WE AT IIT ARE MOVED TO REPORT
that the bold plan to reshape our
university is taking dynamic form.
This special report chronicles our
future—our destiny, and the many
ways it has become manifest. We
have seen the future and continue
to invent it for ourselves and
the world. Allow us to share our continued success.

destiny: manifest
In the early ’90s, we asked ourselves some hard questions. Were we adequately educating our students to live in a world
of increasing complexity and interdependence? Could we attract the most gifted students in an intensely competitive
educational environment? Did we have the academic programs and campus amenities to retain them? And did we have
the financial resources to implement needed initiatives?
The answers resulted in a bold plan for the future and a commitment to become the leading interprofessional
university—offering the kinds of programs and experiences that business, industry and science were demanding in a
rapidly changing, often unpredictable world.
An unprecedented capital campaign, called the IIT Challenge, gave lifeblood to our plan. Friends of the university are
eternally grateful for the generosity of two long-time trustees, Robert Galvin and Robert Pritzker. They provided the
initial impetus for the campaign by pledging $120 million in a challenge grant. Alumni and benefactors rose to the
challenge and the result was our most successful fund-raising campaign in history.
The Challenge campaign, originally planned for five years, exceeded its $250 million goal a year ahead of schedule.
Our goals were to attract high-achieving students, hire highly qualified faculty and establish endowed professorships in
strategically important fields, develop innovative programming, and renew our Main Campus through new buildings,
extensive infrastructure improvements and beautifying landscaping.
We have been spectacularly successful.
Our endowment soared by more than $90 million over the course of the campaign. SAT scores for incoming
freshmen rose to new highs. Six new faculty positions were endowed. Interprofessional academic and co-curricular
programs were created.
Rem Koolhaas won The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation international design competition for a campus center. The
McCormick Tribune Foundation’s $13 million donation to the endowment helped make the center possible; the state
contributed an additional $9 million toward the sound-muffling tube that encases the “L” as it passes over the building.
Landscaping has brightened the Main Campus. The core Mies van der Rohe academic buildings are slated for
renovation. An exciting new condominium and townhome community along Michigan Avenue on IIT property is already
welcoming new residents.
The momentum continues with planning for a new student residence to rise near
State Street.
IIT has chosen an ambitious future. Through the campaign, it has taken the
important first steps.
Let me be your guide as I walk you through an IIT in motion.
destiny: in control of our future

PRESIDENT
LEW COLLENS
“ We are leaders—in professional education, in scientific research, in technological
solutions to important problems. Our goal is to enable our students to develop
leadership skills that will enable them to play an important role in shaping
society and their own professions. >>> We introduced the theme of interprofessionalism
to describe these expectations. We embraced the interrelatedness
of the professions and the need for people working in teams to cross the
boundaries of their disciplines in order to solve complex problems. >>> Our
vision of the university came from our appreciation of what the world was
becoming—smaller, interdependent, highly professional, constantly changing
and imbued with sophisticated technology at all levels of business, commerce
and science…”
DAVID BAKER_ VP OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

manifest: building on our strengths
The campaign did not start in a vacuum. It began with the careful planning
of the National Commission for IIT, a blue-ribbon panel of trustees,
faculty and external experts, who recommended a future direction for the
institution. Their plans built upon IIT’s traditional strengths:
> A research faculty dedicated to teaching > Focus on a practical,
technology-based education > Outstanding placement rate of graduates
> Responsive partner of business and industry > An international
presence > The emergence of six professional schools.
This period of strategic planning was a time of self-realization and growing
expectations. The institution faced the problem of rapid technological
change that would have great impact on the operations of corporations
worldwide and on the very process of education.
The question was: What future did IIT wish for itself and what steps
should it take to get there?
The Commission recommendations were clear: To be a leader in higher
education, IIT would have to strengthen its competitive position in the
marketplace, starting with attracting outstanding high school seniors. To
prepare its graduates for the professional positions required by a rapidly
changing, technologically driven, complex global economy, IIT would have
to become an interprofessional university in which the interplay of the
various disciplines and professional schools would contribute to team
learning. To ensure its own academic vibrancy, the university would have
to remain in the community and become a partner in its redevelopment.
www.iit.edu/president/news.conference.html
DEFINING GOALS DAVID BAKER, VICE PRESIDENT OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS AT IIT, SERVED
THE NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR IIT AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. THIS DISTINGUISHED
COMMITTEE SET THE AGENDA FOR CHANGE AT THE UNIVERSITY.
