Last year was a time of change for Hanover County
Public Schools and the Hanover Education Foundation.
The retirement of our Superintendent, Dr. Stewart
Roberson, is a big loss for our school division as he has
done so many great things for Hanover County Public Schools
and the Hanover Education Foundation. Rising out of that
change, however, are great things. The appointment of Dr. Jamelle Wilson as our 12th
Superintendent promises great things in the future. Dr. Wilson has served the school
division in many capacities – from classroom teacher to Assistant Superintendent of
Instruction – over the years. She has been able to observe Dr. Roberson’s leadership so
that she can draw from his strengths, but she also will be able to add her exciting new
ideas. We are poised for great things in the future with Hanover County Public Schools.
There also has been change on the Board of the Hanover Education Foundation.
The terms of Fitz Rogers, Wayne Dishman, Pamela Wratchford, Jeff Robinson, and Ann
Smoot as members of the Board of Directors expired this year. They were all fantastic
contributors to our Board, but I am confident that the existing board members and our
new board members will step up to fill their shoes.
Last year, we had a great year for the Hanover Education Foundation, raising
over $322,000.00. In particular, Dr. Roberson allowed us to use his retirement as an
opportunity for a fundraiser for the Stewart D. Roberson Professional Development
Scholarship. Under the leadership of Sue Forbes Watson, Margaret Hill, and Anita Floyd,
we were able to raise $135,000.00 toward that fund. In addition, we were able to award
scholarships to 28 students totaling $51,000.00.
In this, my last year as President, I am thrilled to be supported by such a strong
Board and a great Executive Committee. We look forward to a great 2011 – 2012!
On December 14, 2010, Dr. Stewart
D. Roberson, Hanover’s eleventh
Superintendent of Schools, announced his
retirement from Hanover County Public
Schools. To honor the many accomplishments that
have been made under his direction, a scholarship
has been developed in his name. A scholarship
dinner to recognize Dr. Roberson and his 16
successful years of service was held on June 9, 2011,
at Randolph Macon College. Guests in attendance
included: Former Governor Gerald L. Baliles; Dr.
Billy K. Cannady, Jr., Dean of the School of Continuing
and Professional Studies at the University of Virginia;
Jeffrey R. Beard, Director General for the International
Baccalaureate program in Geneva, Switzerland,
The community was invited to participate in this
milestone by supporting the Stewart D. Roberson
Scholarship. This support will strengthen the
important investments provided by Hanover County
Public Schools’ excellent faculty, staff, and school
leaders, demonstrating further the great value Dr.
Roberson has placed on training and professional
development needs throughout his distinguished
career as an educator and leader. The donations
received through this scholarship fund will directly
impact thousands of children influenced by each
educator in Hanover. One hundred percent of all
proceeds will benefit those who teach, lead and care
for Hanover’s school children. The scholarship will be
managed by the Hanover Education Foundation.
Music was provided by The Remnants (George Sadler, Principal of Hanover High School is
Hanover Education Foundation Awards Superintendent’s
Professional Development Scholarship
The Hanover Education Foundation (HEF)
has awarded the 2010-2011 Superintendent’s
Professional Development Scholarship to Kimberly
Jameson-Dean, a Gifted and Talented Resource
teacher at Kersey Creek Elementary School.
Ms. Jameson-Dean used the $1,000 scholarship to
attend the National Association for Gifted Children’s
Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana where
she increased her knowledge base in areas such as
the social/emotional needs of gifted students and
how to best serve dual-identified students. Other
goals included gaining more ideas for ways to enrich
and accelerate in the core curriculum areas and obtaining more materials which will support student
learning. Ms. Jameson-Dean plans to work with Dr. Deborah Waters, principal of Kersey Creek
Elementary, to use a faculty meeting or professional development day to share what she learned from
the conference.
The Superintendent’s Professional Development Scholarship was initiated by the HEF in 1999
and is awarded annually to a classroom teacher whose potential of achieving greater things with and
for students in the classroom would be heightened if afforded a significant professional development
opportunity. Funds from this scholarship can support tuition, books, travel and other activities relating
to the professional development experience. The award was presented at the February 8, 2011,
meeting of the Hanover County School Board.
PGES Principal Rhonda
Gifts That Make a Difference for Hanover Students
Verizon Foundation Grant Supports Reading Olympics
Randy Dillard, Verizon Area Manager and grant coordinator,
awards the 2010-2011 Regional Reading Olympians trophy
to The Unicorns, Liberty Middle School’s winning team.
Many students on this team were “RO” participants for five
consecutive years.
The Verizon Foundation
continued their generous support of
the Reading Olympics and Reading
Olympians programs for 2010-
2011 with a $24,750 grant through
the Hanover Education Foundation.
Verizon has supported “RO” since
2003-2004 with grant contributions
now totaling $160,000. Funds
are used to purchase books and
medals for student participants in
grades four through eight.
Reading Olympics and Reading
Olympians work in teams to read
the year’s selected books and to
compete in question/answer events at their schools. Hanover County’s middle school
teams can advance to county and regional competitions with students from Goochland
and King William counties. Since the inception of Reading Olympics in 2001-2002, over
18,000 students have participated in these exciting programs that culminate with spirited
competitions!
Randy Dillard, Verizon Area Manager and local grant liaison, has been instrumental in
providing not only financial, but personal support of the Reading Olympics and Reading
Olympians programs by attending competitions and engaging with students to share
the importance of business and foundation support of public education. In his words,
“readers are leaders” and the reading comprehension and cooperative teamwork learned
through Reading Olympics and Reading Olympians are critical to lifelong success.
The 2010-2011 Reading Olympians champion team for Hanover
County was Yeah, We Read It from Chickahominy Middle School.
This team placed second at the Regional RO competition.
Building cooperative teamwork, sportsmanship, and fast friendships
are important opportunities provided by the Reading Olympics and
Reading Olympians programs.
