A Community of Care
2004 marked the 150th anniversary of Hartford Hospital’s founding. For the
people of Hartford Hospital, it was a year of both celebration and reflection.
We celebrated the hospital’s many achievements, its growth into one of
the world’s premier health care institutions, and its fidelity to the spirit
of community service that motivated its founders.
At the same time, we paused to reflect on our history. As we did, we
explored a fascinating story that included astonishing advances in medicine,
continual innovation in technology, and countless improvements to buildings
and grounds.
But at the heart of this 150-year saga were the people of Hartford
Hospital. They were doctors, nurses and administrators. They were benefactors,
board members, employees and volunteers. Hartford Hospital is what
it is today because they devoted their talents, knowledge, passion and skills
to a single goal: providing the finest care to every patient who entered our
doors, and, indeed, to the community beyond our walls.
Now, as we look to the future of Hartford Hospital, we recognize that
the people who will write the next chapter in its history—the people who
will take it into its next century—are among us today. While the names and
faces of only a few of them appear in these pages, each and every one is an
essential part of the diverse community of care that is Hartford Hospital.
