1.1.1. New Research Programs
PRINOS: Underwater Geological and Environmental Studies in the region of western basin
of Prinos, Kavala (ΠΡΙΝΟΣ/764). *
Scientific Coordinator: Dr E. Papathanassiou/ Dr G. Roussakis
Funding:
Aegean Energy SA.
Duration: 4 months (01/03/09-30/06/09)
Total Budget: 255.850 €
Study Area:
Western basin of Prinos, Kavala.
Scientific team (ΗCMR): Dr E. Papathanassiou, Dr G. Roussakis, Dr A. Tsangari, Dr Ch.
Anagnostou, Dr V.A. Katsiki, Dr Ch. Kontoyannis, Dr E. Kaberi, Dr S. Zervoudaki, Dr Y.
Other Participants: Aarhus University.
Brief Description of the Program: The scope of the project is to search the sediment basins with
seismic reflection of high analysis in the frames of the Aegean Energy’s Drilling Program in the
region of western basin of Prinos in the open waters of Kavala.
In order to achieve the objectives the project will: (a) Analyse sub-surface sediments with multi
channel 2D system of seismic reflection of high precision bathymetric imprinting of seabed with
multi beam (in the open waters) and with eco sounder (in the shallow waters with depth smaller
than 30 meters). (b) Determine of characteristics surface and sub-surface sediments of seabed with
tomographer 3.5KHz. (c) Determine surface and sub-surface currents as well as changes of water
masses caused by changes of temperature and salinity, with use CTD and ADCP in selected places.
(d) Sample of surface sediments for the determination biological and chemical parameters.
Development and pre-operational validation of upgraded GMES Marine Core Services and
capabilities. (MyOcean/ 766).
Contract Number: FP7-SPA.2007.1.1.01
Scientific Coordinator: Dr G. Korres
Funding:
EU
Starting Year: 2009
Duration: 39 months (01/01/09-31/03/12)
Total Budget: 708.067 €
Study Area:
Mediterranean – European Seas –Global Ocean
Scientific team (ΗCMR): Dr G. Korres, Dr K. Nittis, L. Perivoliotis, Dr G. Petihakis, G. Krokos,
D. Kassis, P. Vavilis, Dr A. Papadopoulos, E. Papadopoulos
Brief Description of the Program: MyOcean is a three year project (2009-2012) which goal is
the development and pre-operational validation of the GMES Marine Core Service for ocean
monitoring and forecasting. It’s a transition project that will conduct the European “operational
oceanography” community towards the operational phase of a GMES European service, which
demands more European integration, more operationality, and more service.
MyOcean's objective is to set up (definition, design, development and validation) an integrated pan-
European capability for ocean monitoring and forecasting, using nationally-available skills and
resources.