“THE COMMISSION MEMBERS,” HE REMEMBERS, “REALIZED THAT LEADERSHIP WAS AN
ESSENTIAL TRAIT TO INSTILL IN OUR STUDENTS. THE UNIVERSITY WOULD ALSO HAVE TO
ASSUME A STRONG LEADERSHIP ROLE IN REDESIGNING TECHNOLOGICALLY BASED
PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION FOR THE MODERN WORLD. WHO BETTER COULD DEFINE SUCH
LEADERSHIP GOALS THAN THE EDUCATIONAL AND BUSINESS LEADERS THAT PARTICIPATED ON
THE COMMISSION? THEY WERE EXTRAORDINARY LEADERS THEMSELVES.”
PRESIDENT
LEW COLLENS
“ The campaign refocused attention on IIT. >>> Home of more Mies buildings
than any other place in the world, IIT gained the attention of architecture
enthusiasts with the addition of the Rem Koolhaas-designed McCormick Tribune
Campus Center. >>> A university known for its engineering, IIT acquired a
new reputation for the integration of its six major academic units—architecture,
science and engineering, design, business, law and psychology. >>> The
vision of service and interprofessionalism that the campaign engendered will
sustain the university for decades to come. >>> The generosity of Robert
Pritzker and Robert Galvin, whose enthusiasm for IIT fueled the campaign,
is responsible for this renewed recognition…”
manifest: making it happen
The $250 million IIT Challenge campaign has made many things happen.
IIT’s endowment increased by over $90 million.
SAT scores of incoming freshmen are significantly higher than they were
before the campaign began. At no time in IIT’s history has the university
attracted so many students who are so academically talented.
Six new endowed chairs were established in the College of Architecture,
Institute of Design, Armour College of Engineering and Science, and the
Stuart Graduate School of Business. They are aligned with strategically
important disciplines for the university’s future.
The university hired outstanding young faculty in many key areas.
Innovative academic and co-curricular programs were created to attract
bright, ambitious students and sustain them over the course of their
undergraduate studies.
A strikingly designed campus center and new residence hall are being
built, academic buildings are planned for major renovation, State Street
has been revamped and 500 trees have been planted.
“ Endowing undergraduate scholarships was one of the most important strategies
to evolve from the IIT Challenge. >>> In fall 1995, we pilot-tested the Camras
scholars program by offering attractive merit scholarships to engineering
students across the country. The next year—encouraged by strong, positive
response—we began the Camras program in earnest, awarding Camras
scholarships to 30-40 high-profile high school seniors each year. >>> We also
offered other renewable scholarships to deserving, highly qualified students.
>>> Because of the prominence of these scholarships, IIT expanded instantly
from a regional recruiting base to a national one. We sought out superior
students from all states, as far away as Alaska and Hawaii. >>> Our future
manifest: creating a community
of achievers
A university is a community of scholars. Being an outstanding university
means attracting outstanding students and faculty. That takes money,
wisdom in investing in the right people and programs, and creativity
in figuring out what makes IIT attractive to both incoming students
and faculty.
IIT began the Camras program during the first year of the campaign.
Honoring Marvin Camras, the IIT professor and research engineer who
developed magnetic recording, this scholarship program aims at educating
the next generation of leaders in engineering. These merit scholarships—
up to full tuition, room and board for as many as five years—are among
the nation’s largest scholarship awards in engineering.
The campaign also enabled recruitment of outstanding new faculty,
especially in fields such as biomedical engineering and renewable
energy—areas in which IIT research holds exceptional promise.
“ The culture of learning is rapidly changing at the university. >>> Academic
disciplines continue to provide high-quality education at IIT, as they have for the
last 110 years. But something new has been added: interprofessionalism. >>>
Beginning with the first IPROs offered in 1996, the university has staked its
future on offering interprofessional, cross-disciplinary experiences that prepare
our graduates for working on teams alongside different kinds of professionals.
This is the way global organizations conduct their affairs. IPROs are required
of all underclassmen and a number of graduate students participate in them with
enthusiasm. >>> To encourage students to broaden their experiences, we are
launching an optional co-curricular Pathways Program for all undergraduates,
beginning with a freshman focus on the interwoven themes of exploration,
discovery, invention and creativity. For other students, we will develop pathways
in such areas as leadership, undergraduate research, service learning and
international experiences…”
manifest: educating for innovation
Real-world problems are at the core of the educational
experiences known as Interprofessional Projects (IPROs).
Businesses, governmental bodies and other organizations
bring business and technical issues to teams of IIT students.
Teams have a semester to define the problem,
conduct research, consider alternatives and offer solutions.
Entrepreneurial IPROs, informally called EnPROs, are
a specialized offshoot of this approach. Funded by trustee
Ed Kaplan and a part of the Ed Kaplan Entrepreneurial
Studies Program, an EnPRO exposes teams to the entrepreneurial
process. They produce a product concept and a
business plan, which they present to a review panel that
includes venture capitalists and successful entrepreneurs.
Winning teams can receive up to $20,000 to take their new
product concept further on the road to commercialization.
