IDP EDUCATION • Global leader in student placement services
IDP Education is very proud to be supporting this year’s
Going Global conference in Hong Kong. It gives us the
opportunity to meet delegates from many countries who
are part of international education’s global community.
What we have in common is that we are vitally concerned
with the future of international education as reflected in
the theme of this conference – World education: the new
powerhouse?
At IDP we are very aware of both the challenges and the benefits of international
education. For over 40 years we have participated in this field. Our work has included
direct delivery of education assistance in developing countries, English language teaching
and testing English language proficiency through the IELTS test. As you may know,
IDP is one of the three IELTS partners, alongside the British Council and the University
of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
Over four decades we have grown to become the world’s largest student placement
service, and have also contributed to the growth and development of international
education through our support of research and our position as co-host of the annual
Australian International Education Conference, which IDP founded in 1987.
Our expertise in international student placement is broad and deep. Working on behalf
of Australian institutional clients we were pioneers in this field and have grown into a
network of 80 offices in key education markets servicing the needs of international
students seeking placement into courses. A key to our success is our ability to match
students to the course which suits their needs, making them more likely to graduate
and increasing their level of satisfaction with their education.
Recently we expanded our placement service to include universities in the US and
Canada and we are now offering this service to UK institutions as well.
I invite you to visit us in the Exhibition Hall to meet members of our team. We will be
happy to provide you with information about how IDP can work with your institution
to support your efforts in international placement.
IDP Education Pty Ltd
IDP – the world’s largest international
student placement provider
IDP has assisted international students fulfil their goal of an
overseas education for more than 40 years.
IDP is the world’s largest international
student placement provider, is a co-owner
in IELTS (the world’s most popular high
stakes English language test), and has
a strong and expanding stake in English
language teaching throughout the South-
East Asia region.
IDP has a network of over 80 international
student placement centres, located in
more than 25 countries. The company is
co-owned by 38 Australian universities and
SEEK Ltd, a leading online employment
and training company.
IDP’s heritage
Since 1969, IDP has played a major role in
international education and development. It
was established in the time of the Colombo
Plan, as the Australian Asian Universities’
Cooperation Scheme (AAUCS) to deliver
development assistance to universities in
South-East Asia.
Development aid was the dominant driver
of international education at that time,
and IDP became a leader in delivering
education assistance to the Asian region.
In the mid-1980s, IDP began recruiting
international students for Australian
education institutions. Since then, it has
become the world’s largest international
student placement provider and has
assisted more than 300,000
students to achieve their goal of an
international education.
IDP Today
IDP is now a multi-destination student
placement company, able to place
students into the best possible courses
and institutions to suit their career goals
and lifestyle choices. Together with
Australian education institutions, IDP’s
client portfolio now includes quality
universities in the USA, Canada and the
United Kingdom. Other destinations will
be added soon.
IDP TODAY
IDP Education
opens UK doors for
international students
IDP has announced its entry into the United
Kingdom higher education market and will
place international students into UK universities
in the 2012 academic year. The move marks
a natural extension of the company’s long
history of successful placement into institutions
in Australia and now North America.
Meet Arlene Griffiths,
IDP UK Country Manager
Arlene Griffiths joined IDP
Education in October 2010
to spearhead the company’s
entry into the United Kingdom
higher education market.
Based in Cardiff, Arlene has
been busy over the past six
months establishing the new
operation and recruiting a Client
Management Team who will
bring UK universities into the
company’s portfolio.
UK universities are currently experiencing significant changes,
such as more rigorous visa regulations and domestic fee
increases. However, IDP is confident that the demand for quality
education from international students will maintain the UK’s
position as a highly sought after destination. In this challenging
operational environment for UK institutions, IDP offers a costeffective
and efficient way to promote and market courses to
a wide selection of well-qualified and motivated students.
IDP has established a UK-based Client Relationship
Management team, experienced in UK international education.
The team is currently focussing on bringing UK universities
into the company’s portfolio.
