Award for Excellence
Kay S. Clark
Assistant Director of Admissions, James E. Rogers College of Law
Nominated by Terry Sue Holpert
K
ay Clark has proven herself a University
ambassador of the highest caliber.
Students, faculty and staff benefit daily from
her extraordinary skills, care for others and
determination to get things done.
Kay’s outstanding service to others,
however, is best illustrated by her response
to the Hurricane Katrina disaster. When the
hurricane hit, law students from Tulane and
Loyola began calling the University, desperate
to salvage their fall semesters. Although she
faced an extremely difficult situation, Kay
threw herself into finding a solution.
Within a day of receiving the first phone calls,
Kay had represented the Admissions Office at
an emergency meeting of the college, where
the group decided to join the nationwide effort
to accommodate the displaced students. She
then single-handedly spoke with victims,
developed criteria for selecting among the
candidates, reviewed resumes and applications
and provided comfort to people whose lives
had been devastated. Working throughout the
entire weekend, she admitted eight Tulane law
students.
Once the students arrived, she led the effort to
find them housing, furniture, appliances, and
personal items. Throughout the fall semester,
she remained a source of guidance, support,
and stability for these students.
In a letter of recommendation, one of the
students wrote, “I will never forget how Ms.
Clark met me that Labor Day morning with a
hug and a smile. It is difficult to describe how
much of a relief it was to be accepted into a
place with such warmth and kindness in the
midst of such seeming chaos and loss.”

Award for Excellence
Joseph “Ike” Dent
Chief Broadcast Engineer, UA South
Nominated by Lorraine DeNigris
J
oseph “Ike” Dent is an advocate for
change. Luckily for the UA, he also is
committed to the University’s expansion
in Southern Arizona.
Ike has been instrumental in the development
and success of UA South, where he trains and
assists faculty and staff on the use of classroom
technology and aids in planning projects such
as the Patterson Observatory and the Early
Learning Center. Ike is also responsible for
bringing the CatCard system to UA South,
enabling students to take advantage of its
benefits, and connect with services.
Ike acts as the advisor for ASUA South, which
under his guidance has developed into an
important part of campus life. He recently
dedicated a great deal of time to planning UA
South’s first back-to-school event in which
ASUA provided refreshments, music and raffles
for students, with student government officers
participating in new student orientations. A
colleague wrote, “Ike goes above and beyond
his duties and responsibilities as their advisor,
encouraging and supporting the students in
their pursuit of making UA South an enjoyable
place as they pursue their University of Arizona
degrees.”
In addition to his responsibilities on the south
campus, Ike also spends many additional hours
traveling to assist employees and faculty in
Sierra Vista, Douglas, the Vail School District,
and at Pima Community College’s East
Campus.
Ike’s commitment to the UA shows in the time,
energy and enthusiasm he devotes to his job.
As a single individual, Ike has significantly
contributed to The University of Arizona’s
mission of serving greater Southern Arizona.

Award for Excellence
Rafaela Farney
Administrative Assistant, German Studies
Nominated by Albrecht Classen
R
afaela has been called “the heart and
soul” of the Department of German
Studies.
Serving as the administrative assistant for the
department for the past eight years, Rafaela’s
responsibilities include handling student
files and paper work, organizing textbook
orders, coordinating classroom scheduling,
and providing assistance to the department
head, undergraduate and graduate advisors.
According to one letter of nomination, she
performs all of these roles “with an outgoing
friendliness and willingness to help that is
truly contagious.”
writes cards for special occasions, and
organizes winter holiday gift exchanges
each year. She also participates in various
departmental events and helps with many
charitable organizations.
“I consider our department exceedingly lucky
for having Ms. Farney working for us,” wrote
her nominator. “Without her, our atmosphere,
our identity, and our collegiality simply would
be different. In other words, she has deeply
impacted all of our professional lives ever since
she came on board.”
Rafaela also works to create a sense of
community within her department, making
the office a positive environment for students,
professors and staff members. She places
chocolates in mailboxes on special holidays,

