This physiotherapy-<strong>led</strong> <strong>exercise</strong> <strong>class</strong> is offered to you<br />

to help your rehabilitation, speed up your recovery and<br />

get you home quicker.<br />

What does the <strong>class</strong> involve?<br />

• balance <strong>exercise</strong>s<br />

• arm and leg movement/stretching <strong>exercise</strong>s<br />

• arm and leg strengthening<br />

• Tai chi breathing <strong>exercise</strong>s<br />

• group activities<br />

• advice on staying fit and healthy.<br />

All <strong>exercise</strong>s will be done whilst you are sitting in a<br />

chair. Men and women will take part in the <strong>class</strong>es.<br />

What are the benefits to me?<br />

• improved mood and motivation<br />

• reduced anxiety<br />

<strong>Physiotherapy</strong> <strong>led</strong> <strong>exercise</strong> group (2 of 3)<br />

Who runs the group?<br />

The Durrington Ward physiotherapist and two therapy assistants run the<br />

<strong>exercise</strong> <strong>class</strong>es.<br />

Who can attend the <strong>exercise</strong> session?<br />

If you are reading this leaflet it means that you have been selected by<br />

the physiotherapist as a suitable candidate to take part in this kind of<br />

rehabilitation.<br />

Before and after some of the <strong>exercise</strong> <strong>class</strong>es, you will be assessed by<br />

the physiotherapist to see if taking part in the <strong>class</strong> has had a positive<br />

impact on your balance and mobility.<br />

You will not be able to take part in the <strong>exercise</strong> <strong>class</strong> until you have been<br />

assessed by the doctor and physiotherapist. This assessment will be<br />

reviewed weekly, before the <strong>class</strong>.<br />

The maximum attendance at any one session is 8 patients. There is no<br />

limit to the number of <strong>class</strong>es you may attend whilst you are a patient on<br />

this ward.<br />

When and where will the <strong>class</strong>es be held?<br />

The <strong>class</strong>es will be held every Friday afternoon from 3.15pm till 4pm<br />

in the Day Room on Durrington Ward. You should be back to your<br />

bedspace by 4.15pm.<br />

How will I get there?<br />

The nursing staff will be told the day before as to who will be attending<br />

the <strong>exercise</strong> <strong>class</strong>. If you need some help getting to and from the <strong>class</strong>,<br />

this will be given to you, either by helping you walk to the <strong>class</strong> or by<br />

using a wheelchair if necessary.<br />

If possible, please make sure that you are ready to begin and have been<br />

to the toilet by 3pm, so allowing the session to start on time.<br />

Will I still have individual physiotherapy if I attend the <strong>class</strong>?<br />

Yes. You will still be seen individually by the physiotherapist for<br />

<strong>exercise</strong>s and education specific to your needs.<br />

So that you and your family are aware when you took part in this group<br />

<strong>exercise</strong>, the following table will be completed after each session you<br />

attend. It is also a record of any future sessions that have been planned<br />

for you.<br />
