It won’t be long before 36 Nomads jet off to Montana for the
MADAME PREZ SEZ...Pamela Castellanos
“SHOULD OLD ACQUAINTANCE BE FORGOT…?” As the old year rings out and the new one rings in, we can
answer that question with a resounding “NO!” Our 50th anniversary was evidence that Nomads stay connected across
the decades. It was a time for renewing acquaintances and friendships and remembering who we have been and where
we have been. The video from the 50 th was viewed again, thanks to Debbie Durkovic, at the Christmas party, so we
were reminded of how we looked and what we wore over the years. Thanks to Pam Bremer for organizing a great
holiday get together, and collecting gifts for children and veterans. You were all very generous!
SOME FAMILIAR FACES will no longer grace us. We sadly bid farewell to several Nomad who passed away this
year, including current members, Ralph Thelan, Don Durkovic, Mike Vondrasek, Lucy Lanz, and Mehlin Smith. They
made us a better club, as they lead, taught, represented, danced, laughed, and, oh, yes, skied with us. They enriched our
lives by being wonderful friends to countless members. We miss them all.
BUT MANY, many of our old (and new) acquaintances and friends are still in the club, contributing, entertaining,
skiing and just hanging out with us. Our December trip to Marquette provided plenty of opportunity to get the ski
season off to a great start. Mike Radice, our trip leader, and Mike Habschmidt, Midwest Ski Director planned an
event-filled weekend that began with a tailgate lunch in the parking lot, and morphed into a Renaissance bash on the
bus. Fortunately, we had several beer wenches who served up drinks and a lot of attitude. (Thank you Heather, Bonnie,
Barb, and Shirley, you saucy wenches!) Cindy V. and Debbie D. made sure the wine, cheese, and song continued into
the pool area post skiing the next day. We were delighted to have a couple new members, Chris and Nick, who
represented the twenty -something generation of boarders with enthusiasm and humor. There were two lunches on the
hill, and a comedy show and dancing in the evening. The stand-up comic dubbed Mike R. a Renaissance Super Hero,
which wasn’t too far off the mark. His costume is being saved for posterity or, alternatively, for whoever wants it.
Monk, or Mike H. won best costume. Kudos to Chuck our bus driver for making it safely home from Marquette in
record time, 6 hours and 45 minutes, including a dinner stop!
IF YOU ARE THINKING of going on another Midwest trip, Shanty Creek is still open, so please sign up
soon for this Valentine’s weekend trip. It is only about a five and a half hour bus ride and has plenty of perks,
as trip leader Mike Whicher and Mike Habschmidt can tell you. Ski in-ski out is a great benefit for those of us
who like to begin and end the day on our own terms. Don’t delay on this one!
ALTHOUGH WE MISS THOSE who are no longer with the club for whatever the reasons may be, the Nomads
remain strong in spirit and friendship. So begin the year by letting your friends know that they are appreciated, and
help the club grow in numbers. Friends don’t let friends miss out on a great club like this one!
Happy New Year ya’ all,
So it’s a new year, hope it’s a better one!! Seems they usually are not, maybe its all the hype and
expectations. Who knows...what I do know is, things don’t change much really, trying to live up to those resolutions we
vow we will never make again, now we just kinda keep them to ourselves, or maybe that’s just me, just incase we can’t
live up to them, and we usually can’t...life...enough about that.
First ski trip went well, from what I have heard, the first Western will be going soon, I bet it will
be just as great! Can’t wait to see pictures and hopefully a trip review (not from the trip leader),
“everyone have a safe and fun trip”!
I HOPE EVERYONE HAD A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS
AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR. HERE’S TO A GREAT 2012.
Our deepest sympathies to Nancy and Jack Clarke on the death of
Nancy’s Dad. Please keep Nancy, Jack and their family in your
thoughts and prayers.
Our sympathies also to Barb and Lee Renolds on the loss of Barb’s
Dave Barski, past Nomad and board member, passed away Dec.
WHAT A GREAT TIME THE BEGINNER’S TRIP WAS. Although I didn’t
ski, I did get some shopping in with Cindy V and Barb. And we did
go to the mountain for the on-hill lunch on Sunday. It’s been a while
since I’ve done a Midwest trip and this was just as great as I remember.
Sandy Lake is going to tell you all about in her article. Thanks
to Mike & Mike for such a great time. Don’t forget there are two
more Midwest Trips, so if you haven’t signed up, please do so soon!
P.S. Cindy V and I did not, I repeat, DID NOT, remove the door
handle from Mike & Mike’s room. I have to admit though, it was
pretty funny and hats off to the person or persons who pulled it off.
THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY WAS AS ALWAYS, A GREAT TIME. It’s
always nice to see so many Nomads come to the party with their
gifts for Toys for Tots and the Manteno Veteran’s Home.
If you are interested in purchasing a copy of the DVD created for
the 50 th Anniversary, please let me know. We have them available
for the low price of $5.
My New Year’s resolution is going to be to get my article to Janet
on time every month. I’m hoping that by putting it in print, I may
be able to keep it. (oh don’t be silly, your one of the few who does get it to me
on time! jk)
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...LEE MARCHESCHI
THE TRIPS OUT WEST are about to start which means we’ll be skiing at higher altitudes and needing more
skin protection . There is a difference between, suntan lotion, sunscreen and sunblock.
?? Suntan Lotion while it protects from the sun, will allow the sun to tan you and minimize the possibility of a
burn.
?? Sunscreen will give you more skin protection from the sun’s rays.
?? Sunblock will give you the most protection. It should be used if you tend to burn easily.
While they all give skin protection, use your own judgment on which one to use. They all have SPF numbers
which lets you know how well they protect. The higher the number, the longer the protection.
