Dear Friends,
To paraphrase from Lewis Carroll’s
� e Adventures of Alice in Wonderland:
If you don’t know where you’re going, any
road will take you there. Together with our
Board of Directors, staff , volunteers and
community leaders, we spent much of the
past year defi ning where we want to go,
then defi ning how we should get there.
� e Bok Tower Gardens Master Plan, a vision
for the next 25 years, was the result. From
this roadmap, we began to chart our course
by preparing for a long but exciting journey
ahead.
Th e Gardens continued to enjoy another
exceptional year of bloom while our
3
visitor off erings, conservation work and
our reputation throughout the state
fl ourished. We received numerous state and
national awards in 2011 that recognized
our collective eff orts to make Bok Tower
Gardens a world-class garden. We ended
last year at a 10-year attendance high with
nearly 150,000 visitors.

Th anks to the dedication
of our horticulture and
conservation staff , the
gardens and grounds
continued to thrive, earning
Bok Tower Gardens the
prestigious 2011 Award
for Garden Excellence by
Horticulture Magazine.
Horticulture
We had a mild winter with only a few
freezing days in December contributing
to a robust spring bloom. Our Tillandsia
display in the Visitor Center was augmented
with new and exotic varieties, and the
hanging plant “wall” bloomed again as the
plants doubled in size. We also introduced
a greater variety of water plantings this past
summer, including a spectacular display of
fi ve-foot Victoria water lilies.
Garden Projects
Irrigation is central to our well-being
and one requiring constant diligence to
maintain. One of our two primary well
pumps had to be pulled this year and is in
the process of being refurbished. A highwind
storm that swept through the Gardens
in March caused light damage to the
greenhouse and the Visitor Center’s River of
Stone, reminding us of the capriciousness of
Florida weather. Th e horticulture staff made
good headway on clearing, re-planting and
lawn maintenance throughout the Gardens.
Preserve Lands
A hot, dry summer contributed to a
one-acre wildfi re on the Preserve during a
scheduled clearing of the adjacent groves
due to citrus greening. Other Preserve lands
were abuzz with activity. A gift of pebble
rock from Mosaic helped us lay a new trail
along our entrance road through the Florida
Community Trust lands. Th e longleaf pine
restoration continued with another nine
acres planted in December. And thanks to

more than 90 volunteers, Ridge Rangers
and RSS Field Services crew who braved
two weeks of August heat, our Conservation
team was able to plant 33,000 grasses and
wildfl owers on the Pine Ridge Preserve to
complete a sandhill restoration project.
Tower & Carillon
An August storm damaged one of the
herons atop the Singing Tower but
fortunately the damage was minor and is
slated for repair in summer of 2012. As part
of this repair we will make improvements
to the Tower lightning protection to help
mitigate future damage. After completing
Phase IV of tile grille restoration work, we
paused to assess the work done to date while
developing next steps for Phase V.

Carillon CARILLON Services
SERVICES
During his fi nal season as director of
Carillon Services, William De Turk
performed a number of special concerts
including a “Tribute to Ken Morrison”
program in honor of our former Gardens’
director. Librarian Joy Banks had a busy fi rst
year assessing the state of our archives and
library while developing a strategic plan for
our collections. We received a signifi cant

donation of unpublished manuscripts from
the estate of composer John Courter. A
generous gift by composer Roy Hamlin
Johnson enabled us to produce a carillon
recording of his works performed by
Milford Myhre. And, as the year closed,
we began planning for the return of the
International Carillon Festival in 2012.

Conservation
CONSERVATION
We believe our conservation
team are champions, but
this year the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service made it
offi cial. In February 2011
our Rare Plant Conservation
Program received the Rare
Species Recovery Champion
award that recognized their
leadership and innovation
in rare plant recovery, in
particular for their work to
conserve 38 imperiled plant
species.
Population monitoring
In addition to performing counts and
mapping, we collected survival or
demographic data for 37 rare plant
populations of eight species throughout
Central Florida.
Hybridization trials
Hand-crossing of individuals were
performed to look at hybridization levels
between eight species and three genera.
Population introductions
We introduced 2,206 propagated seedlings
and 2,446 seeds of three species into eight
protected sites to establish new rare plant
populations on public lands.