Significant work is underway across IDP’s global network in
preparation for the first group of students enrolling in Semester 1,
2012. This includes enhancement of student counsellors’ depth
of knowledge of UK institutions and their courses, backed up by
investment in a powerful CRM and knowledge base.
“To be involved in setting up
a new operation is a very
exciting time,” says Arlene.
“As a new entity, it means the
team can make a real difference
and define our direction – with
the advantage of having the
infrastructure and expertise
of a successful organisation.”
Arlene graduated with a degree
in chemistry from Bradford
University and spent the early
years of her career in the
multinational pharmaceutical
industry in sales, marketing,
and product development
roles. Her reputation for turning
around unprofitable businesses
prompted a new career path
and saw her pursuing an interest
in organisation culture and its
impact on performance. Arlene
took a sabbatical year to study
for her MBA, specialising in
Management in Developing
Countries and Change
Management, for which she
gained a distinction.
On completing her MBA, she
entered the sports sector and
was appointed to the Board of
Medisport International as Sales
and Marketing Director. Here
Arlene saw first-hand the impact
that sport can have internationally
in bridging cultures. Arlene went
on to join Cardiff University in
2002 to head their International
Office, and from there went
to the British Council in 2006
as Director, Education UK
Partnership.
Arlene has a clear vision for
her new role and of how IDP
can add value to universities
in the UK. “We are aiming to
become an extension of the
International Office team to help
make a strategic as well as a
tactical contribution,” she says.
“To be involved
in setting up a new
operation is a very
exciting time,”
“This is why we have searched
for people to join our client
management team who have
extensive experience of working
in International Offices within
universities.” She firmly believes
that by bringing together a team
of people who have worked at
the strategic level, and who know
the pressures of the environment
the international teams work in,
will create a client experience
for universities that sets new
standards.
“A critical aspect to achieve this
will be hearing what our clients
have to say,” she says. “We are
therefore looking at setting up
ways to facilitate this, such as
a user group and advisory
panels. We will only know if we
have reached our goal by what
our clients say about us.”
Arlene is proud of her Welsh
heritage and with that, of course,
comes a passion for rugby.
“I just remember the amazing
70’s when I was lucky enough
to have a father who would take
me to the internationals” she
says. Other interests include
a love of the theatre and she
feels very fortunate to have seen
some outstanding West End
and Broadway productions.
She also loves scuba diving.
“Circumstances have meant that
it has been some time since my
last dive, but I miss it so much
I am determined to start again.”
IDP in the USA
IDP entered the USA international student recruitment market in 2009 and has
played a significant role in introducing American universities to the concept of
using an agent to assist them in placing students from overseas. Many of the
schools and colleges who have now entered into partnership with IDP have
never used agents in the past.
By the beginning of 2011, 80 quality
US education institutions had partnered
with IDP, including 25 designated as
a Tier 1 National University in the latest
Best Colleges ranking by US News &
World Report.
University Partners
With partners of varying sizes and
focuses in 33 states and most major
metropolitan areas, IDP’s portfolio
successfully presents students with a
wide spectrum of quality options. IDP’s
counsellors are committed to matching
students’ abilities and interests to an
institution that is the best fit, not just one
that carries the highest rank. This means
that IDP continues to back up its ‘better
placed’ philosophy, emphasising its
assurance to serving the needs of both
students and its university partners.
Counsellor training:
Part of IDP’s commitment to its partner
clients and potential students is a rigorous
training program for its network of student
counsellors. For two weeks in late 2009,
top IDP counsellors from India and their
managers visited US college campuses
and received extensive training on the US
higher education system. Their expertise
is vital in giving students the best advice
on studying in the USA and choosing the
right institution to suit their experience
and budget and to match their education
and career.
Road shows:
In February 2011, the USA Road Show
started, covering 17 cities across the IDP
network in India, the Middle East and China,
and finishing at the end of March. This
series, which has been widely supported by
US consular representation, is a follow-up
to the successful US institution roadshows
for USA-bound students that took place at
the end of 2010.
