Interdisciplinary Certificate in Disability Studies (undergraduate)
The UMKC Institute for Human Development is
offering an Interdisciplinary Certificate in Disability
Studies. The Institute is Missouri’s only
federally recognized Center for Excellence in Developmental
Disabilities and is closely aligned
with local, state and federal programs that serve
and support persons with disabilities. The Institute
also works closely with UMKC academic
units to make professional preparation more interdisciplinary
in fields that serve and support
persons with disabilities. This certificate is to be
awarded upon completion of a concentration in
Disability Studies as defined below.
Disability Studies and
Purpose of the Certificate
Disability Studies reflects a discipline that spans
the medical sciences, the social sciences and the
humanities. Disability studies touches on many
themes, from American notions of individualism
and equality, to social and legal definitions of
what constitutes a minority group, to values and
beliefs regarding gender and sexuality, to unspoken
ideas about autonomy, fitness, and citizenship,
appearance, progress, and the “health” of
society.
2005 People First Rally at the Capitol
Through the certificate program, students will collaborate
with and learn directly from persons with
disabilities, and professionals in the disability field.
Students who complete the Concentration in
Disability Studies will gain knowledge, perspective
and experience necessary to provide state-of-theart
services and supports to persons with disabilities
and their families. Students will take an enriched
perspective of the lived experience of people with
disabilities into their chosen career and professional
endeavors.
Concentration in Disability
Studies
The undergraduate Interdisciplinary Certificate in
Disability Studies consists of 19 to 21 credit hours
divided into the following components:
1. Twelve (12) hours to be obtained by completing
PACE block XVII. Disability in American Life.
This block is typically offered in the spring semester
each year and consists of the following
courses:

Humn 490P Perception and Images of
Disability in Literature and Film
(Independent Study)
Psych 406P Introduction to Developmental
Disabilities (one night per
week)
Psych 407P Developmental Disabilities
and Community Life (weekend class)
*
2. Six (6) hours to be obtained from courses in
other PACE blocks:
All six hours must be taken from a given
block, e.g., CJC 355P Crime & Public Policy,
and CJC 421 Criminal Behavior in the
United States. In this case, 6 hours are
earned by taking two courses from the
Criminal Justice and Society block. However,
with permission of Mike McCarthy or his
designee at the Institute for Human Development,
a student may select one or more
other courses to fill or partially fill this requirement.
3. One (1) hour to be obtained by completion
of Integrative Seminar in Disability Studies,
425P which will combine discussion and a
project that provides evidence the student
understands disability in the context of the
field in which the student earned the 6 hour
requirement. This seminar will be conducted
by arrangement with the instructor.
