Generous Support From Our Community Hanover Education Foundation Hosts 8th Annual Bowl for Education First Place Winners from Hanover High School (L to R): Randy West, Bobby Stratton, George Sadler, Leslie Simmons Best Dressed First Place went to South Anna Elementary School for The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo (Cyndee Blount, Julie Colarusso, Brad Davis, Kathy MacLaughlin, Ray Heatwole) Best Dressed Runner-Up went to The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology for The Clampetts (Vince D’Agostino, Justin Roerink, Casey Owen, Zarnesha Aaron, Sandra Knuckles) Best Dressed Honorable Mention went to Kersey Creek Elementary School for the Smurfettes 1 & 2 (Donna Smith, Carrie Johnson, Melissa Lowder, Susan Walsh, Sandy Dacus, Lee Lythgoe, Esther McDermott, Shannon Tiller) On Saturday, January 22, 2011, forty-six teams representing every Hanover school, the Hanover County School Board, Hanover County Fire & EMS, several local businesses, the central office, and the Hanover Education Foundation (HEF) gathered at the AMF Hanover Lanes on Bell Creek Road to “Bowl for Education.” The HEF raised over $17,700 to support grants and scholarships for Hanover County students and teachers. The first place trophy went to the team from Hanover High School, The Hanover Hawks (Randy West, Bobby Stratton, George Sadler, Leslie Simmons). The second place trophy went to The Supply Room Companies, We Supply Strikes (Clyde Johnson, William Quarles, David Stearrett, Lamair Wilkerson). The third place trophy went to Atlee High School, Rolling Raiders (Jen Cohodas, Scott Csoke, Lowell Lantz, Erik Leise). Chip Tuck, from Rural Point Elementary School, received the trophy for highest score in a game for a male, and Jennifer Lenz from Washington Henry Elementary School received the trophy for highest score in a game for a female. This year’s costume theme for the tournament was Favorite TV/ Cartoon Family. Best Dressed Runner-Up went to The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology for The Clampetts (Vince D’Agostino, Justin Roerink, Casey Owen, Zarnesha Aaron, Sandra Knuckles), and Best Dressed First Place went to South Anna Elementary School for The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo (Cyndee Bount, Julie Colarusso, Brad Davis, Kathy MacLaughlin, Ray Heatwole). Best Dressed Honorable Mention went to Kersey Creek Elementary School for the Smurfettes 1 & 2 (Donna Smith, Carrie Johnson, Melissa Lowder, Susan Walsh, Sandy Dacus, Lee Lythgoe, Esther McDermott, Shannon Tiller). According to Margaret Hill, Executive Director of the HEF, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event. “Thanks to all of the business support we received this year; this was the best tournament we have had,” said Ms. Hill. “It’s always great to see folks having a good time at an event that benefits our students,” she said. 8 Striving for Excellence … in our students … in our schools … in our community.

Walmart Washington-Henry Elementary School Whole Foods Market Amy Williams YMCA of Greater Richmond Hanover Education Foundation Awards Superintendent’s Professional Development Scholarship The Hanover Education Foundation (HEF) has awarded the 2010-2011 Superintendent’s Professional Development Scholarship to Kimberly Jameson-Dean, a Gifted and Talented Resource teacher at Kersey Creek Elementary School. Ms. Jameson-Dean used the $1,000 scholarship to attend the National Association for Gifted Children’s Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana where she increased her knowledge base in areas such as the social/emotional needs of gifted students and how to best serve dual-identified students. Other goals included gaining more ideas for ways to enrich and accelerate in the core curriculum areas and obtaining more materials which will support student learning. Ms. Jameson-Dean plans to work with Dr. Deborah Waters, principal of Kersey Creek Elementary, to use a faculty meeting or professional development day to share what she learned from the conference. The Superintendent’s Professional Development Scholarship was initiated by the HEF in 1999 and is awarded annually to a classroom teacher whose potential of achieving greater things with and for students in the classroom would be heightened if afforded a significant professional development opportunity. Funds from this scholarship can support tuition, books, travel and other activities relating to the professional development experience. The award was presented at the February 8, 2011, meeting of the Hanover County School Board. PGES Principal Rhonda Epling Receives Award As Hanover’s runner-up for the 2011 R.E.B. Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership, Rhonda Epling, principal of Pole Green Elementary School, received a professional development scholarship from the Hanover Education Foundation in March 2011. This financial award will provide for a block of time for each grade level each day to tutor students in content areas for PGES’s Gator X remediation/enrichment program. www.hefhanover.com 9
