New Winter Class Descriptions (see times and fees, p.4)
Dance To Fitness, with Tina Valintinetti
Move your feet to the beat! Dance to fitness with easy to follow choreography, set to a variety
of music and geared toward the non-dancer. Formerly called Latin Aerodance, this class
has been reformatted to include popular music, Broadway hits, Latin flavor, swing, jazz, etc.
All levels of fitness are welcome, since you can adapt the choreography to suit your needs.
Wear comfortable clothing and supportive sneakers (only indoor shoes are allowed in the
studio). You may also wish to bring a water bottle. Tina Valentinetti is a member of MSAC.
She has been teaching dance fitness classes for the past 26 years, and was certified to teach
both Jacki Sorensen and Jazzercise dance fitness programs, as well as the Arthritis Foundation
PACE program. (NO CLASS 1/14).
Facebook: An Introduction, with Erika Mitchell
Facebook is a free Internet communication service that can help you strengthen ties with
family members, renew friendships from long ago, and get to know your neighbors better. In
this class, we will learn how to get the most from Facebook: how to view and share photos
of the grandkids, trade school memories with childhood friends, and play games like Scrabble
with neighbors or new friends from around the world. We will also discuss privacy and
safety issues as well as Facebook etiquette so that you can use this powerful and fun service
with confidence and stay out of trouble. No prior computer experience is necessary; let instructor
know if you do not already have an e-mail account before the course begins. Personal
laptops can be used—let staff know when you register whether or not you have one.
Erika Mitchell, Ph.D. in Linguistics and owner-operator of Frizzle Mountain Books and
Frizzle Mountain Studios, has taught abroad and in the US in computer literacy and Internet
technology, English, and English as a Second Language. An avid photographer of local culture
and environments, Erika has also been known to play with the MSAC band!
Facebook & Social Media: Getting More Savvy, with Erika Mitchell
Content will be based on the interests of those who register. (Begins in Feb.)
Film Series: "Neglected Gems,” with Rick Winston
This new series will encompass comedies ("A Private Function"), dramas ("Nothing But a
Man"), romances ("Remember the Night"), and thrillers ("Dead of Night") from 1940 to
2000. What these disparate films share is that they all deserve to be seen by more people. So
take a chance with some unfamiliar films.... and enjoy MSAC’s new equipment and space as
we welcome Rick back for another great series!
More new classes described on next page >>>

New Winter Classes, continued from previous page
Fly Tying, with Tom Cate
The course will be offered at the beginner level but intermediate tiers will be accommodated.
The course will explore different materials, techniques, styles of flies, and entomology. There is
a materials fee of $25 as all materials will be provided. Each participant will need to provide
their own fly tying tools, and a list is available in the office, along with possible sources and instructor’s
contact info. Tom Cate has been an educator in central Vermont for 37 years. Fly fishing
and fly tying are two of his passions, and he is excited to share what he knows with you.
Hand-building in Clay, with Nicole Galipeau
In this introduction to the art of hand-building in clay, we will begin by using small slabs to make
similar sculptures as a class. For those new to working in clay, this will enable us to get to know
the clay body and various techniques. After this group project, we will make small sculptures or
vessels in accordance with individual interest. Work will be finished and fired at Montpelier
Mud. A small fee for materials and firing will be extra. Nicole Galipeau is a local artist with a
strong love for figurative art in clay. She has deep interest in the human psyche and finds working
with a group in a studio setting to be most therapeutic and gratifying.
Ten Minute Play Writing, with Linda Quinlan
Original plays should have 1 to 3 characters and be approximately 10 pages or less. Plays can be
any genre from mystery, personal to the political. A few of the plays will be dramatically performed
in March. Bring original plays and copies for reading and critique to the group. We will
discuss play writing format, list of characters and setting up scenes. Linda Quinlan, a new member
at MSAC and resident at 58 Barre Street, was Wisconsin Poet of the Year, and her poetry and
creative writing has been widely published. She had her original play "When I Go To Sleep" performed
at Ten Fest in Waitsfield, Vermont.