Award for Excellence
Anne Marie Jones
Senior Program Coordinator, Vice Provost for Instruction,
Office of Academic Affairs
Nominated by Jerrold E. Hogle
A
nne Marie Jones makes juggling look
easy.
When Anne became the senior program
coordinator for the Vice Provost for
Instruction, she assumed the responsibility of
three positions – executive secretary, operative
coordinator of general education, and fund
accountant for all units reporting to the VPI.
Despite such a complex job description,
Anne executes her duties impressively. “She
has done continuously extraordinary, as well
as extensive, work, often above and beyond
simply meritorious performance,” wrote her
nominator.
In addition to carrying the burden of three
significant roles, Anne also volunteers for
special projects of University-wide importance.
For example, she recently redesigned all levels
of the University’s central budget for academic
advising.
Through countless hours spent looking
through records, contacting colleges
and departments to verify employment
assignments and investigating inconsistencies
in record-keeping, Anne was successful in
identifying the amount of permanent funding
still needed to fulfill the $1.625 million
commitment made by President Likins to
support academic advising. Anne’s report
provided the data necessary to make a request
to the University’s finance committee.
Anne’s dedication to serving the University
shines through in her strong work ethic and
willingness to assume responsibility.

Award for Excellence
Andrea E. Lee
Administrative Associate, Financial Services Administration
Nominated by Linda Gee
T
o say that Andrea takes initiative is an
understatement.
Andrea began working at The University of
Arizona Financial Services Office in March
1996 as a student worker. Since graduation, she
was hired as a full-time employee, earning her
master’s degree in educational leadership via
night and weekend classes at the UA.
In her years with the Financial Services Office,
Andrea has served many different roles,
tackling each with hard work and enthusiasm.
As a member of the Nonresident Alien Tax and
Reporting Team, Andrea had the responsibility
of helping organize a method of presenting
and explaining the many different tax treaties
available to non-residents attending the
University. Instead of making students come
to her with questions, she coordinated with
the International Students Office to take
part in their Non-resident Alien Orientation
each semester. As her nominator wrote,
“She prepared Power Point presentations for
the students, created brochures containing
valuable information to explain the process
of filling out required tax forms and made
time for each of the attendees to explain very
detailed information.”
This is just one example of Andrea’s
willingness to go the extra mile. Described
by colleagues as “positive,” “professional,”
“energetic,” “knowledgeable,” and a “team
player,” it is clear that Andrea is deserving of
this honor.

Award for Excellence
K
Glory A. Novak
eeping up with Glory Novak is no small
task.
Described as energetic, reliable, organized,
detailed, broad minded, compassionate and
community-oriented, Glory is above all
recognized by co-workers as someone willing
to go the extra mile.
Director of Human Resources Finance and Administration
Nominated by Allison Vaillancourt
in Barrio Hollywood with maintenance and
repair, her role proved invaluable.
Glory was instrumental in recruiting skilled
crew leaders from Facilities Management,
soliciting donations for thousands of dollars of
necessary supplies, organizing volunteers and
planning of many other aspects of the project.
Glory’s knowledge of the University and its
operations is extensive. A colleague wrote in a
letter of recommendation, “If she doesn’t know
the answer (which is rare), she always knows
who to call and knows their phone number by
heart.”
In addition to serving the University
community, Glory is focused upon serving
the greater Tucson area. Glory has co-chaired
the UA Day of Caring Project for the past
two years. In October 2004, when the project
involved helping low-income homeowners
A colleague wrote, “Often we would meet
during our lunch hour to work on the project
and I would see Glory balancing papers and
notes on her knee, talking on the phone, e-
mailing, talking to me and eating her lunch
all at the same time. The more the project
heated up, the happier she seemed to be. She
single-handedly coordinated all of the material
logistics for the day.”
Glory is a shining example of the University’s
commitment to service both on campus and
within the greater community.

Award for Excellence
D
Maria G. Perez
Custodian, Custodial Services
Nominated by Lisa Garcia
edicated, thorough, trustworthy and
cheerful, Maria Perez defines the ideal
employee.
A custodian in the Sarver Heart Center
building, Maria takes pride in her work,
putting in long hours and regularly exceeding
the needs and expectations of staff. As one
recommender wrote, “She frequently performs
duties that are beyond the scope of her job
description. It’s not unusual for me to come in
and find a note from Maria on my desk, letting
me know about a potential problem in the
building or that she has found a ‘lost’ item. It is
quite reassuring to have the confidence in the
custodial staff that we have in Maria.”
Maria is described as the kind of worker
who works “quietly behind the scenes,”
making everyone’s lives easier and ensuring
that the center always looks its best. She
never complains about extra duties, and she
willingly fills in for others who are unable to
come to work.
Maria is clearly the type of employee that the
University should value most highly. She is
well-deserving of this award.