Center for Plant
Conservation –
National Collection
We brought in hundreds of thousands
of seeds from 18 species from 48 sites
throughout Florida for preservation into the
National Collection.
Networking and Outreach
Th e Rare Plant Task Force, an annual
statewide meeting of conservation
professionals, was held in spring 2011 at
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. We
organized this annual meeting along with
Fairchild ecologists. Our staff provided
16 tours of the facilities to more than 200
people, manned educational displays at
three venues, prepared nine lay articles,
led two educational workshops, gave
presentations to 14 groups, and provided
expertise and support to graduate and
undergraduate students at two universities.

The Visitor Experience
THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE
Attendance increased in
2011 as 147,934 visitors
passed through our gates.
Membership increased to
4,762 households. New
technologies enabled us to
sell more online tickets,
administer surveys, showcase
the Gardens in new and
in-depth ways and build
a virtual community of
Friends. Th e summer
renovation of the Garden
Activities Center, renamed
the Olmsted House,
coincided with the unveiling
of a new rental business plan
for the Gardens.

Pinewood Estate
Pinewood continued to show strong
visitation thanks to the 2010 introduction
of self-guided tours. We focused this year
on historical interpretation and converted
Bedroom 3 into an exhibit that tells the
story of the life and times of the original
residents in the 1930s. By September we
were poised to hire a coordinator with
curatorial experience to help us maximize
Pinewood’s fullest potential as a property
listed on the National Register of Historic
Places.
Facility Rentals
Working on the Master Plan had us
re-imagining the future possibilities for
event rentals in our Gardens. To that end
we began developing a strategic business
plan and renovated the Garden Activities
Center over the summer, and re-naming it
the Olmsted House. We enjoyed another
successful year with 200 paid and in-kind
rentals, from weddings to corporate events,
in addition to numerous bookings for
special event portraits and photography.

Communications
Our vision of being one of America’s
fi nest gardens caught the attention of
media throughout the world. We hosted
international journalists who blogged,
tweeted and posted rave reviews on
Facebook. National newspaper features
syndicated by the Washington Post, major
editorial coverage including AAA magazines
and a 2011 TripAdvisor Certifi cate of
Excellence award helped get the word out.
Our Garden Path newsletter garnered several
awards and was a fi nalist in the national
American Advertising Federation ADDY
awards competition. New cutting edge
technologies kept us on in the public eye
through micro websites, HD video and
360-degree photography. Online ticket sales
and daily deals such as Groupon increased
revenue and helped us capture valuable
information about our visitors. Our tourism
partnership with LEGOLAND Florida
led to the creation of an eight-foot Singing
Tower LEGO replica in their new park. We

increased our media partnerships and were
honored to see our second annual WMNF
Edward Bok Youth Peace Awards winner
enter Mount Holyoke College.
Retail Services
Visitors and members contributed to
strong sales in the Café and Gift Shop.
We expanded our online retail store,
developed new lines of Bok Tower Gardens
merchandise and were prepared, by the end
of the year, to hire our fi rst professional chef
to help take the Blue Palmetto Café to the
next level.

Events & Exhibits
EVENTS & EXHIBITS
Music & Art
Carillon concerts, symphonic performances,
Live at the Gardens concerts in the Visitor
Center and Music at Pinewood carried our
mission of music to every corner of the
Gardens. A rich variety of art exhibits by
Florida artists provided year-round interest
in the Visitor Center.

Special Events
In its second year, the admission-free
Boktoberfest Plant Sale attracted a record
8,100 people to the Gardens. Christmas at
Pinewood showcased “Christmas Memories”
with 7,449 visitors, while we built in
value-added activities surrounding National
Public Gardens Day, Mother’s Day, a 9/11
Remembrance, and other occasions and
milestones throughout the year.

Education EDUCATION & PROGRAMS Programs
Our new Grow Outside initiative took
shape as our education coordinator began
to introduce a number of creative and
engaging youth programs this year. Our
Tools for Teachers curriculum guide turned
the Gardens into a living classroom. By
year’s end we chose to become a satellite
partner of the Fairchild Challenge, an
award-winning program founded by the
10
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. And we
kept the Gardens lively in the off -season
months with innovative programs like
Discovery Days, Bark Tower Gardens Dog Day
of Summer, a Summer Film Series and a Kids
Photography Contest.
