<strong>Field</strong> <strong>Organizer</strong><br />

Regional Director of Public Policy<br />

SUMMARY:<br />

The <strong>Field</strong> <strong>Organizer</strong> will work closely with the Regional Director of Public Policy to formalize and streamline grassroots<br />

activities while building capacity and infrastructure. The <strong>Organizer</strong> will also provide key support for outreach activities,<br />

particularly around volunteer activities and issue-based campaigns. The <strong>Field</strong> <strong>Organizer</strong> coordinates and manages interns<br />

to implement the agency's grassroots organizing activities in Jackson, MS and surrounding areas. The purpose of the<br />

grassroots organizing program is to mobilize individuals to voice support for reproductive freedom and full access to<br />

health services. Please note that this is an entry level position.<br />

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS<br />

Represents PPSE in the Community<br />

• Represent PPSE in coalitions<br />

• Direct lobbying of elected officials<br />

• Coordinates lobby trainings, legislative briefings, and other presentations for local groups.<br />

• Cultivate relationships with new community groups<br />

Grassroots Organizing<br />

• Develop organizing plan and goals in conjunction with Regional Director of Public Policy for recruiting and<br />

maintaining activists this includes working with interns on implementation.<br />

• Identify tabling, recruiting, and other visibility opportunities<br />

• Identify and cultivate “key contacts” in targeted communities.<br />

• Mobilize activists for special purposes, including letter writing campaigns, phone banking, canvassing, days of action,<br />

visibility events, legislative lobbying, house parties, etc.<br />

External Communication<br />

• Create advocacy alerts for activist activities and events.<br />

• Prepare reports for Regional Director of Public Policy.<br />

Database Management<br />

• Oversee maintenance of data in activist database.<br />

• Monitor list growth; set list growth goals.<br />

Intern Management<br />

• Recruit interns.<br />

• Create intern work plans, organize their training and supervise their work.<br />

Administrative Duties<br />

• Supply Regional Director with information for grant reports, board reports, and strategic plan updates.<br />

• Participate in annual planning process.<br />

• Track time spent and expenses as required.<br />

• Coordinate training for volunteers and interns, with Regional Director of Public Policy and VP of External Affairs.<br />

• Completes other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:<br />

Education:<br />

• Bachelor level degree in political science/public health or other related field (preferred)<br />

Experience:<br />

• Knowledgeable about issues of sexuality education, reproductive health and social justice.<br />

• Experience preferred in lobbying and/or political campaigns, or community organizing .<br />

• Familiarity with the legislative process preferred.<br />

• Familiarity with and commitment to <strong>Planned</strong> <strong>Parenthood</strong> mission.<br />

Skills:<br />

• Strong computer skills, including database management. Experience with Convio and VAN preferred.<br />

• Exceptional interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, including writing skills.<br />

• Ability to earn the confidence of a wide range of internal and external constituents.<br />

• Ability to demonstrate public speaking and training skills preferred.<br />

• Ability to gracefully manage multiple projects and to meet multiple deadlines.<br />

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.<br />

Physical demands:<br />

• Long hours at the computer are necessary at times.<br />

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel within the community for programs<br />

• Ability to lift 50 pounds to carry items to and from health fairs and community events.<br />

• Flexibility in work hours as some evenings and occasional weekend hours are necessary.<br />

Languages spoken:<br />

• English required, some Spanish preferred.<br />
