MADAME PREZ SEZ...Pamela Castellanos
Winter’s latest gift. At the end of a mild,
virtually snowless winter, we finally have
snow. I wonder how many of you have put
away your skis for the season and are
thinking of hiking and biking. Perhaps a
few will go to Ski Brule for Winter Carnival
or organize small group ski vacations during the upcoming
weeks. The UP may be skiable for a while yet, so let
us know if you are interested in a last minute day or
weekend get-a-away. If you have got a plan, we will
share the information with the Nomads for a drive-up ski
trip.
Thoughts of Spring. Thanks to Theresa Rebensky for
organizing six bicycle trips this summer. Theresa has
been very successful in past seasons with getting Nomads
together to bike for fun and exercise. We are appreciative
of the time and planning that goes into this, and for
her and George’s leadership on the trails. Watch for details
in the newsletters or for Theresa’s famous blast
emails reminding us of dates and locations.
Summer fun. Nomads love summer almost as much as
winter, and celebrate the beginning of summer with our
first annual picnic June 1 st . Even so, we hope to announce
our ski destinations for the next season in early
summer, so stay tuned. Next year may be our turn for
snow!
Get out the vote. Nominations are still open for the
following Board positions: President, Secretary, Midwest
Director, and Social Director. Elections will be held at the
April General meeting, so nominations may be submitted
to Bonnie Lunde or Steve Young or made from the floor
at the March and April meetings. Please remember you
can self-nominate, and competition is encouraged even if
current Board members agree to run again.
Over and out….P.C.
WESTERN AND MID-WEST SKIING
Recap of the January 25, 2013
CMSC European Trip
St Anton, Arlberg and Vienna Austria
was the destination. We flew Swiss Air
nonstop from Chicago to Zurich Switzerland,
then bused three hours across the Austrian border
to Arlberg, St Anton. The 8.5-hour flight had no
baggage fees, served us wine, and gave us plenty to eat.
There was also an ample supply of new release movies
that you could view from your seat. A Mercedes coach
luxury bus transported us to our hotel in St. Anton.
We had 6-days of possible skiing while in St. Anton.
The first day Jack & Nancy Clark, Pam and I skied, we
found the terrain very challenging. Jack and I joined
the CMSC group of 16 for a day of thrills and spills.
The third day Jack and Nancy skied Lech, a neighboring
village, where a snowboarder plowed into Nancy
at top speed. The group was very sorry to learn that
she had a broken leg as a result of the impact, and required
surgery immediately.
I joined the CMSC group daily, with the legendary
Bill Gleason, who is a veteran St. Anton skier. Bill
could ski all day and tell anyone at dinner every trail
they skied, every lift they took, and the total elevation
they skied that day. My favorite day of skiing with
Bill took us through seven villages, and 22,000 ft. of
total elevation.
In addition to skiing, Pam and I took the high-speed
train to Innsbruck. This is truly the way to travel.
Smooth, quiet, fast (120 MPH), and comfortable. In
Innsbruck, we bought the unlimited hop on/ hope off
city pass, walked around old town, and visited the
Swarovski Crystal World.
On our side trip to Vienna, we stayed at the four star
Hotel DeFrance, which lived up to its rating. Very
nice rooms and excellent buffet breakfasts. The
weather was windy and cold, but the hop on/off bus
allowed us to visit palaces, the National Treasury, museums,
and old church catacomb with piles of ancient
bones. One of Pam‘s goals while in Vienna was to visit
the Freud Museum. (Go figure.) She and her therapist
friend Kathy reviewed artifacts, took photos, and
really enjoyed reading about Freud. In fact, the entire
trip was so good we hope to return to Europe next year
for another CMSC ski trip. Perhaps you will think
about joining us! Chris O.
Hi All!
As I write this our last Western Trip of
the season is out in Aspen, Co from
Feb 23-March 2 led by our own Cindy
Vondrasek as part of CMSC's Chicago
Week. I can't wait to hear from them on
how much fun they had! With Sue Finnis
and Teri Kinney planning the fun for
CMSC, it is sure to be a GREAT time!! Recently 22 Nomads
spent a week in South Lake Tahoe from Feb 6-
12. I made many new friends on this trip, including a
few new members Geary Horan, Renzo and Margaret
Vittorelli, and a potential new member befriended by our
group Steve from Alabama. I hope to see you all again
next year! A group of us rode in style to the airport and
took a limo. We all stayed at the Forest Inn & Suites at
Heavenly Village just a short walk from the Gondola.
