THANK YOU, MEMBERS, for your patience as the two by-laws the Board has approved for
revision reach your final approval. The changes may seem minor and inconsequential;
however, it is the duty of the Board to review inaccuracies or omissions in the by-laws and
attempt to correct them as needed. As things change and the club evolves, by-laws could
be revised annually, but that takes a lot of time to do it well. The Board does attempt to
address minor administrative changes through the Standing Rules of Order, which are
more easily adapted. To constantly adjust the by-laws takes away everyone’s limited time
from other important matters, such as planning and selling trips, getting social events
together, and just plain having fun. So bear with us on the administrivia.
IN REVIEW, the by-law change addressing the removal of a board member which was
proposed for the first time at the May 2012 General meeting passed in August 2012. The
following by-law will be read at the September 2012 General Meeting, which has been
changed to September13th (the 2 nd Thursday of the month) due to overbooking
at Gaelic Park. This will be the third and final reading prior to the vote by the
membership.
BY-LAW REVISION: Proposed Article 4 Section 2 E. (revisions underlined) The
Treasurer shall be responsible for all financial matters of the club, the expenditures of
monies, and the keeping of appropriate records, using generally accepted accounting
principles. The treasurer shall deposit all monies in the name of the club in such banks as
designated by the Board of Directors. All monies withdrawn shall contain at least two (2)
signatures, any two of the officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer.
Under no circumstances shall a reimbursement check be signed by the payee. The
Treasurer shall make a financial report to the Board of Directors at each monthly Board
Meeting the. Monthly the books are audited by the Vice-President, one Chairperson and
whenever possible a volunteer member. A full audit of the books shall be performed at
the end of the fiscal year and at that time the Treasurer shall furnish all books, papers,
vouchers, receipts, bills and invoices necessary for a proper auditing of its accounts.
(Delete: The Treasurer shall be bonded.)
As Labor Day approaches, we are reminded of the brevity of Chicago summers. I
hope you enjoy this last summer hurrah as we roll along happily towards ski season!
ATTENTION
LADIES
AND
GENTLEMEN
OF THE
NOMAD
SKI
CLUB!
I would like to propose
a nation wide
membership recruitment.
The only people receiving
this newsletter via email
are the 133 paid memberships.
Therefore, in order
for this club to grow we
need to look at the future
of this club. Recommend
the Nomads to various
people you know. Some
members are doing this,
bringing in family and
acquaintances. Ask yourself
how you got involved
with the Nomads? We are
coming out with this
season's brochure. I would
like each member to take a
brochure and a blank
membership application to
give to a person they think
would enjoy our ski club.
If this club is no longer a
growing club than one day
it will parish.
Nomad member, Evelyn
Vanek's sweet 97 year old
mother, Eleanor Potter,
peacefully made her
transition to Eternal Life
on August 1st, 2012.
Please keep Evelyn in your
thoughts and prayers.
HELLO ALL!
WE NEED YOU to sign up for Western trips! I realize it's hard to think snow with
warmer temps lingering around. However, keep in mind we have payment deadlines
to make and why not spread out the payments as long as possible versus having to
make larger payments later on?
ALL THAT BEING SAID, we have 3 great trips planned for those heading out west.
The first and always great trip is Rich Clausius' Family Trip to Copper Mountain in
Colorado! This is obviously a shorter trip than the others, but families or individuals
are encouraged to take advantage of the long Martin Luther King holiday weekend.
More information can be found in Rich's article.
THEN, WE HAVE Mike O'Rourke taking us to South Lake Tahoe where we're
staying within steps of the gondola taking us up to the beautiful views and snow
covered runs offered at Heavenly Ski Resort. In total Heavenly offers 4800 acres of
skiable terrain, making it the largest resort in California. The summit is the highest
in Lake Tahoe at 10,067 feet and it offers the longest vertical drop in California at
3,500 feet. Heavenly offers a total of 97 trails ranging from wide-open cruisers to
adrenaline charged 1600 foot chutes spread between California and Nevada.
Heavenly offers something for everybody! The skiers and boarders can enjoy a fun
filled day on the slopes or terrain parks or you can take part in a number of other
activities including sledding, snow bikes, snowshoeing, and tubing. However, if you
want more variety you can also take a shuttle to Kirkwood or Northstar at Tahoe for
additional slopes and fun!. Plus, for those who prefer not to ski/board (yes, they do
exist) just a short walk or ride over the border into Nevada will bring gambling and
a nightlife to keep you entertained. Join us in South Lake Tahoe to soak up the sun
and avoid the mid winter blues with a whopping average of 300 bluebird days a
year!
LASTLY, WE HAVE Cindy Vondrasek taking us to CMSC Chicago Week GOES
HOLLYWOOD at Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado. The CMSC trip leaders have been
working hard and have set up a wide range of activities to keep you busy all week!
Festivities tentatively include the following:
***Day of arrival, wine and cheese party for each club hosted by the lodging locations.
***Red Carpet Welcome Reception on Sunday evening....the night of the Oscars at the
Hotel Jerome in Aspen!
***Nastar Race---everyone gets a medal and Mountain Picnic at Snowmass on Monday
***Pub Crawl Monday evening in Aspen
***Tuesday, Après Ski Party in Snowmass at Sneaky's
***Wednesday, no CMSC events
***Thursday, Après Ski Party in Aspen at Cantina
***Friday, Red Carpet Farewell Party, come in your best Oscar winning outfit!
(***subject to change without notice)
YES, IF YOU HAVE looked into this trip in the past and thought I can't do it...think
again! Don't just look at the price tag. Look at the value of what you are getting.
