Welcome to the Post Graduate Diploma in Distance Education (<strong>PGDDE</strong>) programme.<br />
We hope that you have gone through the Programme Guide for <strong>PGDDE</strong> carefully. We have<br />
explained there that it is important to complete the assignments within the stipulated time to<br />
become eligible to appear for the term-end examination of <strong>IGNOU</strong>. All the assignments of<br />
<strong>PGDDE</strong> are Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) and are part of the continuous evaluation<br />
process.<br />
Before you write the assignments, read the instructions provided in the Programme Guide and go<br />
through the course materials carefully. Please read the instructions pertaining to assignments<br />
before you start writing your answers. If you have any doubt or problems pertaining to the courses<br />
and assignments, contact the concerned Academic Counsellor at your Study Centre. If you still<br />
have problems, do feel free to contact us at STRIDE.<br />
You are requested to go through the course materials first and then prepare the assignment<br />
response following the instructions. Your responses should not be a verbatim reproduction of the<br />
textual materials/blocks provided for self-learning purposes. Please submit your assignment<br />
responses at the Study Centre allotted to you before the due date as mentioned. <strong>PGDDE</strong><br />
Assignment responses are neither received nor evaluated at STRIDE.<br />

Note: The minimum standard for completion of a course and also the <strong>PGDDE</strong> programme are<br />
the following:<br />
a) Minimum 'D' grade in Continuous Evaluation i.e., each assignment in each course.<br />
b) Minimum 'C' grade in the Term-end Examination in each course.<br />
c) Final grade in a course (Assignments + Term-end Examination) should be at least<br />
'C'.<br />

1. Answer the following question in about 800 words:<br />
Describe the growth and development of distance education during the last four decades.<br />
Critically analyse the trend of convergence of different modes and systems of education<br />
today. Substantiate your answer with examples from your own context.<br />
2. Answer any three of the following in about 250-300 words each:<br />
i) What is ‘Multiplier effect’ in Open and Distance Education?<br />
ii) ‘Open and distance learning is a growing field with the development and spread of<br />
technology’-Justify this statement with examples.<br />
iii) Critically analyse the application of any one of the theory of distance education that you<br />
have studied and experienced.<br />
iv) Discuss the need for quality assurance and maintenance of Distance Education.<br />
v) Explain ‘transactional distance’ and ‘physical distance’ in teaching-learning process.<br />

1. Answer the following question in about 800 words.<br />
Explain any two theories of communication with the help of graphics/illustrations.<br />
Discuss their implications in the context of distance education.<br />
2. Answer any three of the following questions in about 300 words each.<br />
a) Distinguish between course maintenance and course revision. Discuss how you<br />
should decide on the need for revising the distance teaching materials.<br />
b) Compare self-learning print materials with conventional text materials. Discuss<br />
the pedagogical aspects of both types of materials.<br />
c) Describe the importance of assignments in the context of distance education.<br />
Support your discussion with your personal experience as a distance learner.<br />
d) Compare the roles of an editor of a newspaper and the editor of distance<br />
teaching materials.<br />
3. Consider yourself a writer of self-learning materials. Write a unit of 1200 words on a<br />
theme of your choice. Specify the level of your target group before you write a unit.<br />

e) What are the skills that would enable an academic counsellor to perform effectively?<br />

1. Answer the following question in about 800 words.<br />
Write a short critique on application of communication technology for distance education<br />
emphasizing its strengths and limitations. Analyze the future trends in communication<br />
technology vis-à-vis the socio-political and economic context of your country.<br />
2. Answer any three of the following in about 250-300 words each.<br />
a) Describe the four approaches to use media in distance education.<br />
b) Discuss the reasons for using audio in distance teaching.<br />
c) Differentiate between video cassette and TV broadcast.<br />
d) How will you design graphics for use in TV?<br />
3. Answer any one of the following in about 800 words.<br />
a) Critically analyze the use of computers in education. While discussing this question you<br />
should read the various issues discussed in Block 5, Unit 1 and also contextualize these<br />
to your own country/ institutional situation.<br />
b) “Internet and the World Wide Web can be effectively used in distance education”.<br />
Discuss this statement in the light of the capabilities of the Internet and your own<br />
institutional context.<br />
