SETTING
The play takes place in a high school where the students wear
uniforms. The set should reflect the hallways of a school. Think simply,
don’t try to create a realistic setting for each individual scene. The set
should look like a number of hallways on different levels. Scaffolding
would work well. The image of a prison would also be appropriate.
There should be at least one upper platform where some scenes can
take place.
There should also be places for the Chorus to sit so that they are
onstage at all times, unless otherwise noted.

AGATHA REX
61
CHORUS: (Whispering.) Swift and severe…swift and severe…. swift and
severe.
The lights change. HARRY enters and approaches DR.
CREON.
HARRY: Dad?
DR. CREON: What? Oh yes Harry.
HARRY: Do you have a second?
DR. CREON: Actually, now is not a very good time
DR. CREON turns as if to leave.
HARRY: I just wanted to talk to you about Agatha.
DR. CREON stops. He turns again to face HARRY.
DR. CREON: Agatha. You know, of course, about what she's done?
HARRY: It's all over the school.
CHORUS: (Whispering.) Agatha Rex dyed her hair green.
DR. CREON: You know what I have to do.
HARRY: You have to do what you think is right. You have to follow the
rules.
DR. CREON: (Almost surprised that HARRY would answer that way.)
Exactly! (He claps HARRY on the shoulder.) That's exactly it son. I
must follow the rules. You do see that I have to punish Agatha. I’m
glad that we had this chance to talk.
DR. CREON turns as if to leave again.
HARRY: Would you say that I have good sense?
DR. CREON: What?
HARRY: Would you say that I have good sense? A good head on my
shoulders? That I'm sensible?
DR. CREON: (With a laugh.) I think that you have been brought up to be
very sensible.
HARRY: Ok. (He takes a deep breath and runs a hand through his hair.) I
was wondering if there is another side to the story.
DR. CREON: What other side to what story?
HARRY: Sometimes it's hard being the principal’s son. Sometimes people
don't want to tell me things because they think it will get back to you.
They think I'll tell. On the other hand, sometimes people do tell me
things - things you would never find out about because people don't
like to complain to you.
DR. CREON: And why is that?
HARRY: You scare the heck out of people, dad.

62
LINDSAY PRICE
DR. CREON: Is that so?
HARRY: I've been talking to people about Agatha.
DR. CREON: And…?
HARRY: She is the most popular girl in school for all the right reasons,
She's smart, she believes in doing the right thing and people respect
her for that. They think because she stood up for her brothers she
has done a very brave thing. They may be afraid to join her but that
doesn't mean that they wouldn't like to. Dad, I think you're a really
intelligent. Don't be the kind of person who believes his way is the
only way. A man should never be afraid to undo what he has done.
Change your mind. Come on. It would do the school a world of
good to show that you are not rigid in your opinions. I know you can
be open-minded if you want to be.
CHORUS: Wow that was some speech.
JASON: Only Harry could speak up to Dr. Creon like that.
CHORUS: What will he do? What will Cromagnon do?
DR. CREON: Are you finished?
HARRY: I don't have anything else left to say.
DR. CREON: Good. Then you can go.
CHORUS: Oh no!
HARRY: But dad -
DR. CREON: You have no idea what it's like to be in my position.
HARRY: The whole school thinks you're wrong.
DR. CREON: Am I to be run by the whole school. Should I bend to every
whim of the school?
HARRY: I didn't say that.
DR.CREON: You disappoint me Harry. I thought I knew you better.
DR. CREON turns to go.
HARRY: If you expel her dad, I’ll never forgive you. I’ll never respect you
again.
DR. CREON: You speak from your heart and not your head. You'll change
your mind in a few days. You'll see that I was right.
HARRY: If you expel Agatha, you'll have to expel me too.
DR. CREON: Harry, you haven't done anything wrong.
HARRY: I'll expel myself.

AGATHA REX
63
DR. CREON: You can't do that!
HARRY: Then I'll quit. I'll go to another school.
DR. CREON: Harry!
HARRY: I will to.
HARRY leaves.
DR. CREON: HARRY!
DR. CREON stares off in the direction that HARRY has gone.
CHORUS: If only we could talk like that!
HERMAN: If only we weren't afraid!
HELEN: Could we do it?
CHORUS: Could we do it?
AGATHA: You could do it, you know.
The CHORUS all turn their heads towards AGATHA. But
before they can say anything, EUNICE enters and
approaches DR. CREON.
EUNICE: Sir Dr. Creon sir.... (DR. CREON doesn’t answer.) Dr. Creon?
DR. CREON: (Almost shouting.) What is it Eunice, what is it! (EUNICE backs
away in surprise.)
EUNICE: Ms. Berius from the PTA is here. You told me to tell you when she
arrived?
CHORUS: (In awe.) The PTA. The PTA.
DR. CREON: Fine. Fine. Bring her to me please.
EUNICE doesn't move.
DR. CREON: Well, what is it, now?
EUNICE: It's, well, it's about Agatha.
DR. CREON: Not you too Eunice.
EUNICE: It's just that I've been thinking about what she's said -
DR. CREON: (Interrupting.) Did I not give you something to do?
EUNICE: Yes sir, Dr. Creon sir.
She exits. DR. CREON continues to pace. The CHORUS
chants solemnly.