risk management expertise for various
departments.
The Steward Observatory Mirror Lab has
benefited from this program, which has
assigned a series of student interns to work
on the laboratory’s complex health and safety
issues.
“The Mirror Lab has implemented many
significant safety improvements, arising
directly from the work of interns, which have
worked under direct guidance from Julia
Rosen,” wrote colleagues. “Julia was absolutely
instrumental in creating this program and
making it a wonderful success story.”
In addition to her responsibilities as a student
mentor and internship coordinator, Julia
lectures in environmental and occupational
health courses and leads safety and health
programs that require across-campus
partnerships.
“Julia does far more than show up for work,”
wrote a nominator. “Julia exemplifies what
working at a university is about. She educates
students and workers while providing a quality
During these projects, Tim typically spends
fixing things himself during nights, weekends,
has become an esteemed figure in the Financial
She has worked with payroll for the past 21
years, regularly coordinating a number of large
team projects. Recently, many of these projects
have involved bringing Financial Services into
the 21st century, converting office operations
from paper forms to online processes. For
instance, Jenny was instrumental in converting
the Previous Unreported Time Report (PUTR)
Request system (POPR), the Time Roster
Worksheet to the Online Time Roster system,
In her day-to-day activities, Jenny strives to
create positive relationships with the greater
very approachable and always greets us with
a smile when we come to her office. She does
whatever it takes to resolve issues or answer
any questions regardless of their complexity.
Award for Excellence
Richard J. Wagner
Radiation Control Specialist, Radiation Control Office
Nominated by Keith Carsten
F
rom the moment he began working at
the Radiation Control Office, Richard
Wagner made quite an impression on
his co-workers.
Wrote a colleague, “During the interview
process, three things immediately struck
me about Rich – his leadership skills, his
enthusiasm, and his incredible “can do”
attitude. Nothing in the years since his hiring
has tempered my opinion.”
As a radiation control specialist, Rich
has worked in virtually every facet of the
University’s Radiation Safety Program in the
past 10 years. In that time, his competence,
energy, and problem-solving skills have
benefited numerous departments.
“Many principal investigators tend not
to think of compliance departments as
providing a service, but rather a hindrance or
an annoyance,” wrote his nominator. “Rich
receives letters and e-mails of thanks from
principal investigators who use radioactive
material, and they actually say ‘thanks for
making my life easier.’”
In addition to monitoring the use of
radioactive material, he also excels as an
instructor, training hundreds of students,
faculty, and staff. He also audits faculty
radiation research approvals, provides support
in the management of radioactive wastes, and
serves as secretary to the University Radiation
Safety Committee.
A colleague wrote, “Overall, in my decade
contributions to the RCO and University,
three words consistently come to mind
– exceptional, exemplary, and extraordinary.”

preparing monkeys for surgical procedures,
maintaining the inventory of research supplies,
coordinating the safety of lab personnel, acting
as a liaison with UA veterinarians, and training
students to work within the laboratory setting.
Described by a nominator as “the first to
volunteer to come back to work at night or
early the next morning,” Prisca’s commitment
to her profession is noteworthy. When the
laboratory prepares for conferences, Prisca
volunteers to take computers home to
continue working on data analysis. She also
voluntarily administers anesthesia and surgical
assistance for all monkeys used in research
at the University. Furthermore, Prisca has
been instrumental to the success of students
working in the laboratory, personally leading
their training, filling in when they are sick or
have to prepare for exams, and helping prepare
them to interview for medical and veterinary
schools.
“Her generosity and team spirit is best
illustrated by the following anecdote. When
she passed the probationary period, I gave her
a small salary raise. When she learned about
it, she asked me to give this raise to one of the
students instead,” wrote a nominator.
Prisca truly defines the idea of going “above
and beyond,” and her dedication and
generosity are surpassed only by the esteem of
her colleagues.

wrote a physics professor. “However, I can
say without reservation that the multitude
T
he Department of Psychology serves
approximately 1,800 undergraduate
psychology majors each year.
Though the Psychology Advising Team
consists of only five individuals, it meets this
challenge head on, providing students with
accurate, complete and timely information
regarding their academic program.
In addition to providing quality student
advising, the Psychology Advising Team has
created a number of programs to meet student
needs. For example, the team designed a course
to prepare undergraduate students for graduate
school, which focuses on opportunities
available within the field of psychology,
graduate school admissions criteria, graduate
school applications and preparation for
graduate entrance exams.
The Advising Team also created Promoting
Academic Success for Students (PASS), a
program that uses trained mentors to assist
freshmen on academic probation.
The team also has developed other ways to
enhance services to students. For instance,
they created a monthly online newsletter
that provides information and opportunities
within the department community, as well as
an internship program to allow students to
earn credit for hands-on-experience related to
psychology with a community organization.
With a wide array of services that extend far
beyond basic academic advising, it is clear that
the Psychology Advising Team strives to guide
students through the college process every step
of the way.