The Leadership Academy, another innovation, was created
to bolster the human potential of all undergraduate
students. Fostered by gifts from trustee Al Self, his wife,
Lila, and trustee John Mitchell, the academy gives
students special opportunities to advance their personal
effectiveness and leadership skills. Students with exceptional
leadership potential earn scholarships.
Innovative programming is not limited to undergraduates
or to the Main Campus. At Chicago-Kent College of
Law, law students have been exceptionally receptive to the
interprofessional concept, seeking collaborative activities
with their colleagues across the university. In Bosnia,
IPRO teams and their advisers, under the direction of
Chicago-Kent, have set up Internet and intranet servers
and legal databases to rebuild that country’s legal infrastructure.
Other legal and interdisciplinary initiatives
have promoted the rule of law through technology in
Kosovo, Macedonia and Poland.
One of the most innovative programs at the Downtown
Campus is the Center for Law and Financial Markets,
which prepares students and industry professionals in
both legal and financial aspects of capital markets.
The campaign has been especially important for three
initiatives that make the legal system accessible to
ordinary people. The first is the Justice Web Collaboratory,
a partnership with the National Center for State Courts
that puts Web-based communication at the disposal of
judges. The second enables workable pro se representation
(representing oneself without a lawyer); the Institute of
Design and Chicago-Kent are collaborating on this project.
The third is the Illinois Technology Center—pro bono work
funded by all of the legal services organizations in Illinois
and indirectly by the Chicago Bar Foundation.
A clear goal of the campaign was to create visual and aesthetic momentum on the Main Campus.
Leading this dynamic surge is the McCormick Tribune Campus Center. Renowned architect Rem
Koolhaas won The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation international competition for its design. In the
center’s interior, unexpected juxtapositions of spaces create a sense of urban vitality. On the exterior,
a 530-foot-long tube of stainless steel and concrete, funded by the State of Illinois, will muffle the sound
of passing “L” trains.
A $1 million gift from Irving Footlik was the motivating force behind implementation of a master landscaping
plan, starting with areas adjacent to Crown Hall and Perlstein Hall. More trees, shrubs, strolling
paths and benches are planned for the rest of the campus.
Complementing these green initiatives is a reconfigured, replanted State Street, thanks to the City of
Chicago. No longer a drab arterial, State Street has become a welcoming front door to the campus, with
375 trees in a newly created median strip.
S.R. Crown Hall, perhaps the best-known Mies structure, was granted National Historic Landmark
status by the National Park Service in August 2001. As such, Crown Hall is recognized as having
“exceptional value to the nation.”
Crown Hall received other attention. A major gift from alumna Mary Elizabeth Spies Droste, matched
by the campaign, resulted in a wireless learning environment. Architecture students can now bring
laptops to studios. Thanks to a Getty Institute Conservation Grant, exterior restoration of Crown Hall
will soon begin. A gift from another source will restore the building’s south porch, the instantly
recognizable façade of this modern masterpiece.
team-building activities. BP, the
Electromotive Division of General Motors,
Daimler-Chrysler, Hewlett-Packard and Skytel
were among the sponsoring companies.
On the horizon are several industrial initiatives.
One is a center for particle technology. One of
its tasks would be to study how unwanted
crystallization occurs in certain chemicals and
pharmaceuticals. Another is providing incubator
space for newly formed tech companies, or up-todate
labs for companies that want to collaborate
with IIT on particular processes.
Research has provided a strong link with
Chicago-area companies in the past, starting with
Marvin Camras, pioneer of magnetic recording. It
continues with Hamid Arastoopour and his team,
whose work on Solid State Shear Extrusion can
economically turn plastic, polyurethane foam and
rubber into fine powders, suitable for reuse and
recycling. The scientists at IIT’s National Center
for Food Safety and Technology have created alternative
methods to pasteurization for retaining the
flavor in processed foods. In addition, the Institute
of Design has established itself as a partner to
many industrial firms because of its unique
approaches to human-centered design.
PRESIDENT
LEW COLLENS
“ Although prestige is difficult to measure, one indication of our growing
global reputation is the large number of international students that IIT attracts.
During the years of the campaign, our international enrollment nearly doubled,
from 965 students to 1,804. >>> IIT has long had an internationally connected
faculty and student body, as well as prominent alumni all over the world. The
campaign helped unite them. Inspired by the IIT Challenge campaign, international
alumni started a Committee of 100 Distinguished International Alumni
and an Asian Alumni Council. They helped trustee Kaarina Koskenalusta start
an International Board of Overseers. They contributed generously toward student
scholarships and fellowships and toward faculty chairs, and helped us
connect with foreign companies and prospective students…”
manifest: making a world
of difference
Having a diverse student body representing 97 different countries broadens the
university’s understanding of global issues and opens up new educational opportunities.
With its eye to globalization, the university has expanded its outreach in Asia and
in Europe.