You should put the skin protection on at least twenty minutes before going out, and repeat every couple of hours!
For Your Health & Safety...Patty Pfau
Chile Peppers ~ May help: Boost metabolism.
Chile peppers add a much-appreciated heat to chilly
weather dishes, and they can also give a boost to your
metabolism. Thank capsaicin, the compound that gives fresh chilies, and spices including
cayenne and chipotle, their kick. Studies show that capsaicin can increase the body's metabolic rate (causing one to
burn more calories) and may stimulate brain chemicals that help us feel less hungry.
Ginger ~ May help: Soothe an upset stomach, fight arthritis pain.
Ginger has a well-deserved reputation for relieving an unsettled stomach. Studies show ginger extracts can help
educe nausea caused by morning sickness or following surgery or chemotherapy. Ginger is packed with inflammationfighting
compounds, such as gingerols, some believe may help in fighting some cancers and may reduce the aches of
osteoarthritis and soothe sore muscles.
Cinnamon ~ May help: Stabilize blood sugar.
A few studies suggest that adding cinnamon to food, up to a teaspoon a day, usually given in capsule form,
might help people with type 2 diabetes better control their blood sugar, by lowering post-meal
blood-sugar spikes.
Parsley ~ May help: Inhibit breast cancer-cell growth.
University of Missouri scientists found that this herb can actually inhibit breast cancer-cell growth. In the
study, animals that were given apigenin, a compound abundant in parsley (and in celery), boosted their
resistance to developing cancerous tumors. Experts recommend adding a couple pinches of minced fresh
parsley to your dishes daily.
Sage ~ May help: Preserve memory, soothe sore throats.
Herbalists recommend sipping sage tea for upset stomachs and sore throats, a remedy supported by one study that
found spraying sore throats with a sage solution gave effective pain relief. And preliminary research suggests the herb
may improve some symptoms of early Alzheimer's.
Rosemary ~ May help: Enhance mental focus, fight foodborne bacteria.
One recent study found that people performed better on memory and alertness tests when mists of aromatic
rosemary oil were piped into their study cubicles. Rosemary is often used in marinades for meats and poultry,
the herb fights bacteria and prevents meat from spoiling, and may even make cooked meats healthier. Adding
rosemary extracts to ground beef helps prevent the cancer-causing compounds produced when meats are grilled,
broiled or fried.
MIDWESTS TRIPS...MIKE HABSCHMIT
Hello Nomads!!
I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a happy Holiday Season! Even though the Chicagoland area hasn't had much snow
this year, we'll be having fun skiing the slopes in Michigan and Wisconsin, escaping the miserable cold, wet weather of Chicago!
Our last trip was a blast! The beginner's trip went really well! It's too bad some of you weren't able to make it, but you can
make it up this February!
Looking for something fun & romantic to do on Valentine’s Day Weekend? Something breathtaking and exciting? Then
join the Chicago Nomads on February 10 - 12th for a weekend of skiing on the slopes of the Shanty Creek Resorts
near beautiful Traverse City, Michigan! You will stay at a hotel right there at the resort, which offers two ski hills, best part is
you can practically ski in and out of your hotel room! There will be a gourmet dinner served that Saturday night, alongside a great
nightlife and romantic dancing. Both mornings there will be a delicious breakfast buffet at the hotel, with omelet station! And then,
that Saturday afternoon, we will have a lovely Wine & Cheese party at the hotel’s hot tub, perfect for sharing with your friends and
relaxing with a cold one, and getting to know your new ski buddies. And what’s the price for such an extravagant, fun-filled, romantic
weekend? Only $300, that’s right, only $300, which will include the deluxe bus ride, your room, one dinner, two breakfasts, ski lift
tickets, and the wine and cheese party! Our luxury coach bus will leave that Friday at the Standard Bank Thunderbolts Stadium at
14011Kenton, Crestwood. You should arrive there at 1:00pm, and the bus will leave at2:00pm. Contact Mike Whicher at
visit our website at chicagonomads.com!
February 24 - 26th we will be visiting the beautiful slopes of Granite Peak, Wisconsin, where they have over 70
ski runs, with over 700 feet of vertical drop! We will be staying at the Best Western nearby, the closest hotel to the ski areas, and
while we’re there, we will be served a tantalizing Prime Rib dinner! They have a giant pool to relax in between ski runs, and a hot tub
where we will be enjoying a Wine& Cheese party Saturday afternoon. The North Star Casino is nearby, and we’re currently working
to reserve a shuttle there Saturday night, for a little extra fun and excitement for the weekend. And the price for such danger and
excitement? $295. That’s all. And that includes the deluxe bus ride, your room, a Prime Rib dinner, two breakfasts, ski lift tickets for
the weekend, and memories that will leave your heart racing! Our luxury coach bus will leave that Friday at the Standard Bank
MARQUETTE MOUNTAIN...FIRST MIDWEST TRIP
IF YOU DIDN’T GO ON THE BEGINNER’S TRIP TO MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN, you missed a great time!
Our trip leader, Mike Radice, treated 30 Nomads in royal fashion with a grand tailgate party and fun &
games on the speedy bus trip to the U.P. & back (thanks Chuck). Hotel and mountain staff couldn’t
have been nicer. They went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. Check out the pictures online
of the many creative costumes from this Renaissance weekend.
A Saturday of chilly skiing made the hot tub and pool so inviting. The fun-packed weekend included
Saturday’s wine & cheese party, comedy show followed by music and dancing. We were lucky to have
four new members on this trip. All are great additions to the club and a riot to be around!
This all-around great trip was a nice way to begin a
new ski season.
