<strong>The</strong> <strong>Three</strong>-<strong>B<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>System</strong><br />

Avoid<strong>in</strong>g contam<strong>in</strong>ation,<br />

reduc<strong>in</strong>g landfill and embrac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> waste challenge

Waste Management tips and Simple Rules<br />

Hast<strong>in</strong>gs residents are required to separate waste<br />

<strong>in</strong>to three different streams.<br />

Contam<strong>in</strong>ation causes health and landfill problems<br />

and costs our community. <strong>The</strong>re are a number<br />

of simple rules, which will ensure <strong>the</strong> successful<br />

collection of your b<strong>in</strong>;<br />

• Only place acceptable materials <strong>in</strong> each of <strong>the</strong><br />

three b<strong>in</strong>s<br />

• <strong>B<strong>in</strong></strong>s must not weigh more than 55kg<br />

• <strong>B<strong>in</strong></strong>s must have <strong>the</strong> lids completely closed<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y are out for collection<br />

• <strong>B<strong>in</strong></strong>s must be at <strong>the</strong> kerbside by 6am on <strong>the</strong><br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g of scheduled collection day<br />

• <strong>B<strong>in</strong></strong>s must be placed on <strong>the</strong> kerbside fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> road and be spaced 80cm apart<br />

• Avoid plac<strong>in</strong>g b<strong>in</strong>s near trees or parked cars<br />

• Goods such as books, cloth<strong>in</strong>g, furniture<br />

appliances and build<strong>in</strong>g materials should be<br />

separated and taken for reuse to opportunity<br />

shops, secondhand dealers and build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

material recyclers<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r Waste Services<br />

Kerbside ‘Junk’ Collection: All residents with a<br />

domestic waste collection service are entitled to<br />

one general waste ‘junk collection’ each calendar<br />

bedd<strong>in</strong>g, small white goods or any s<strong>in</strong>gle item<br />

capable of be<strong>in</strong>g easily lifted by two people. To book<br />

11am – 1pm at Ellenborough Reserve.<br />

Hazardous materials: Materials, such as used<br />

batteries, oil, chemicals and fluorescent bulbs<br />

should not be placed <strong>in</strong> domestic b<strong>in</strong>s because<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are dangerous to residents, waste collectors<br />

and landfill staff. Residents can drop off hazardous<br />

materials for FREE at <strong>Council</strong>’s K<strong>in</strong>gfisher Road<br />

waste facility.<br />

Household Kitchen Tidy: <strong>Council</strong> provides a free<br />

Recycl<strong>in</strong>g Jackpot: A <strong>Council</strong> created <strong>in</strong>centive<br />

scheme to reward residents that ‘do <strong>the</strong> right<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g’ when <strong>the</strong>y recycle. Each yellow b<strong>in</strong> is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g with an address randomly selected and its<br />

yellow b<strong>in</strong> contents checked when it is collected.<br />

If <strong>the</strong> yellow b<strong>in</strong> has no contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong><br />

resident w<strong>in</strong>s $100. If contam<strong>in</strong>ants are found <strong>the</strong><br />

prize will jackpot to <strong>the</strong> next week.<br />

Midwaste: A forum made up of eight member<br />

<strong>Council</strong>’s located on <strong>the</strong> mid north coast of NSW.<br />
