Okay, school has begun. Homework, pop-quizzes, and reports will come due. But life
isn’t over. Now, in addition to learning a few new things, you can look forward
screaming your vocal chords out at all the big games.
Besides, you still have the weekends.
And Corner Pantry is here to help. We’re right around the corner
with every party need: chips, ice, drinks, snacks, and more.
Heck, we even have notebook paper.
Everything you need, right around the Corner.

Dear Members of the Hammond Community and our Guests:
Welcome to another wonderful season of athletic competition at Hammond! Whether you have
been a faithful member of our community for many years or are visiting our campus for the first
time, I hope you find your experience enjoyable. In keeping with our highly successful tradition,
the 2009-2010 school year continues to be another impressive year for our student-athletes. I am
so proud and thankful for our students, coaches, parents, volunteers, and maintenance staff whose
hard work and dedication during the season as well as the preceding months help ensure the
quality of experience that we all appreciate.
Welcome from the Headmaster
The Hammond experience is defined by many opportunities for students to develop in mind,
body, and spirit. As a former coach and student-athlete, I can attest to the value of athletics in an
independent school setting. Competition helps foster a sense of shared loyalty by all constituents
in a school community – students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends. For the individual
student, I feel that athletics can be an integral component of the educational experience and
development of the well-rounded student. As we know, the potential lessons learned outside the
classroom in athletics complement our academic program and are extremely valuable. Being a
member of a team allows students to grow and develop their physical skills, but it also allows them
the opportunity to develop their character, leadership, and intellectual skills. The countless hours
of sacrifice, dedication to the team above the individual, and perseverance through adversity will
certainly be beneficial to our students in their lives both at Hammond and in the world beyond our
gates.
Hammond is dedicated to preparing all of our students for college; therefore, our academic
curriculum is rigorous. Given this, as well as our strengths in the arts, I am always impressed that
roughly 90% of our student body manage to balance their time and represent our school by
competing in an athletic role during the course of the year.
Thank you for being here to support our students. Your presence and positive sportsmanship help
contribute to the spirit that defines Hammond. I am honored to be a member of the Hammond
Community, and I wish all of the Skyhawks the best of luck this year.
Go Skyhawks!
Dear Fellow Skyhawks,
I always enjoy walking through the Hammond weight room. The constant influx of student-athletes,
many of whom come on their own, is quite exciting. Often, I see a core group of teammates,
months away from beginning their season, hard at work, preparing under the leadership of their
coaches and our strength and conditioning team. Without fully realizing it, they are learning
the value of hard work, preparation, discipline, and sacrifice. They later go on to excel in-season
because they have counted the cost in the pre-season.
Life-lessons like these are what make our work worthwhile. Seeing young lives transformed for the
better gives so much more value to the respective sports they have chosen. And seeing coaches
committed to this end makes us proud to be at Hammond.
As you thumb through the pages of this athletic program, we trust that it gives you a good
overview of what Hammond Athletics are all about. With an athletic season well underway, and
with multiple state and region championships already behind us, we continue to look to the future.
elcome from the Athletic Director
As we do, we want to thank you for your support of our Hammond Athletics. Whether you
purchased an ad in this year’s fantastic athletic program, joined the Skyhawk Club, or simply offer
heartfelt support to our athletes on the field, we truly do value your support. We would urge you to
continue to join us in emphasizing what matters most to our young athletes. While we strive to win
every contest in which we participate, we must not lose sight of the aforementioned life-lessons
that athletics can teach us.
That’s what our athletic mission, “Winning Forever,” is all about. We want our victories to not only
come via the scoreboard, but in personal and corporate growth for each of our athletes. This
ensures that our “victories” are victories in the truest sense of the word.
So stand together with us this year and celebrate. Cheer when we win. But cheer also when we
lose—the right way. For if we are truly living out our mission, even when we lose, we will be
winning....forever.
Gratefully,
Andy Edgren
Director of Athletics
At Hammond School, the word “team” is not only defined by our
exceptional athletes. We have an incredible team of families, friends,
faculty, staff, alumni, and an expanded community that reaches
beyond the playing field to lend their support and encouragement.
To extend a simple “thank you” for the value of these efforts is
clearly not enough.
Rather, I’d like to share a spirit of great appreciation and congratulations for this investment in the
heart of Hammond School—not only for our achievements on the field and in the classroom, but
for the success our students will pursue in life. As we devote our time, energy and resources to the
Skyhawk Club, we enrich not only the lives of everyone in the Hammond community, but we provide a
far-reaching benefit for communities to come.
