c.a.r.u.s. Information Technology <strong>AG</strong> in Norderstedt, Hamburg is<br />

the nucleus of an expanding company group with more than<br />

260 permanent employees in four European countries in nine cities.<br />

Founded in 1987, the group’s turnover in 2003 amounted to € 68 Mil.<br />

The core competence of the entire c.a.r.u.s. group is based on the<br />

development of commercial software solutions based on c.a.r.u.s.<br />

FRAMEWORKS (see pg. 3). In addition to that since 1990<br />

c.a.r.u.s. has become an expert for IBM hardware solutions in the B-2-B<br />

market. Already in 1993 c.a.r.u.s. qualified to enter the group of IBM’s<br />

highest quality business partners and was officially granted the title<br />

‘IBM Premier Partner’ (since 2001) (see pg. 4).<br />

Responsibility is the connecting link between software and hardware.<br />

The success of increasingly complex IT projects depends on the competence<br />

and overview of a central agent. For more than a decade our<br />

clients have been trusting us with this key role.<br />

Software development is our homebase. In 1987 the first professional<br />

client/server application in Europe (ticketing for musicals)<br />

became the starting point for individual programming. Today<br />

customer specific software for high volume commercial applications<br />

is still one of our core competences.<br />

Since 1991 we dedicate a substantial part of our extensive R&D<br />

activities to FRAMEWORKS. The concept is based on the ‘ancient’<br />

idea of creating a library of re-occuring ‘frame elements’ within a<br />

specific software project and the general reuse of these elements<br />

in comparable software projects. Many have tried and failed to<br />

master this complexity within a constantly changing environment<br />

and rapidly evolving development platforms as it requires utmost<br />

skill and dedication. c.a.r.u.s. gives daily proof that this is a valid<br />

and mature concept as they offer only frameworks which have been<br />

proven successful and reliable within c.a.r.u.s. own products. Software<br />

products with such high level of standardisation are<br />

available for the following industries: RETAIL, HEALTH and TELCO.<br />

Already ten years ago we started offering our own<br />

hardware-services as a consequence from both our quality<br />

approach and the constant quarrel with incompatible<br />

IT components.<br />

IBM was and still is the only hardware partner capable of<br />

supplying appropriate experience, expertise and product<br />

range to be a perfect match for our concept of quality. In<br />

return c.a.r.u.s. merited the IBM PREMIER PARTNER status<br />

which is the highest level of recognition given by IBM to its<br />

‘Response ability’ basically describes the ‘capability to respond’.<br />

Only deep understanding based on the virtues concentrated<br />

listening and precise observation enables an appropriate<br />

response.<br />

Approximately one fourth of all software projects fail, half of the<br />

projects exceed time and budget due to a lack of ‘understanding’.<br />

Since 1994, the rate of successful projects statistically stagnates<br />

below one third.* Most problems occur right at the beginning due<br />

to a lack of planning and clarity of what exactly is required by<br />

whom at what time and from which supplier. Projects often exceed<br />

their time lines and suffer from fluctuation of knowledgeable<br />

employees and the subsequent loss of concepts and requirements.<br />

Consequently it becomes almost impossible for the project leader<br />

to steer a project within its set ‘boundaries’ and to complete it<br />

successfully.<br />
