Scholarships and Grants<br />
Scholarships Awarded Through Hanover Education Foundation<br />
Scholarships totaling over $51,000 were awarded to 28 seniors in Hanover County Public Schools as they continue to pursue training and <strong>education</strong>al<br />
opportunities beyond high school..<br />
Al Gardner Horticulture Scholarship Fund – $1,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating<br />
senior from Patrick Henry High School with a stated intention of following a post-high school<br />
study of Horticulture, Biology, Environmental Science, Landscaping Design, or other related<br />
fields in the Natural Sciences.<br />
Beth O’Brien Hubbard Memorial Scholarship – $1,000 scholarships awarded to a<br />
graduating senior from all four high schools and The Georgetown School having a GPA of 3.0<br />
and enrolled in a four-year college majoring in the business field. The awardee should show<br />
positive work ethics and leadership skills.<br />
Bette J. Harmon Memorial Scholarship – $1,000 scholarship given in memory of Bette<br />
Harmon, a long time librarian in Hanover County Public Schools, to a graduating senior from<br />
Atlee High School and Lee-Davis High School with a desire in continuing a post-high school<br />
<strong>education</strong> in pursuance of a bachelor’s degree in either English or Education at a four-year<br />
college or university.<br />
Eleanor J. Sydnor Honor Award – $1,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior at<br />
Patrick Henry High School majoring in Education. This scholarship which was set up by the<br />
Class of 1942 is given in memory of Miss Sydnor who taught English and Math at Henry Clay<br />
High School for 26 years.<br />
Hanover Chapter of the AARP Scholarship – $250 scholarship awarded to a graduating<br />
Patrick Henry High School senior who wants to pursue a career in Education.<br />
J. K. Samples Scholarship – Mr. J. K. Samples served as the Superintendent of Hanover<br />
County Public Schools from 1965 -1980 and was committed to quality <strong>education</strong> for all<br />
students. It is in this spirit that the J.K. Samples Scholarship Fund was established. The J.K.<br />
Samples Scholarship, funded through the estate of Mr. Samples and his wife, is to be awarded<br />
to graduates of Hanover County Public Schools to assist with their post-high school <strong>education</strong>.<br />
Scholarships up to $3,000 are given to three students from all four high schools.<br />
Kevin Ritz Memorial Scholarship – $1,200 scholarship is given in memory of Kevin<br />
Ritz, a 1988 graduate of Lee- Davis High School and University of Virginia. This scholarship<br />
is awarded to a graduating senior at Lee-Davis High School that is interested in pursing an<br />
<strong>education</strong> degree.<br />
Mario Colon Rivadeneira Memorial Scholarship – This $1,000 scholarship established<br />
by Mario’s family will preserve and honor his memory by supporting a Lee-Davis High School<br />
graduate who aspires to make a significant contribution to the musical world.<br />
Reba G. Martin Memorial Scholarship – This $500 scholarship is given by the Martin<br />
Family in memory of Reba G. Martin. Mrs. Martin was a 3rd grade teacher at Cold Harbor<br />
Elementary School from 1992 to 1998. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who<br />
attended Cold Harbor Elementary School<br />
Shane T. Adcock Memorial Scholarship – $800 scholarship given to a graduating senior<br />
from Atlee High School or Hanover High School with a desire to continue their post-high<br />
school <strong>education</strong> including, but not limited to, apprenticeships, technical colleges and schools,<br />
community colleges, military colleges and universities. This scholarship is given in memory of<br />
Shane T. Adcock, a graduate of Atlee High School killed while serving his country in the Iraq<br />
War.<br />