Yoga for Low Back & Hips, with Ellen Fein
Explore and learn some simple therapeutic yoga techniques for discomfort and/or pain in your
low back and/or hips. This class is designed for individuals who want to take active steps in selfcare
to reduce pain and increase range of motion. This is NOT a substitute for medical care.
Ellen Fein is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Registered Yoga Teacher (R-500) and a Certified
Yoga Therapist who works with people who are interested in being active in their own health
and healing. She is on the Faculty for the Center for Mind-Body Medicine and the American
THANKFUL FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Volunteers who are working to make meals happen at MSAC again!
9
A big thank you to several volunteers whose hard work have brought the possibility
of having MSAC’s kitchen up and running several steps closer to reality.
Recently, Laurie Theiss from Just Basics, Inc., along with MSAC members Helen Eldred, Ron
Merkin, Rebecca Sheppard, and four members of AmeriCorps completed an extensive kitchen
inventory, opening and sorting 32 boxes of supplies and equipment which had been saved from
the fire and kept in storage for the last three years. We now have an extensive inventory list.
Longtime meals volunteers Irene Nettler, Gen Olson, Barbara Arly, and newer volunteer, Joan
Moreau also deserve a big hurrah for helping keep our various Tuesday meals going without a
properly completed kitchen since our move back to 58 Barre Street!
A special thank you also goes to Loren Miller, a two year MSAC
member, whose help was essential to the inventory project. Loren had
originally joined to take a Tai Chi class three years ago, but, this fall
when she inquired about offering a series of cooking classes, she found
herself volunteered for the “kitchen project.” Her talents for kitchen inventory
were quickly realized, when she was the only volunteer who
could identify a lard injector.
“I just love doing things like this kitchen project, doing things for
the community,” Loren said as she took a break from creating a spreadsheet
for the inventory. A native of Pittsburgh, Loren offered that she
started cooking at age five. Although strongly influenced by Julia Child’s approach to fine cuisine,
she also learned from family and friends. She still enjoys cooking for them and specializes
in ethnic foods. “All of it—Indian, Greek, Turkish, Italian—I love it all.”
MSAC members may recall visiting Loren’s kitchen store, Mise En Place, located for 13
years in downtown Montpelier. Now with that behind her, and children grown, Loren is hoping
to share her love for cooking as an instructor when the MSAC kitchen opens. Loren’s experience
also came in very helpful while handling logistics for the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
in November.
Another volunteer with a cooking history is Larry Masure.
Larry has deep Vermont roots, his family having settled in Wheelock
around the time of the American Revolution. Food production and
cooking have been a way of life for the Masure family for generations.
Whether it was on his parents’ farm in Wheelock, or his grandparents’
in East Montpelier, Larry helped raise, preserve, and cook
the food the family ate. “We didn’t go to the store, except maybe to
buy herbs. We had a huge garden.” He also fondly recalled making
maple syrup, and the important contribution of his uncle to the family
larder. “He was a bee man, he would save a hundred pounds of honey
in the hive to get the bees through winter, but we got to eat the rest.”
Larry’s grandfather represented Wheelock in the Vermont legislature for many years.
While visiting, Larry made friends in Montpelier, and with them moved to Colorado. There he
worked in local restaurants for a while before returning to Montpelier, where he spent several
enjoyable years as a breakfast and brunch cook at the Horn of the Moon restaurant, a favorite
gathering spot for Montpelier residents. Since leaving Horn of the Moon, Larry has stayed busy,
and in recent years has become something of a one man food distribution system. (Cont. p.10)

(Continued from p.9, Volunteers)
When he joined MSAC about ten years ago, Larry remembers it was “about the time
Margaret Adams Colby was hired, but I got more involved about three years ago when I
heard they needed someone to pick up bakery goods at the store.” Now early Monday mornings
Larry delivers boxes of free bakery goods that he picks up at a local grocery store the
day before-- food which otherwise would not have been put to such good use. Larry was also
found helping with the set-up on the day before our Thanksgiving Volunteer luncheon.
