Please take plenty of water and food for the day. Interschool Sports, Friday 24 August – Friday 9 November 2012. Notices will be under B Block for students in Years 6 and 7 to join a sports team. Parents please be aware that students are transported by bus and all students selected for teams will be required to pay a season bus fare. Once teams are confirmed a note will be sent home requesting payment. MUSIC NEWS Changes to Mrs Lee Long’s Program Tuesday 7 August Mrs Lee Long is required to assist at a music camp on Tuesday 7 August so there will be no lessons on this day. She will transfer these lessons to Thursday 9 August. Could her students please bring their instruments to school on the Tuesday and the Thursday? Mr Grainger will take rehearsal for Senior Concert Band and year 7 Extension Music on the Tuesday as usual. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM RECRUITMENT 2013 Our Instrumental Music recruiting process is commencing earlier this year to encourage maximum participation in our fantastic music program in 2013. Students in Year 2 will be encouraged to consider entry into the Strings program and students in Year 4 will be offered places in the band program. Our Instrumental Music program offers one 30 minute lesson per week and one before school rehearsal each week. Students then participate in a music program to learn an instrument with several performances throughout the year on school parades and in local school music competitions. A student’s commitment to this program is approx 15 minutes per night practice on the instrument and reliably attending schedule rehearsals and lessons. Participation in the Strings program is a 5 year commitment and in the Band Program is a 3 year commitment. If your child leaves the school during this period and attends another state school then he/she automatically is enrolled in that school’s music program. There is a music handbook containing all information on the program and outlining the costs to parents. Costs include a music levy, instrument purchase/hire and performance uniform (purchased at Uniform shop). Students are offered an instrument based on their suitability to that instrument and to balance the ensemble or band. Our instruments on offer are violins, violas, cellos, double base, woodwind, percussion and brass. The recruitment process: • All students in years 2 and 4 are assessed on their music ability by our classroom music teacher, Mrs Hoey during class time. • 2013 Instrumental Music flyer sent home to Yr 2 and yr 4 students • Class teachers then complete a learning profile on each of the qualifying students from this assessment (e.g. independence in learning, reliable, on task behaviour, etc) • Instrumental teachers assess students on different instruments • Parent Information Night on Monday 3 September 6.30pm – 7.30pm for all Year 2 and Year 4 students and parents in hall • Teachers distribute offers to qualifying students to join the program • Parents respond with a confirmation/rejection • Parents are invoiced for the program. 4
STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS Our next meeting will be held on Friday 17 August 2012 at 8.00am in the Library. SCIENCEWORX - Wed 3.15 – 4.15pm, Junior Tech Lab Our third session was a presentation on Statistics by Dr Melissa Dobbie. Another fantastic session which taught us the language of the mathematician and we found out about the significance of numbers in data. Dr Dobbie is employed by the CSIRO and she showed us some of her latest projects including how statistics inform scientists on how to protect our wonderful Barrier Reef. Thank you Dr Dobbie for a great session in Scienceworx. Final research preparation Scienceworx Research Celebration SHARING COMMUNICATIONS To keep parents up to date with classroom learning our Year Level teams will send home a Year Level Newsletter once per term. This year we have been trialling the new Australian curriculum ( English, Maths and Science) in our classrooms and our teachers have only been informed of the units of work approximately 6 – 8 weeks ahead of delivery. In 2013 we will be implementing a new History curriculum. Our teachers and students are enjoying the new challenges presented by this fantastic initiative along with the online resources. So now we would like to help parents understand the topics being covered in the classroom so they can assist their child with any homework or projects associated with the classroom learning. From the Acting Deputy Principal, Wendy Fender. Picnic Games – 9am to 12.30pm The Picnic Games (Junior Sports Day) will be held next Friday, 10 August, on the bottom oval. The children rotate through a range of physical education activities with their class group. Parents are welcome to join us. There will be a picnic on Singleton Oval at 12:30pm. Please ensure that your child has a hat, drink bottle and sunscreen. 5