In spring 2001, IIT held its second graduation ceremony in Bangalore, India, where it
offers two master’s degree programs to engineers in India’s Silicon Valley. The programs—
offered mostly via IIT Online and using streaming video on the Internet—also serve
students in other Indian cities, including Chennai and Hyderabad.
Through the university’s Paris Center, IIT architecture students have a new base for a
semester of study abroad. The center has also forged new relationships with European
engineering and architecture schools to facilitate the creation of new programs for IIT
students and alumni.
International projects and research collaborations—ranging from the design of highrise
buildings in Argentina to environmental health studies in Finland—inform every
college in the university. In the past five years, Chicago-Kent alone has had
involvements with 18 countries. As a whole, the university has alliances with 68
colleges and universities abroad.
Chicago-Kent’s Global Law and Policy Initiative provides law students and faculty
with an international forum for scholarship, discourse and action. The law school is
also home to Global Chicago, a civic organization dedicated to enhancing Chicago’s
strengths as a global city.
ASIA AND OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.
ACCORDING TO LYDIA LAZAR, ASSISTANT DEAN FOR INTERNATIONAL LAW AND POLICY, “THE INITIATIVE’S
PRESIDENT
LEW COLLENS
“ The resurgence of the Mid-South Side and the revitalization of the university
have a parallel history. >>> In 1988, the McCormick Tribune Foundation
gave IIT an $8 million grant for the improvement of residence halls, with
the understanding that IIT cooperate in attracting additional capital to the
neighborhood. From this came our involvement with community redevelopment
and the creation of the Mid-South Strategic Redevelopment Plan: Restoring
Bronzeville. Our partnerships with community groups have grown to include
such issues as housing, economic development, community development and
education. >>> Over the years, we have seen significant changes, but perhaps
none so dramatic as the efforts of the Chicago Housing Authority’s plans
to transform Stateway Gardens into a new mixed-income residential community.
>>> Few universities have been as successful as IIT in cooperating with their
surrounding urban communities. We anticipate that collaborations will continue
to evolve and expand, to the mutual benefit of both ‘town’ and ‘gown’…”
manifest: contributing to
the community
One of IIT’s goals in the Challenge campaign was to renovate and update
the Main Campus, making it more attractive to students. An ancillary goal
was working with community, city, state and private resources to facilitate
improvements in neighboring areas.
IIT has helped the community plan for a more vital 35th Street business
corridor. The university has become a resource for academic initiatives in
nearby schools—providing tutors for high school students, rewiring classrooms
for the Internet, and designing the Digital Media Center for the
educational needs of local schoolchildren.
IIT’s involvement in local schools extends to the Young Women’s
Leadership Charter School, located on the Main Campus, and to the
Wendell Phillips Academy, in which the university has a deep commitment.
It now includes special preparation of IIT students with the
university’s new Department of Mathematics and Science Education. This
program gives students an education minor that prepares them for a
teaching certificate at the secondary level. Accreditation of the program is
expected for 2002. Neighboring schools provide IIT students with an
opportunity to teach and learn at the same time.
The local community also includes Michigan Place, across the street from
the IIT residences, where townhomes are selling at market prices upward
of $400,000.
destiny: facing the future
with confidence
PRESIDENT
LEW COLLENS
“ The conclusion of the IIT Challenge is more than just the ending to a successful
story. It is also the beginning of new initiatives for the university. Because of
the campaign, we will be able to enhance the undergraduate experience of the
outstanding students we are now attracting. We will be able to provide new
opportunities for our researchers to have an impact on significant challenges
facing humanity. >>> Early next year, we expect to break ground for the first
new residential housing project in nearly half a century. In our IPROs, leadership
initiatives and entrepreneurship programs, we have developed opportunities that
significantly influence our students’ capacity to innovate and lead across the
frontiers of the professional world. Now, we truly are in a position to stimulate
students’ curiosity, courage, imagination and judgment throughout the whole
range of their undergraduate living experience. >>> Research has always been
a key to the transformation of society. We are fortunate in having the superb
talents resident in IIT Research Institute for contract research, in the National
areas of emerging technology that promise to influence and transform the ways
humankind lives and works. >>> One such area is biotechnology, where investigators
are combining an understanding of immunology and neuroscience, engineering
and mathematics, physics and chemistry. Our faculty are confronting issues of
ethics, politics, law and business. Illinois Institute of Technology—with its focus upon
interdisciplinary problem-solving—is uniquely positioned to become a national
leader in this emerging enterprise. >>> Another area of interest is the development
of sustainable energy systems. >>> Our goal is to become a recognized national
leader in creating and applying new technologies that will improve energy efficiency,
minimize pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce our reliance
upon carbon fuels. We expect to leverage our research strengths in such high-tech
areas as renewables—including photovoltaics, solar-thermal technologies and wind
energy—as well as in the use of non-fossil hydrogen to power our cars…”
