About TAG
Planned Parenthood of Illinois’
(PPIL) Teen Awareness Group
(TAG) is a peer education
program that combines
comprehensive, medically
accurate, age-appropriate
sexuality education with
positive youth development.
The goal of TAG is to lower the risks of teen
pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections
(STIs) among teens by working to replace fear,
misinformation and risky behavior with education,
information and responsible decision making.
Through TAG, PPIL hires high school students
every summer to become part-time employees
and work as peer educators in their communities.
Studies have shown that peer education programs
have a positive impact on delaying sexual activity,
increasing sexual health knowledge and increasing
the use of contraceptives.
PPIL has been providing the TAG peer education
program in communities for over 30 years.
Every year, each TAG program trains over 50
educators and reaches thousands of young
people in their communities.
Training
Peer educators receive intensive sexual health and life
skills education. The training equips them to provide
programming, information and referrals for health care
services to teens in classrooms, large and small group
settings, as well as one-on-one sessions. During the
summer months peer educators receive over 60 hours
of training, and during the school year they receive
ongoing training and skills development at mandatory
weekly meetings.
Peer educators take the skills and information they
learn and reach out to other teens, parents and
community members about making healthy decisions.
Programming Offered
Peer educators can provide programming to local
schools, community groups, churches and other
religious organizations, after school groups and
individuals regarding a variety of sexual health
topics including:
• Reproductive health care
• Contraception
• STIs
• HIV/AIDS
• Healthy relationships
• Making decisions about sex
• Parent-teen communication (programs for
parents and other adults available)
• Sexuality and sexual orientation
• Abstinence
Educational sessions can be transitioned to fit the
needs of a specific organization. Adaptations to
programming can be suggested to ensure age and
cultural appropriateness for the audience.
About TAG teens
TAG peer educators come from diverse backgrounds
and are bound by the same confidentiality and privacy
policies as our medical staff. Their training and involvement
in the TAG program builds skills so that they can
become experts in their schools and communities.
Testimonials
“You did such a wonderful job presenting information
to the students. I had many students tell me they
learned things they had never known and they learned
the truth about what they thought they knew. Keep up
this important work with such a successful program.”
- Junior High School Social Worker
“Teen Awareness Group is an important program for
the community and teens. I love being able to learn
and reaching out and teaching others. I love being a
peer educator – it is the best job that I have ever had.”
- First Year Peer Educator
“TAG provides a much needed service to our community.
It is a service the young people in our community would
not otherwise receive.”
