Chemical and Mechanical<br />

Engineering are awarded by<br />

Chevron Upstream Europe<br />

through Chevron’s <strong>University</strong><br />

Partnership Program.<br />

Chevron and <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> have a relationship<br />

stretching back over 30 years<br />

covering recruitment, research<br />

and knowledge transfer.<br />

Overview<br />

The <strong>University</strong> Partnership<br />

Program, or UPP, is a global<br />

program developed in<br />

conjunction with a select<br />

group of leading<br />

universities around the<br />

world to establish new<br />

programs, support faculty<br />

and provide student<br />

scholarships.<br />

The collaboration extends<br />

to research and technology.<br />

Universities are selected<br />

based on their excellent<br />

reputation, forward thinking<br />

and result-oriented<br />

education development.<br />

Chevron Upstream Europe<br />

Chevron is one of the world's largest integrated<br />

energy companies. Headquartered in San Ramon,<br />

California, Chevron is engaged in every aspect of<br />

the crude oil and natural gas industry, including<br />

exploration and production, manufacturing,<br />

marketing and transportation, chemicals<br />

manufacturing and sales, geothermal energy, and<br />

power generation. Chevron also invests in<br />

renewables and advanced technologies.<br />

Chevron Upstream Europe (CUE), based in<br />

Aberdeen, is part of the Chevron Europe, Eurasia<br />

and Middle East Exploration and Production<br />

Operating Company, one of f<strong>our</strong> operating<br />

companies that comprise Global Upstream & Gas.<br />

CUE has an integrated portfolio of upstream<br />

assets, ranging from exploration through<br />

development to production and decommissioning.<br />

It has assets and exploration acreage in the UK,<br />

Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Greenland,<br />

Poland, Romania and Bulgaria.<br />

The business unit employs approximately 1,000<br />

staff and long-term contractors at its onshore<br />

locations in the UK, Norway, Denmark, the<br />

Netherlands, Poland, Romania and offshore in the<br />

UK North Sea.<br />

Scholarship Terms & Conditions<br />

Value and Continuation<br />

• Up to six Chevron Scholarships will be<br />

awarded in 2013.<br />

• The allocation between Chemical and<br />

Mechanical Engineering will be determined<br />

by the <strong>University</strong> and Chevron based on<br />

number and quality of applications received.<br />

• The Chevron Scholarship is valued at up to<br />

£6,000.<br />

• Recipients of a scholarship will receive<br />

£1,000 in year 3, £2,000 in year 4 and<br />

£3,000 in year 5 of their chosen MEng degree<br />

programme with the funds being paid in two<br />

instalments each academic year, for example<br />

in year 4, £1,000 at the start of Semester 1<br />

and £1,000 at the start of Semester 2.<br />

• Award of the Scholarship in future years is<br />

contingent upon satisfactory performance<br />

and achievement of an average 60% mark<br />

in the previous year’s modules.<br />

Eligibility<br />

• All applicants must:<br />

• not be in receipt of a scholarship from an organisation other than<br />

Chevron or <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong>;<br />

• currently be a matriculated year 2 student in either Chemical or<br />

Mechanical Engineering at <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong>; and<br />

• be planning to study an MEng degree programme in either<br />

Chemical or Mechanical Engineering on entry to year 4.<br />

Withdrawal<br />

• The <strong>University</strong>, following discussion with Chevron, reserves the<br />

right to suspend the Scholarship if the Scholar:<br />

• takes a year out to complete a Diploma of Industrial Training (DIT);<br />

or<br />

• leaves the <strong>University</strong> for health or personal reasons.<br />

• The Scholarship shall recommence once the Scholar returns to full<br />

time study at <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> and on the c<strong>our</strong>se for which the<br />

Scholarship was originally awarded, subject to approval by the<br />

Head of Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Teaching<br />

Discipline as appropriate.<br />

• The Scholarship will be withdrawn if the Scholar:<br />

• leaves the <strong>University</strong> for any other reason than as stated above; or<br />

• accepts a scholarship from an organisation other than Chevron or<br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong>; or<br />

• changes degree programme to a subject other than Chemical or<br />

Mechanical Engineering.<br />

• The Scholarship will also be withdrawn if the Scholar fails to achieve<br />

a minimum average mark of 60% in either year 3 or year 4.<br />

However, the Head of Chemical Engineering or Mechanical<br />

Engineering Teaching Discipline, as appropriate, may appeal to<br />

Chevron should there be reasonable mitigating circumstances. Any<br />

waiver of the minimum average mark requirement shall be at<br />

Chevron’s discretion and cannot be appealed.<br />

Change to BEng Programme<br />

• If Scholar wishes to pursue a BEng<br />

degree in year 4 rather than complete<br />

the MEng degree, the Scholar will not be<br />

eligible for the full funding available<br />

under the Scholarship.<br />

• Funds for year 4 will be reduced to<br />

£1,000.<br />

• Funds for year 5 will be withdrawn.<br />

• If the Scholar wishes to pursue this<br />

c<strong>our</strong>se of study, then they should advise<br />

the Development & Alumni Office in<br />

writing prior to the commencement of<br />

Semester 2 in year 4.<br />

Internships/Employment<br />

• Chevron will advise Scholars of<br />

vacation placements, internships,<br />

projects and post graduation<br />

employment opportunities with<br />

Chevron Upstream Europe.<br />

• Available opportunities will be<br />

subject to competitive entry and<br />

therefore award of a Scholarship<br />

does not guarantee a position.<br />

Application Process<br />

• Applicants will be required to:<br />

• Complete the scholarship application form;<br />

• Submit a short CV;<br />

• Submit an essay covering the topics described in the application form;<br />

and<br />

• Request a statement of support from a member of <strong>University</strong> staff;.<br />

• The closing date for applications is Friday 5 July 2013.<br />

• The <strong>University</strong> and Chevron reserve the right to ask any applicant to<br />

attend an interview with Chevron staff at either Chevron’s offices in<br />

Aberdeen, at <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong>, or by telephone, if not residing<br />

or working within reasonable travelling distance of Aberdeen or<br />

Edinburgh. Interviews will be held during weeks commencing 12 and<br />

19 August 2013. Further details will be sent to selected applicants.<br />

• The awards will be announced prior to the start of Semester 1 in<br />

September 2013.<br />
