AIMS<br />
The overall aims of this thesis were <strong>to</strong> evaluate the applicability of standard <strong>assess</strong>ment methods<br />
and their ability <strong>to</strong> evaluate and reflect <strong>physical</strong> characteristics in patients with spinal muscular<br />
atrophy. A second aim was <strong>to</strong> evaluate the prevalence and impact of fatigue in spinal muscular<br />
atrophy and congenital myopathy.<br />
Specific aims<br />
To describe muscle strength, functional capability, contractures and Forced Vital Capacity in<br />
a <strong>to</strong>tal population of SMA II patients (study I)<br />
To evaluate the applicability of standard <strong>assess</strong>ment methods and their ability <strong>to</strong> detect<br />
variations in muscle strength and functional ability among these individuals (studies I, II).<br />
To evaluate decline in muscle strength over time in SMA II and III (study III).<br />
To investigate whether fatigue is a common feature in patients with SMA II and CM, and<br />
whether the Fatigue Severity Scale is an appropriate instrument <strong>to</strong> identify and evaluate this<br />
(study IV).<br />
