The Index of Global Philanthropy
The core product of Hudson’s Center
for Global Prosperity, under the direction
of Senior Fellow Carol Adelman,
is the annual Index of Global Philan -
thropy, which details the sources and
magnitude of private giving to the
developing world. The Index reframes
the discussion about the roles of the
public and private sectors in foreign
aid by showing that the full scale of a
country’s generosity includes assistance
from the private sector. The
Index demonstrates that the most
effective philanthropic bridge between
industrialized countries and developing
nations is built on private philanthropy,
volunteerism, and public-private
partnerships, not exclusively on
foreign aid.
The 2007 Index, released in May,
is the first to compare all developed
countries’ aid—government as well as
private—to the developing world. This
more accurate measure of countries’
gen erosity keeps the U.S. at the top of
all donor nations in absolute amounts
and places it in the top third as a percentage
of gross national income (GNI).
The new Index reveals that U.S. private
giving in 2005 (the latest available
data), in the form of money, volunteer
time, goods, and expertise to the developing
world, was at least $95 billion.
That is three and a half times the
amount of U.S. government foreign aid.
The 2007 Index received media coverage
from C-SPAN, the Wall Street
Journal, the Financial Times, the New
York Sun, the Nation al Post (Canada),
the Chronicle of Philanth ropy, and
many other news outlets. For more in -
