Hutt Valley Biographical Index and Genealogies website www.hbig.gen.nz Star 10 Apr 1886 The monthly meeting of the Canterbury Band of Hope Union was held at Mr Parkes’ house, Barbadoes street, on Thursday, when the details belonging to the demonstration for Easter Monday were discussed. The Sports Committee had met and reported progress. It was reported that probably four bands would be in attendance. It was resolved that hymns be sung at Latimer square before starting, and at the Park upon arrival. Several eminent temperance speakers were to be asked to give short addresses. The meeting then adjourned till Tuesday, April 20. (1897) William Henry Parkes, M.B., C.M., Edin., Physician and Surgeon, 102 Cuba Street, Wellington. Dr. Parkes was born at Derby, England. He came to the Colony with his parents in 1874 per ship "Hereford," arriving in Lyttleton. He was educated at Christchurch, and attended at the East Christchurch and Normal schools, subsequently studying at the Canterbury College. Dr. Parkes commenced his medical education at the Otago University, where he remained for two years. He then went Home to Scotland, arriving there in 1890, and in 1892 he graduated at the university of that most beautiful of cities, Edinburgh. After taking his degree, Dr. Parkes practised his profession in Enland, and for two years resided in Sheffield. At the end of that time, 1894, he returned to the colonies, to act as locum tenens to Dr. Mackin in Wellington during that gentleman's abscence from New Zealand. Dr. Parkes is surgeon to the Union Steamship Company, and also to the Oddfellows, Foresters, Druids, Hibernians, Rechabites, and other societies. Star 13 Jan 1897 Death Jan 12, at his father’s residence, 114 Barbadoes Street, George Albert, the dearly loved son of William and Elizabeth Parkes; aged twentyone. So loved, so mourned. Star 22 Sep 1897 Local Industry Last evening, at the invitation of Mr W. Parkes, the President and the Committee of the Canterbury Industrial Association visited his house in Barbadoes Street, to inspect a pipe organ which he has just constructed. Mr Davis Hunt gave a short recital, which served to show what an excellent tone the instrument possessed, and the scope of it was greatly admired. Before leaving, Mr J. R. Triggs, President of the Industrial Association, congratulated Mr Parkes on the successful completion of his work, which, he thought, was one of the most wonderful pieces of mechanism ever put together by an amateur. Mr Parkes, who is sixty-nine years of age, has previously constructed other musical instruments, and decidedly has mechanical talent; but this is, undoubtedly, his greatest achievement. He started to build the organ four years ago, without plans or drawings of any kind, and, with very little outside help, he has constructed an instrument which would have been a credit to a professional organ-builder. Out of the 366 pipes composing the organ, only the 56 oboe pipes have been imported; the remainder have all been made here, the wooden ones from kauri and the metal ones from zinc, which is a new departure. The organ has seven complete stops, with the addition of the pedal organ, and Mr Parkes has arranged also to fit in a set of bells. So as to allow of the instrument going into an ordinary room, Mr Parkes has arranged the large open diapason pipes, which usually are placed above the keyboard, so that they spring from about a foot above the floor, the air being led to them by pipes from above. The bellows have been constructed on an entirely new principle and work with very little power. The front is a handsome one and is ornamented with local carvings. The name plates on the stops have been constructed from sheep’s knuckle-bones, with the titles worked in Indian ink, and they can hardly be distinguished from ivory.