CMSC puts together a fun filled week on top of great accommodations and 5 days
of skiing at Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, and/or Buttermilk.
Don't delay! Get in contact with any of the trip leaders or myself to get
yourself booked on any or all of these great trips!!
SKIING THE MIDWEST...CHRIS OLDANIE
Ski-A-Rama
kicked off another ski season with a good start. Even though participant
numbers didn’t reach the big numbers as in the hay-days, we did very well. Please
continue to give thought to which trips you intend to go on and sign up soon.
Dec 7-9 See Ski Brule’s trip leader Shirley Henderson for sign ups. Ski
Brule (The Beginners Trip) is only four short months away. The sooner you sign
up for a trip the longer you have to anticipate, plan for, and make preparatory
exercise part of your daily routine. In the past Shirley did wake-up yoga classes, I
cannot wait to see what this trip will bring…. No pressure Shirley, Ski Brule and
CMSC will have plenty of activities this weekend for sure.
Jan 11-13 The second Midwest trip will introduce a new place “Welsh
Village”, MN along with a very desired return to Afton Alps. A few years ago,
Cindy Flowers led a trip to Afton Alps. All who went said they wanted to return;
some drove back on their own and some waited for the Nomads to return. Patty Pfau
will lead this trip that has so much to offer -beautiful hotel in Historic Red Wing
with pool, hot tub, large breakfast, and a neighboring watering hole within walking
distance. Dinner will be at the St James Hotel, a nearby place that we will be
transported to by motor coach. While there, you could check out other legends
(besides the Nomads) that were there -- Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, Jessie James, Wild
Bill Cody… to name just a few of them. Legend has it that the hotel has ghost. Well,
you will just have to see that for yourself. So, there is so much more than just great
skiing.
Feb 16-17 The third Midwest trip of the year is not until February, but
trip leader; Darling Debbie Durkovic needs your signup early. This is an adult
only trip. Debbie is already planning on fun games for all. This will be the Nomads
maiden voyage to the North Star Mohican Casino, Resort. This resort is only three
years old and offers very reasonable but tasteful meal options. There is free nightly
entertainment plus $10 e-play per guest. Skiers can ski at Granite Peak on Sunday;
non-skiers could stay behind and sleep a little later and gamble a bit longer.
Don’t miss this Valentine’s weekend Nomad trip.
BIKING
& CAMPINGC
IN MICHIGAN
Hosted by Vida Burklow,
the South Haven, Michigan
bike and camping trip was
enjoyed by eight Nomads.
While some rode 29 miles
on the Kal-Haven trail,
others toured the town,
enjoying a fantastic
Farmers’ market and
visiting the quaint
boutique shops.
Bikers and shoppers
lunched at Captain Lou’s
while being entertained
with music, a view of the
drawbridge, and what
looked like a pirate ship
coming into port.
An evening campfire and
more food and libations
than any of us could
consume in a weekend
made for lively
conversation late into the
night. Rusty, the moose,
quietly stood guard over
us all.
FAMILY SKI TRIP...Rich Clausius
SKIER SAFETY
CODE
Is printed on virtually
every lift ticket and
posted in numerous
places around every ski
area, lists some of the
"inherent dangers
and risks of skiing,
including: changing
weather conditions;
existing and changing
snow conditions; bare
spots; rocks; stumps;
trees; collisions with
natural objects,
man-made objects, or
other skiers; variations
in terrain; and the
failure of skiers to ski
within their own
abilities." That's a
pretty fair assessment of
some of the dangers
you'll encounter while
skiing.
FLASH BACK ARTICLE AND SALE
Rich’s Tribulations & Words of Wisdom
End Procrastination NOW!
September 2003 (still a very timely article, worth repeating, thanks Rich)
Well believe it or not we’re already wrapping up the summer and moving into Fall, and like or not, the weather will be
come colder. Ski-a-Rama’s come and gone and the trips for next season are open and its time to decide were you're going.
All those places to consider. Do I ski out West, Midwest?
Decide we must! As with any trip, planning early and making payments sooner are beneficial to all. By signing up
for a trip now, you give the Nomad Board a better indication of trip interest and give them the opportunity to consider expanding
a trip if demands’ high, or reducing the trip spots without penalty if demand’s low . In addition, by planning now
you have the opportunity to ask for time off sooner, get on the trip you prefer, and have the maximum time frame to make
trip payments. This is a lot less stressful and simpler than coming up with $1000 + a month or so before a Western trip
departs, or $200 + before a Midwestern trip leaves.
Having been a trip leader and Board Member, I know of the countless frustration and second-guessing that Board
Members and Event Leaders go through due to the large number of Nomad procrastinators, which leave us guessing on
whether we’ve planned correctly for an event or trip. Never the less procrastinators are out there and they frustrate us all.
We see this at many Nomad Events and this is also why some of the Western Trips are setup for smaller groups so they'll fill
up quicker. So, please don’t be a procrastinator and wait till the last. Minute to sign up for a trip or event. The Nomad
Board has done an excellent job putting together trips and events of interest for Membership. So talk to your significant
other, friends, and family and pick out those trips and enjoy the Fall knowing come Winter you’ll be paid up and know exactly
when and where you’re going to do some of your best skiing and/or touring ever!
a trip by making a non-refundable trip deposit.
Non-refundable trip deposits are 10% of the trip price
seat on a trip will forfeit the non-refundable trip
deposit plus any fees or losses incurred on their behalf.