Larry has also volunteered for 24 years at the Montpelier Youth Service Bureau’s
Thanksgiving dinner. “I cook a turkey, bring it over, help in the kitchen, and then take care of
the food afterwards, getting it to churches and places the leftovers can be used. A lot of work,
but it’s fun.” Larry also has a home garden where he enjoys growing his own tomatoes, and
giving away the extra. He hopes that a gardening program will be started at MSAC, and
would like to volunteer in that effort. “It would be great to have fresh food to help people
here.” And finally, true to his deep seated help thy neighbor Vermont heritage, Larry describes
assisting a very elderly neighbor get her food home from the Food Bank. “Those
packages can be really heavy, and that load was just too much for her.” With someone like
Larry volunteering, the load becomes lighter for all of us. ~submitted by Liz Dodd
11 MSAC, YOU ROCK
When I joined the senior center I was suffering from
depression after a very long winter.
I spent days on end never leaving my apartment, eating
myself into oblivion. I needed help to get out of my own
way.
I signed up for Tai Chi for Arthritis and Creative
Writing. My only goal was to attend every class to get out of
my apartment. It wasn’t before long that I started to feel
better about myself and life.
The wonderful unexpected gift that I didn’t sign up
for is that I’m learning how not to get old in my heart.
Thank you, MSAC, you rock!!!
MSAC Van Trip Report from November:
Northern Stage’s Production of “Sleuth”
It was a beautiful fall day on November 8th as seven
of us headed to White River Junction to see Northern
Stage Theater's production of "Sleuth". The play
was billed as a mystery, but it was more than that. It
had comedy, special effects, as well as costume disguises.
The two actors were well chosen for their
parts, and the set and props very detailed. Of course,
there was a twist at the end. The theater is housed
in the second floor of the Briggs Opera House,
which is in the former Coolidge Hotel, and there is a
delightful coffee shop on the corner for a quick
snack before the show.

Winter Classes will run for a maximum of 10 weeks, starting January 6th. You may
ask why we have shortened those classes that previously ran for 12 weeks? Switching
to a ten-class quarter, still quite lengthy compared with many classes in the community,
allows our instructors (some of whom are volunteers) to have a break between
class quarters. It also allows members and office staff to navigate the registration
weeks during the beginning and end of the quarter more smoothly. Finally, it helps us
reduce our expenditures, which is especially important this year while we’ve been incurring
so many unbudgeted expenses while transitioning to the new facility. We
thank you in advance for your understanding!
Other changes in Class Registration this Winter: Continuing classes will require
eight (not six) members to register in order to “run.” New classes will still have a
minimum of six. So, if you enjoy one of those classes that has had low registration or
attendance in recent quarters, consider recruiting a friend or two in order to help ensure
the class keeps running and to enrich the experience of all in the class!
Strategic Planning: The Advisory Board, Staff, and several community partners will
be embarking on a strategic planning process in mid-December. Please share your
ideas; participate in the survey available online (see the website) or in the office, before
December 12th.
Town Funding: If your town’s status as a “Supporting Town” of MSAC is important
to you (it gives you a discount on your annual dues and the privilege to register for
classes before members from other towns), then please contact us in the office to find
out how you can help with petitioning, informing your fellow citizens, and helping on
Town Meeting Day. Berlin, Calais, E. Montpelier, Middlesex, Worcester. We especially
need members from Berlin, Middlesex and Worcester for petition work!
Fran Krushenick has organized a weekly delivery to the Montpelier Food Pantry,
where she already volunteers. You can find the basket by the bookshelf in our lobby
and make a contribution of non-perishables!
We have received our new P.A. system, which was funded by a gift of $1000 from the
Elks Club for this purpose, and also subsidized by Kevin Crossett, owner of Play it
Again Sam. Along with a new microphone and mixer, we have two speakers that can
be pedestal or wall-mounted, and they have already been put to use during Osher lectures.
Available for concerts, talks, and other events, too!
Our Clavinova electronic piano has returned from post-fire storage and works! It
may be played in the game room or moved into the community room for a performance.
Several members have already taken advantage of the closed room practice
Our new window shades (to replace the felt in the Community Room!) will be installed
in all rooms except the kitchen, sometime soon after Thanksgiving. There will
be room-darkening options in the Activity Room and the Community Room! We are
also making good progress on getting all the necessary kitchen equipment estimates
and labor bids, so hope to reschedule our proposal to City Council in December or
January. Stay posted or ask Janna for more info if you’re curious!
