University have a relationship 

stretching back over 30 years 

covering recruitment, research 

and knowledge transfer.

Overview 

The University Partnership 

Program, or UPP, is a global 

program developed in 

conjunction with a select 

group of leading 

universities around the 

world to establish new 

programs, support faculty 

and provide student 

scholarships. 

The collaboration extends 

to research and technology. 

Universities are selected 

based on their excellent 

reputation, forward thinking 

and result-oriented 

education development. 



Chevron Upstream Europe 

Chevron is one of the world's largest integrated 

energy companies. Headquartered in San Ramon, 

California, Chevron is engaged in every aspect of 

the crude oil and natural gas industry, including 

exploration and production, manufacturing, 

marketing and transportation, chemicals 

manufacturing and sales, geothermal energy, and 

power generation. Chevron also invests in 

renewables and advanced technologies. 

Chevron Upstream Europe (CUE), based in 

Aberdeen, is part of the Chevron Europe, Eurasia 

and Middle East Exploration and Production 

Operating Company, one of four operating 

companies that comprise Global Upstream & Gas. 

CUE has an integrated portfolio of upstream 

assets, ranging from exploration through 

development to production and decommissioning. 

It has assets and exploration acreage in the UK, 

Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Greenland, 

Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. 

The business unit employs approximately 1,000 

staff and long-term contractors at its onshore 

locations in the UK, Norway, Denmark, the 

Netherlands, Poland, Romania and offshore in the 

UK North Sea.

Scholarship Terms & Conditions 

Value and Continuation 

• Up to six Chevron Scholarships will be 

awarded in 2013. 

• The allocation between Chemical and 

Mechanical Engineering will be determined 

by the University and Chevron based on 

number and quality of applications received. 

• The Chevron Scholarship is valued at up to 

£6,000. 

• Recipients of a scholarship will receive 

£1,000 in year 3, £2,000 in year 4 and 

£3,000 in year 5 of their chosen MEng degree 

programme with the funds being paid in two 

instalments each academic year, for example 

in year 4, £1,000 at the start of Semester 1 

and £1,000 at the start of Semester 2. 

• Award of the Scholarship in future years is 

contingent upon satisfactory performance 

and achievement of an average 60% mark 

in the previous year’s modules. 




Eligibility 

• All applicants must: 

• not be in receipt of a scholarship from an organisation other than 

Chevron or Heriot-Watt University; 

• currently be a matriculated year 2 student in either Chemical or 

Mechanical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University; and 

• be planning to study an MEng degree programme in either 

Chemical or Mechanical Engineering on entry to year 4. 




Withdrawal 

• The University, following discussion with Chevron, reserves the 

right to suspend the Scholarship if the Scholar: 

• takes a year out to complete a Diploma of Industrial Training (DIT); 

or 

• leaves the University for health or personal reasons. 

• The Scholarship shall recommence once the Scholar returns to full 

time study at Heriot-Watt and on the course for which the 

Scholarship was originally awarded, subject to approval by the 

Head of Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Teaching 

Discipline as appropriate. 

• The Scholarship will be withdrawn if the Scholar: 

• leaves the University for any other reason than as stated above; or 

• accepts a scholarship from an organisation other than Chevron or 

Heriot-Watt University; or 

• changes degree programme to a subject other than Chemical or 

Mechanical Engineering. 

• The Scholarship will also be withdrawn if the Scholar fails to achieve 

a minimum average mark of 60% in either year 3 or year 4. 

However, the Head of Chemical Engineering or Mechanical 

Engineering Teaching Discipline, as appropriate, may appeal to 

Chevron should there be reasonable mitigating circumstances. Any 

waiver of the minimum average mark requirement shall be at 

Chevron’s discretion and cannot be appealed. 




Change to BEng Programme 

• If Scholar wishes to pursue a BEng 

degree in year 4 rather than complete 

the MEng degree, the Scholar will not be 

eligible for the full funding available 

under the Scholarship. 

• Funds for year 4 will be reduced to 

£1,000. 

• Funds for year 5 will be withdrawn. 

• If the Scholar wishes to pursue this 

course of study, then they should advise 

the Development & Alumni Office in 

writing prior to the commencement of 

Semester 2 in year 4. 




Internships/Employment 

• Chevron will advise Scholars of 

vacation placements, internships, 

projects and post graduation 

employment opportunities with 

Chevron Upstream Europe. 

• Available opportunities will be 

subject to competitive entry and 

therefore award of a Scholarship 

does not guarantee a position. 



Application Process 

• Applicants will be required to: 

• Complete the scholarship application form; 

• Submit a short CV; 

• Submit an essay covering the topics described in the application form; 

and 

• Request a statement of support from a member of University staff;.

• The closing date for applications is Friday 5 July 2013. 

• The University and Chevron reserve the right to ask any applicant to 

attend an interview with Chevron staff at either Chevron’s offices in 

Aberdeen, at Heriot-Watt University, or by telephone, if not residing 

or working within reasonable travelling distance of Aberdeen or 

Edinburgh. Interviews will be held during weeks commencing 12 and 

19 August 2013. Further details will be sent to selected applicants. 

• The awards will be announced prior to the start of Semester 1 in 

September 2013.
