to show up for practice and the last person to leave.
And it’s the winner who cries more than the defeated. It’s the kind of passion we bring to our customers each day.
And it’s why we proudly support the athletes who add so much excitement to our lives.
We’re Carolina First. And we do whatever it takes to help people succeed.
“Staff Spotlight”
Varsity Football Coach
Erik Kimrey
He’s not your typical football
coach. With a medium build
and unassuming personality,
you might just miss Erik
Kimrey if you walk by him on
campus. In his spare time,
he likes to play chess and
study philosophy. He was a
math major in college. He can
often be heard discussing the
teleological argument for the
origin of the universe. On the
Coach Erik Kimrey surface, you might think that
he seems like quite an odd pick
for a football coach. Think again.
Erik’s Father, Bill Kimrey, who joins Erik’s staff this year, coached at Dutch
Fork High School for over 30 years. “My earliest memories,” Erik relates,
“are of my dad’s teams—being on the sidelines, watching all the older
players.” Learning under his father, later playing quarterback for Dutch
Fork, and eventually playing under Lou Holtz for the University of South
Carolina, Erik has learned from some of the best coaches around.
Few Columbia natives will forget that day back in 2000 when starting
quarterback Phil Petty sustained an ankle injury, and Erik took the field in
his place. It was fourth and 10 on the Mississippi State 25 yard line, and
Erik reportedly told Coach Holtz, “I can throw the fade, Coach!” Of course,
Erik’s game-winning throw catapulted him to instant fame among loyal
Gamecocks. Moments like these seem to have prepared Coach Kimrey to
do just the job he’s doing today. Perhaps these moments have something
to do with how he has amassed four straight state championship wins
in the last four years. Yet, asked what has enabled him to have this kind
of success, Erik is quick to point out that he is “surrounded by a talented
team of coaches, and a community that has enabled us to be successful.”
“I feel like we have taken a very realistic approach to coaching—we
realize that we are all flawed and imperfect, and we need to seek out
wisdom and strategies to improve. We understand the urgency of every
moment. Our goal is to be the best we can be—not necessarily to be
first. But typically, if we are the best we can be, we will be first.”
Erik will be teaching an upper school philosophy and religion class in the
spring, and also teaches Physical Education to Lower School students,
mainly Pre-K and first grade. When asked how teaching lower school PE
compares to football, he laughs, and says, “PE is probably harder!”
When asked what the most fulfilling part of his job is, Erik quickly
responds, “It’s watching young men mature and become equipped
with the tools to navigate through life. Football is a great teaching
tool, and you’re able to connect with kids in an arena that you
don’t find in other places. For me, it’s not about watching the great
player go off and play in college. I more enjoy watching the kid who
thought he would never be successful in athletics really surprise
himself by great performance, and the sense of confidence that he
develops through the process. I enjoy the relationship that I have
with a lot of the guys after graduation.”
“Ultimately, if you care about your players, they know it,” he adds.
“So if you crack down on them, they know it’s tough love. Life’s not a
perpetual pat on the back, and this is one of the lessons they learn.”
When asked how he feels about coaching as a career choice, he
shares, “I’ve come to realize that I was born to do this. My birthday
is on the first day of two-a-days. My first memories are of being
on the sidelines watching older players. My whole life has been an
internship for my job. The more I look at my life, the more I realize
that God has put me in the right situation—it’s not that I’ve done
anything special—I’ve just been in a position to learn a lot about
young people and about life. The only question that remains is ‘What
do I do with that?’”
We’re not sure exactly what he’s going to do with that, but we hope
he decides to lead Hammond to a fifth straight state championship.
Most coaches would be hard-pressed to do that.
But then again, he’s not your typical football coach.
