dear friends
Planned Parenthood Affiliates have been providing essential quality healthcare
services and educational programs for Kentucky’s women, men and teens since
1933. On January 1, 2008, two Kentucky Affiliates, Planned Parenthood of the
Bluegrass (PPBG) and Planned Parenthood of Louisville (PPL), joined together
in this mission of critical effort to become Planned Parenthood of Kentucky
(PPKY), launching a new era of community service and outreach.
The nearly 150 years of combined community service by PPBG and PPL formed
the foundation upon which PPKY staff, donors, activists, volunteers, board
members and community supporters continue to build and expand services,
programs and advocacy in Kentucky. As you review this 2008 PPKY Annual
Report, you will learn about the significant accomplishments achieved, and how
the diversity and scope of these initiatives continue to expand.
Some of the year’s most impressive highlights include launching on-line
appointment requests, Implanon, HPV vaccine, and HIV rapid testing; establishing
teenR.E.A.C.H.; recruiting bilingual staff; advocating on behalf of Kentuckians;
and standardizing services, programs and systems across the statewide Affiliate.
As 2008 drew to a close, our nation experienced an economic downturn
that affected many. The impact of this change is especially evident in the
increased number of women, men and teens seeking services that fall below
150% of the Federal Poverty Level. Like the people we serve, we must now
do more with less.
We invite you to take a few moments to learn about the ways your support,
and the support of your fellow Kentuckians, has made, and continues to make
a difference in our individual communities and across the Commonwealth.
celebration luncheon
To celebrate the formation of the new, statewide Planned
Parenthood of Kentucky (PPKY) affiliate, more than 200
supporters and community leaders gathered for the Celebration
Luncheon on February 28, 2008.
Former board member Libby Voyles
and her mother Elizabeth Hardwick
(1915-2009), both long-time Planned
Parenthood supporters, “celebrate”
the formation of Planned
Parenthood of Kentucky with PPFA
President and CEO Cecile Richards.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) President
and CEO Cecile Richards was the keynote speaker for the event.
Ms. Richards congratulated PPKY on its successful joining of
Planned Parenthood of the Bluegrass and Planned Parenthood of
Louisville, and the expansion of its service territory to 78 counties
in the Commonwealth. During the luncheon, PPKY also launched
its “Celebrate PPKY” video and brochure, which highlight the
organization’s life-changing work and its influence on individuals,
families and the community.
The Celebration Luncheon brought together generations of
supporters to commemorate the work of Planned Parenthood
in Kentucky over the past 75 years and to launch a united
effort to advance reproductive and sexual health in the
Commonwealth through expanded services and programs.
“Without health insurance, Planned Parenthood has been
a life-saver. I fully support its continued existence!”
—Anonymous, June 2009
“I feel like I have a real purpose in life and that is informing
people of their rights and their health.”
—Sarah, teenR.E.A.C.H. peer educator, June 2009
highlights of merger
“I am relieved knowing that my son is learning about these
things through education and not experimentation.”
—Anne, Let’s Talk parent, April 2009
The joining of Planned Parenthood of the Bluegrass
and Planned Parenthood of Louisville to form
Planned Parenthood of Kentucky generated a number
of positive changes in 2008.
• Administrative services, including the finance department,
consolidated and moved to a single location.
• General ledgers of the two organizations merged into a
single updated software system.

medical services
Kentuckians face numerous challenges when it comes to family planning and
reproductive health. In fact, Kentucky has the 7th highest rate of cervical cancer diagnoses
and deaths in the nation and the 8th highest rate of teen pregnancy. During these
difficult economic times, accessing preventative healthcare services is more important
and more challenging than ever. PPKY is here to help.
From birth control to cancer screenings to treatment for sexually transmitted infections,
PPKY is there for Kentuckians’ reproductive health needs. In 2008, PPKY services included:
• 13,060 visits to 4 health centers
• 1,936 breast exams
• 2,335 cervical cancer tests
• 1,998 STI tests
• 1,423 pregnancy tests
PPKY medical centers meet a vital need for healthcare services in Kentucky communities,
and for many of our patients, we are their only source of healthcare. Over the past year,
PPKY has worked hard to continue expanding its services in order to better meet the
needs of Kentucky’s women, men and teens by:
• Offering the Gardasil vaccine, which prevents some types of the human papillomavirus
(HPV) that cause cervical cancer.
• Offering the new long-term, reversible contraceptive Implanon.
• Coordinating Mobile Mammogram services at the Louisville Health Center.