But whether we win or lose on the fields, our most valuable trophy is our sportsmanship, having the
fortitude to support and encourage every contributor to do their very best. And the amazing thing
about life is . . . doing our best will usually get the job done.
It’s time to gear up for another outstanding season of Hammond Athletics! I challenge each of you this
year to be a spectator at a sporting event you’ve yet to visit. I look forward to seeing you in the stands!
“Staff Spotlight” Boys Soccer Coach
Adrian Pinasco
Walking into the lower school
gym, in the middle of a noisy
PE class, it would be very easy
to miss him.
Off in a corner sits an
unassuming coach with a quiet
demeanor, who almost seems
detached from his class. Yet
the longer you stay, you realize
something quite remarkable
Coach Adrian Pinasco is taking place. As he sits back
and quietly observes, upwards
of 30 4 th graders are playing two separate pickup baseball
games on two halves of the gym. There are no fights. No
arguments over who’s safe or out. No kids are running
wild. Certain students have been designated as umpires,
others as coaches, others as players. Amazingly, a class of
energetic, noisy 4 th graders is running itself beautifully. And
it’s not by accident.
In addition to teaching lower school physical education,
Coach Adrian Pinasco coaches the boys’ soccer team
at Hammond and exercises the same organizational
control over that program, ensuring that his athletes are
well-trained, disciplined, and play great soccer. Looking
at him, you wouldn’t know that he is currently working
on his fourth master’s degree. Or that in his Argentinian
hometown and through the nation, his family name is
quite legendary. Or that he is one of Hammond’s most
passionate coaches, often choking up in the huddle after
an emotional win.
A native of Argentina, Coach Pinasco’s story is not exactly
one of humble beginnings. His father, Carlos, was a famous
professional soccer player. Adrian relates “growing up on a
soccer field and living on the sidelines” as a boy. His father’s
fame and success allowed him to travel and live in Ecuador,
Guatemala, and Colombia, South America. As a young man,
Adrian played for the world-renowned Boca Juniors Soccer
Club, a club that has produced the likes of Maradona,
Batistuta, Veron, and many other soccer greats.
“At 18 years of age,” Adrian recalled, “my father told me
I was going to get an education, and he put me out of
soccer. So while I continued to play and coach soccer, I
3.75 x 2.5
got my PE degree, got a master’s degree, then another
master’s. But I was still living in the shadow of my dad.
Whatever I was doing, any job I had—it was because of my
dad. Basically the country got too little for me. So I got on
a plane one day, not speaking one word of English, and
came to the U.S.”
“At USC, I started learning English, studying six-to-eight
hours a day. Eventually, I met some of the USC soccer
coaches. When we tried to communicate, they told me,
‘Adrian, go learn some English and come back!’ They
couldn’t understand a single word I was saying.”
Eventually, as his English improved, USC Soccer Coach
Mark Berson realized he needed Adrian’s soccer expertise,
and he hired him as one of his trusted assistant coaches.
Adrian later went on to coach at Appalachian State, later
moving on to another SCISA school, Beaufort Academy,
where he led the team to two state championships and
two state runner-up titles - in four years.
When Adrian came back to Columbia in 2004, he actually
turned down the opportunity to return to coach at USC,
choosing Hammond instead. When asked why, Adrian
responded, “Well, I was married now, and I was starting to
think like a family man instead of a single guy. My wife was
pregnant, and in the future, what place could be better
than Hammond to raise a kid? It was like my family dreams
took over my individual dreams.”
Adrian now appears perfectly at home in Columbia, living
with his wife Jennifer and children, Briana and Matthew.
He makes the transition look quite easy as he moves from
a noisy PE class full of excited young lower school students
to a driven group of young men vying for a state title. In
both cases, his passion for kids, his mind for sports, and his
love for the game of soccer all come through.
“I love being active, and I love teaching PE…I just love it.
The kids enjoy playing games, but in the process we get to
teach them the right way to exercise; it’s about more than
just getting the kids to release some energy. I talk to the
kids like they’re my little friends, and we see improvement
every year when we test them twice a year.
And,” he laughs, “I hope that they all turn into little soccer
players one day.”
GO HAMMOND SKYHAWKS!
71
How do you spot the player who does whatever it takes?
Just look for the grass stains, the cuts, and the bruises. It’s the competitor who keeps fighting no matter what the scoreboard says.
And it’s the player who spends more time diving to the turf than standing on his feet.
It’s the first person to show up for practice and the last person to leave.
And it’s the winner who cries more than the defeated. It’s the kind of passion we bring to our customers each day.
And it’s why we proudly support the athletes who add so much excitement to our lives.
We’re Carolina First. And we do whatever it takes to help people succeed.