The Department of Chemistry has become a model of
excellence for other academic departments. This may have
something to do with its mission statement, which is taken
quite seriously.
According to its mission statement, the Chemistry
Department aims to provide the highest quality of chemistry
education, to advance the science of chemistry and to provide
information, service and guidance to the community in areas
requiring an understanding of chemistry.
To meet these objectives, the department’s staff is divided
into three groups, each sets its own goals based upon the
greater departmental mission. Staff in each department
engage in peer review, conduct self-evaluation, undergo

in-depth annual review
and analyze yearly
accomplishments.
Departmental Award for Excellence continued
The department has found
that this complex process of
expectations and evaluations
ensures that all staff members
are working to their highest
potential.
It also has helps ensure a more
motivated work force. From
January to September 2005,
for example, chemistry staff
participated in 810 hours of
training – an average of 12
hours per person.
The department also is
dedicated to diversity, sporting
the highest percentage of
female professors of all
chemistry departments across
the nation, and the highest
percentage of Hispanic faculty
among the College of Science.
The Chemistry Department’s
commitment to its mission,
to diversity and to its staff
has rendered it a beacon of
excellence for the University.
Billy Joe Varney Award
Utter the name “Billy Joe” and
almost anyone who has been at the
University of Arizona any length
of time, as well as any long-term Tucsonan,
recognizes that you’re referring to Bill Varney,
the UA associate vice president emeritus for
planning and budgeting.
During his 30 years here, the one-time director
of the Student Union became an irreplaceable
fixture by virtue of his dedication not only
to the goals of the UA, but also to the needs
of hundreds of students, faculty and staff.
Billy Joe did not just
come in contact with
people — he accosted
them, as he does even
now, with a bear hug, a
bellowed greeting, and
the kind recognition and
warmth that made each
individual know that he
or she really amounted
to something.
For that, as well as for
countless outstanding
accomplishments in
his professional and
volunteer life, both at
Past Winners
the UA and the Tucson community, the Staff
Advisory Council presented an award to
Varney at his retirement in 1988. It is an honor
that, henceforth, would bear his name.
As established those 18 years ago, the Billy
Joe Varney Award for Excellence annually
recognizes a University employee for a career
of at least 15 years of dedicated service to
the institution, to its employees and to the
community of Tucson. In other words, the
award recognizes someone who lives and acts
in the spirit of Billy Joe Varney.
Billy Joe Varney Award
W
Darci A. Thompson
Director, Life & Work Connections
Nominated by David L. Swihart
hen Darci looks around, she sees the
bigger picture.
Currently in her 15th year at the UA, Darci
uses her skills to consistently improve a
number of programs serving students and
faculty. By using what colleagues call “future
scanning” – looking at international, national,
state, and local trends to analyze their impact
from a healthcare perspective – she maintains
one of the nation’s premier wellness programs.
As a colleague noted, “In the mid to late
1990s, for example, she developed and added
the dependent care and work/life support
programs to LWC, not only because they are
convenient for employees, but also because she
saw the approaching problem of recruitment
and retention long before many of her peers.”
Darci’s quest for foresight and understanding
stems from a deep concern for the well being
of UA students and employees. As a result,
she makes sure that wellness screenings occur
regularly in different departments around
the UA campus and in Southern Arizona,
partnering with Campus Health and other
University divisions.
Darci also takes time to meet the needs of
individuals. In the aftermath of the College
of Nursing shootings, Darci made a point of
meeting with the building custodial staff to
ensure that their mental and emotional states
were being addressed.
Darci’s desire to ensure the well being of UA
students, faculty, and staff leads her to go well
beyond administrative duties. Her passion and
commitment to caring for others help to create
a more positive and healthy environment for
the entire University community.