• Offering rapid HIV testing on-site and organizing a free HIV screening day at
Eastern Kentucky University.
• Expanding our website to include an online appointment feature, as well as standardized
appointment scheduling across the affiliate.
• Recruiting bilingual staff and securing medical interpretation training to
better serve limited-English patients.
• Creating gender neutral health centers that served more than 200 males in 2008.
education, community outreach and advocacy
From our health centers to the classrooms and community centers where we offer
educational presentations, PPKY regularly encounters Kentuckians trying to make
decisions about their reproductive health with faulty or inadequate information.
PPKY is committed to providing medically accurate information that is honest,
comprehensive and age-appropriate. We believe that education supports healthy
decision-making, and is crucial to reducing unintended pregnancy and disease.
Through educational workshops and presentations, peer education and community
events, PPKY works to help Kentucky’s women, men and teens make informed and
healthy choices about their reproductive and sexual health. In 2008, we launched
and expanded a number of efforts to increase awareness about reproductive and
sexual health issues as well as PPKY services and programs.
• teenR.E.A.C.H. (Real Education About Choices for
our Health): With financial support from grants provided
by the Gheens Foundation and the Barth Foundation,
as well as many individual donors, PPKY re-launched
its peer education program, renamed teenR.E.A.C.H.
by the teen participants. Throughout the 2008-09
academic year, PPKY trained 22 youth from seven area
high schools utilizing a 30-hour training curriculum
focused on healthy relationships and reproductive health.
Over the past year, peer educators have provided
life-changing information to
more than 500 teens and their
families through formal
presentations
and everyday conversation.
• Let’s Talk: Parent-Teen Communication Workshop:
Let’s Talk provides a safe place for community teens and
their parents or other trusted adults to improve
communication within their family, as well as to learn
important information about healthy relationships and
sexual health. Facilitated by PPKY staff and teenR.E.A.C.H.
peer educators, Let’s Talk participants receive information
together in one group and in small break-out groups
based on age and gender. Since the program was
initiated in December 2008, more than 80 teens and
families have participated.
• Campus Outreach: PPKY is active on college campuses
across the Commonwealth. Staff helped train 13 health
peer educators at the University of Louisville and Eastern
Kentucky University on safer sex and reproductive health.
With help from EKU peer educators, PPKY also hosted a
Free STD Screening Day, testing more than 40 students
for sexually transmitted infections. Further, the University
of Kentucky’s VOX (Voices for Planned Parenthood)
chapter distributed 1,000 condoms on campus during the
national Planned Parenthood week of action.
• Holiday Gift Bags: Between Christmas 2008 and New
Year’s 2009, PPKY distributed 1,000 informational gift
bags across the Commonwealth to increase awareness
about reproductive health and PPKY services. Employees
of retailers and salons, primarily in Louisville and
Lexington, received the gifts bags that included PPKY
literature, Proper Attire condoms and a PPKY magnet.
• Advocacy: With greater strength as a statewide
organization, PPKY works to advance reproductive and
sexual health in Kentucky. From providing legislative
updates to supporters, to publicizing reproductive health
issues in the media, PPKY seeks to protect the full range
of reproductive health services in the Commonwealth.
In 2008, PPKY:
• Collaborated with community partners such as the
ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, Reproductive
Coalition for Reproductive Choice, National Council
for Jewish Women and Americans United for the
Separation for Church and State to publish an op-ed
piece in the Louisville Courier-Journal opposing the
Bush administration’s 11th-hour “provider conscience”
rule. The rule would have posed a series of threats
to reproductive health nationwide.
• Coordinated with community partners to publicize
a report by the Sexuality Information and Education
Council of the United States (SIECUS) that focuses
on ineffective abstinence-only-until-marriage
programs in Kentucky and the negative impact
on the Commonwealth’s women, men and teens.
• Established an “Action Alert” email list so that
community supporters may receive regular updates
from PPKY on local, state and national issues related
to reproductive and sexual health.
• Conducted efforts throughout the fall to encourage
Kentuckians to consider reproductive health issues
when deciding their votes.
• Affiliate resources realigned to provide for more efficient
ratio of support staff to clinicians.
• Conversion to a single integrated electronic practice
management system that provides a platform for full
integration with an electronic health record system.
• Vendor contracts re-negotiated in order to achieve optimal
pricing for services and goods.
• Completion of the 2008 financial audit provided PPKY
with an unqualified opinion, the most favorable opinion
an independent auditor can render.
