Through this focusing, the different CERES skills are taken advantage of in a more targeted way. It is also an approach that has its origins in the needs of the applications, which is pleasing to the industrial partners of CERES, enabling them to significantly continue to contribute to research. Practical conditions, requirements and restrictions create interesting strategic research questions that lead to industry relevant research. The two-year CERES+ funding started in January 2012. New collaborative projects have started together with the most important industrial partners. In each project there is also cooperation with foreign, leading international players from both academia and industry. To further sharpen the profile CERES has also developed specific cooperative projects and exchanges with selected academic research centres in the U.S., Europe and South America. To increase the visibility of CERES and spread the word about our special expertise and interest to both academia and industry, recurring seminars on intelligent cooperating embedded systems have been held with invited speakers of very high quality. The seminars, known by the name Halmstad Colloquium, are recorded and made publicly available on the internet. Overall, this should lead to Halmstad University not only consolidating its position as belonging to the country’s leaders in embedded systems, but is also becoming known and sought after as a partner at global level in the chosen research edge. The phase of national recognition, when the centre became well-known nationally and attracted increasing industry cooperation, can be seen as the period 2007 – 2010. The phase of effects on society is when direct and indirect effects of CERES research and innovation activities can be seen in industry and society. These effects are mainly achieved through the innovation support activities of CERES. Results in terms of, e.g., new companies and innovation centres can be seen from 2009 and onwards. The phase of international excellence, finally, is when the centre is attractive in national and international excellence networks and joint projects. Initial signs of this phase appeared during 2011 and continued during 2012. The efforts in the CERES+ programme, funded by The Knowledge Foundation during 2012-2013, are aimed at strengthening this position during these years and beyond. Phases of Development The development of CERES over a 10 – 15 years period towards its vision of international excellence and positive effects on industry and society can be described in terms of four phases: The build-up phase was when the orientation was defined, the first partnerships were established, the necessary first recruitments were done and the co-production projects with industry all got started. This phase started when CERES was first initiated in 2001; it continued through the platform years 2003 − 2004 and the first couple of years (2005 – 2007) of the profile period. Cooperation with Industry A group of eight Swedish companies were contracted partners when CERES was started as a profile. Over the years, these partners have participated in research projects, often with several companies in each project. With some of the companies a long-term, stabile strategic relationship has developed, resulting in joint strategic recruitments, joint efforts in European research initiatives, etc. Others have a somewhat less active role, while yet other companies have joined CERES as partners in specific projects. At the same time the cooperation with academic partners, in Sweden and abroad, has developed, sometimes into long-term strategic alliances. The number of industrial and academic partners of different kinds is shown in Figure 2. It shows a steady increase of both industrial and academic collaboration over the years. From 2010 there is a significant increase in industrial partnership, due to involvement in a large EU project. 60 50 SAAB SAAB has an established relationship to Halmstad University dating back to the early 1990-s, and over the years the cooperation has broadened and deepened. SAAB has benefited from it not only from the knowledge gained, but also through recruitment based on the fact that a large number of PhD students have worked in joint projects. SAAB’s main aim with the continued collaboration in the network management area is to create an integrated project team in which company representatives work together with academia to address key network management challenges, rather than establishing separate work packages for the industry. Our intention is therefore to contribute to the research activity through a partnership complementing and benefitting from academic excellence. This is how these partners motivate their continued participation in the CERES research programme: Free2move Free2move has earlier had an industrial PhD student within CERES, who has now graduated and works in the company. Signal processing and architectures for low power signal processing is a core competence for the company. In order to be able to develop products pushing state-of-the-art, we need to be involved in research in these fields. The company is developing communication products for the outdoor market with novel functionality. There is an increasing demand for high audio quality and long battery lifetime for these devices. One of the most prioritized issues is to find and learn how to use architectures for our processing needs that, through massive parallelism at low clock rates, are much more energy efficient than the more traditional approaches used today. http://www.free2move.se Volvo Group Advanced Technology & Research Over the past six years, Volvo Group Advanced Technology & Research has participated in the CERES program, through which we have gained in-depth knowledge of cooperating embedded systems and wireless real-time communication. The cooperation with Halmstad University, combined with our participation in European research projects such as CVIS, Safespot and PRE_DRIVE C2X, has given Volvo a knowledge platform on which to build future cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems and services, for more efficient, safer and more environmentally friendly transport.