The events give university representatives
of partner institutions the opportunity to
meet face-to-face with students and their
families, to discuss their institution and to
gather first-hand market intelligence about
the types of prospective students in India,
the Middle East and China.
IDP TODAY
IDP in Australia
IDP is committed to increasing its international
student placements in Australia and enhancing
its relationships with clients.
The Australian Client
Relations Team
The Australian Client Relations Team (CRT)
manages all aspects of IDP’s relationships
with Australian education institutions. The
CRT is responsible for managing IDPclient
agreements and provides a single
source of IDP company information.
Key Account Managers work closely
with clients to identify opportunities for
improving student placement and interact
with IDP’s regional teams to match local
market opportunities with suitable clients.
For instance, when a large Middle Eastern
training organisation wanted to upgrade
their trainers’ qualifications, the CRT liaised
with the country director and Australian
universities to organise the most effective
way to do this.
Student recruitment events
In the last 12 months, IDP conducted over
50 large-scale events in 160 venues across
22 countries. Additionally, local seminars,
interview programs and school fairs were
conducted on behalf of specific clients
and the Australian education industry.
IDP has also been trialling new ways
to reach well-qualified students, such
as the Australian Education Virtual Fair,
held in India in August 2010. Australian
institutions were given an opportunity
to ‘meet’ a wide range of students
throughout India without having to leave
Australia. Students registered on the virtual
fair site and logged on at pre-scheduled
chat time slots to talk to Australian
university representatives. Over the 586
scheduled chat hours, representatives
from 27 Australian institutions answered
almost 4,000 online and offline queries
from students across India.
IDP Counsellor Expertise
IDP ensures all its counsellors are PIER
(Professional International Education
Resources) trained. PIER provides
information and training to individuals
involved in international education and is
endorsed by the Australian Government.
IDP counsellors who are already PIER
trained are listed on www.pieronline.org.
Counsellors regularly attend Australian
institutions’ agent workshops and
familiarisation trips. In October 2010,
20 IDP country directors and regional staff
took part in campus visits to Macquarie
University, the University of Western
Sydney and the University of New South
Wales. The visits were an opportunity
to meet key university management
and faculty staff, as well as catch up
with IDP-placed students. In December,
30 more IDP counsellors attended
workshops and familiarisation trips at
various institutions around the country.
In 2011, IDP will roll out its new customer
relationship management system which
includes a knowledge base providing
improved support to all IDP counsellors.
This investment will reinforce counsellor
knowledge, retain core information
in-house, and ensure consistent and
accurate client information is readily
available throughout the network.
IDP Student Service offices
in Australia
IDP operates from most Australian capital
cities (Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide
and Sydney) and offers the same service
to international students as IDP network
offices overseas. This includes course
counselling and application processing to
Australian institutions. As well, they provide
a point of contact for IDP students
in Australia who may need to resolve
difficulties. International students can also
meet each other and enjoy a fun day out
through IDP Australia’s very successful
“Getting to Know You” networking functions.
IELTS exceeds 1.5 million tests milestone in 2010
In 2010 the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) again proved
to be the world’s most popular high stakes English language test with over
1.5 million tests being taken across more than 130 countries. Recognised
internationally as the test that sets the standard, IELTS measures the language
proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a
language of communication.
Over 6,000 organisations, such as
universities, employers, immigration
authorities and professional registration
bodies in 135 countries, recognise IELTS
scores and rely on IELTS to help select the
right people. IELTS is now available at over
800 locations worldwide. Recent additions
to the IDP: IELTS Australia network include
new test centres in Russia, South Africa
and Iran, as well as increased testing
capacity in Canada and Australia.
potential candidates
Organisations that recognise IELTS
are encouraged to list their band score
requirements online via the IELTS Global
Recognition System. This online
database lists the details and minimum
band score requirements of organisations
around the world that accept IELTS results.
It is accessible to everyone via the IELTS
website. This website received 7 million
visits in 2010, providing organisations
with exposure to millions of existing and
potential test takers. Read more and