There are many shops and restaurant/bars within walking
distance and for those of us who didn't mind cooking
a grocery store was only a little farther. Mike O'Rourke
did an excellent job of making sure all our bases were
covered!
Our festivities started a week before with a pre-trip party
at Beggar's Pizza in Oak Forest and then the fun continued
in Tahoe. We had a Wine & Cheese party on
Thursday followed by many Nomads meeting up at
McP's for dinner and drinks. A common theme throughout
the entire stay was gambling. Friday evening started
with a Pizza party and I'd like to extend a special thanks
to Pete Marus and Al Medina for helping Mike O'Rourke
get the party set up. Saturday some of us got together
for chili dinner courtesy of Sandy & Harry!! Sunday night
was our group dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe and then
we polished off the chili Monday night before our VERY
early departure Tuesday morning. As for the skiing...I
LOVED IT!! Saturday was the only day there were long
lift lines, but I missed those since I was in bed sick most
of the day. Heavenly is spread between California and
Nevada, it seemed like if the conditions weren’t good on
one side, they were much better on the other. Thursday
afternoon brought white out conditions which made skiing
a little difficult for awhile and on other days seemed a
little icy, but overall it was still a great place to ski and if
you moved off the main area could even find short lift
lines even on Saturday. I believe most people stayed at
Heavenly the entire week, but there were a few that took
the shuttle, rented a car, or rode with a friend to Kirkwood
or Northstar. From what I hear, Kirkwood has a lot
more difficult terrain, Ionly skied Heavenly. If you ever
head out to Heavenly I would highly recommend getting
the Epic Mix pass and a lesson. Several of us took lessons
and you definitely can't go wrong! The Epic Mix
pass tracks what lifts you took, vertical feet traveled, pictures
taken on hill by the Heavenly photographers, and
racing scores/medals, and its FREE! I just wish I got
mine early in the week! Overall, I think the trip was a
huge success! Now to start thinking about the trips for
next season… Amy
rides. Bicycling is great exercise and a fun
social adventure at the same time.
The first ride will depart from Yankee Woods
Forest Preserve Area located at 163 rd and Central in
Oak Forest on Sunday, April 21st at 10:30am. The
first pavilion on the right hand side is a good place to
meet to begin the ride. Bring a picnic lunch
and drinks for after the ride. We will have a great
time. As the summer progresses we will have bicycle
rides beginning from various locations: Willow
Springs Centennial Trial, Waterfall Glenn at
Argonne National Labs, etc.
The rides will begin at 10:30am. The dates for the
bicycle rides are as follows:
> Sunday, April 21 st -all around Yankee Woods
Tinley Creek Paved trail with picnic lunch
approximately 14 mile ride
> Sunday, May 19 th -Waterfall Glenn w/picnic lunch
Katherine w/picnic lunch
We can plan spontaneous rides throughout the
summer and join other bicycle groups on their
rides. Some of the group rides are the Apple Cider
Century, the Michigan Wine Country ride, and Taste
of Oak Lawn ride with the Bike Psychos, the Easter
ride with Folks on Spokes, and many more. The
Scarecrow Fest is October 13th if we wanted to ride
from Aurora to St. Charles.
Remember to wear comfortable clothing, bring
your drinks, and a bicycle helmet is a good idea,
There are many bicycle trails for us to ride and enjoy.
Maria Lynch
HELMETS PROTECT!!
Studies have concluded that helmets reduce the risk of a serious head injury by as much as
60%. But a surprising number of
safety experts and snowsport enthusiasts remain unconvinced that helmets reduce overall
injury risk.
So why do up to 40% of skiers and snowboarders still avoid helmets? The biggest reason,
is that many people never expect to fall. That attitude is especially common in people,
who are comfortable on blue runs but maybe not on blacks, and even more so in beginners.
Helmets are safe. They don't seem to increase risk taking. And they protect against serious,
even fatal head injuries.
Wear a helmet, it can’t hurt, it just might help! It’s a no
brainer!!!
