Auckl<strong>and</strong> Star 19 Sep 1933 Dr Parkes Dead – Notable Career – Services in Wartime – Director in London<br />
The death occurred suddenly this morning of Dr W. H. Parkes, C.M.G., C.B.E., a prominent Auckl<strong>and</strong> medical practitioner with a<br />
distinguished war record. Dr Parkes was perhaps best known for his services with the New Zeal<strong>and</strong> Expeditionary Force. He left with the<br />
Main Body, <strong>and</strong> he was in charge of the New Zeal<strong>and</strong> General Hospital in Egypt in 1915, <strong>and</strong> from 1916-18 was director of N.Z.E.F.<br />
medical services in London. He was mentioned in dispatches, made a colonel, <strong>and</strong> decorated with a C.M.G. Prior to the war he was<br />
actively associated in Auckl<strong>and</strong> with the volunteer movement. Dr Parkes, who was 69 years of age, was a son of the late Mr William<br />
Parkes, of Christchurch, <strong>and</strong> was born at Derby, Engl<strong>and</strong>. He came to New Zeal<strong>and</strong> when eleven years of age with his parents. He<br />
commenced medical studies at Otago University, <strong>and</strong> then went to Edinburgh University, where he took the M.B. <strong>and</strong> C.M. degrees in<br />
1892. Returning to Auckl<strong>and</strong>, he went into private practice. He was honorary surgeon <strong>and</strong> physician at the Auckl<strong>and</strong> Hospital for some time,<br />
<strong>and</strong> was the chief medical adviser for the Auckl<strong>and</strong> Plunket Society from its inception. In over 30 years’ practice in Auckl<strong>and</strong> he became<br />
very widely known <strong>and</strong> respected. Dr Parkes is survived by his widow, who is widely known in connection with women’s activities <strong>and</strong> social<br />
work, particularly the Plunket Society, in Auckl<strong>and</strong>, a daughter, Mrs McClatchie, of Auckl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> two sons, Mr Ian Parkes of Taihape, <strong>and</strong><br />
Dr Athol Parkes of Worcester, Engl<strong>and</strong>. Mr J. J. Parkes of Auckl<strong>and</strong> is a brother <strong>and</strong> Mrs Penn Cliff of Geraldine, a sister. There are three<br />
gr<strong>and</strong>daughters. The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon.<br />
