How Do I Use It?
The System has a set vocabulary of terms.
These terms represent specific exercises to be
used as the actor works on the script. The
exercises are appropriate for any character
and any script.
Given Circumstances
What is It?
The given circumstances are the character
The Stanislavsky System is an intense
details in the script - the facts the playwright
character development process that strives to
gives the actor. They are unchangeable.
make a performance “real” and not artificial.
Focus attention on the geographical, social
In order to achieve this realism, the system
and historical elements in the script.
is used to:
Sample questions to ask:
❖ Bring an actor’s experiences into the
role.
❖ Where am I?
❖ Expand an actor’s imagination.
❖ What is my specific location?
Stanislavsky believed that in order to make ❖ What year is it?
a character true, the character must be
approached from the inside. That means ❖ What relationships do I have?
drawing on the real inside life of the actor,
❖ What has happened before the play
most specifica ly drawing on memories. The
begins?
actor also has to create the inside life of the
character: the character has to have innerthought,
backstory, beliefs, and so on, just This is also referred to in some books as
Super Objective
as a real person does.
the Super Task. The Super Objective is the
When the actor answers questions about main theme of the play. The subject of the
the character, they should speak in the first play. Everything drives toward the Super
person. “I am…” “I want…”
Objective.
The use of the imagination is very important: Some examples:
the system is not about working out your ❖ The Glass Menagerie: True
problems on stage as therapy! Stanislavsky escape is impossible.
always focuses on the art of the process:
“Love the art in yourself, not yourself in the ❖ Hamlet: Revenge.
art.”
❖ The Crucible: Good vs Evil.
DIRECTING THE HIGH SCHOOL PLAY – BE A VISIONARY
Directors need to have a
vision for the play. That
means ALL directors:
professional, community,
high school, etc.
www.theatrefolk.com
Why is it important to have a vision? Because
vision gives a play a unifying factor. It gives
the play a drive, a look, a tone. Having a
vision can bring clarity to a not-so-clear play.
It helps students focus on the bigger picture.
It adds to the overall experience. A vision
gives a director purpose; it’s the creative
element the director brings to the table.
And quite frankly, it’s fun.
Visions do not have to be complicated and
esoteric. The simpler the vision the easier
it wi l be to convey to the cast, crew and
designers.
There’s nothing wrong with a vision o fun
and frivolity – just make it clear. Then
be consistent with what you’re trying to
achieve.
For Example
I directed a version of Alice in
Wonderland. The line of dialogue that
rea ly jumped out at me after reading the
book was from the tea party: “We’re a l mad
here so you must be too.” I thought it was
interesting that Alice’s response was that
she didn’t want to be mad, like she didn’t
want a cold.
My vision was to focus on the madness of
Wonderland and see if the other characters
Get more free stuff at: theatrefolk.com/free
MONOLOGUE – CHILL FROM THE SNOW SHOW
by Lindsay Price
could make Alice crazy as we l. I also had a
technical vision for the play, which was to
make a l the fantastical elements practical
for school use.
Use this monologue for
your next IE!
I created a clear physical division between
the Wonderland characters and Alice. Alice
was the only character with flesh showing –
a l the others were as inhuman as possible.
I had a trio of girls play the Cheshire Cat
instead of one to emphasize the madness of
the world.
The Wonderland characters also treated
Alice poorly; shoving her, towering over her,
pinching her. They hissed at her from the
darkness. She was not of their ‘world’ and
the only way she could be is if she changed;
became more like them. This is how a vision
translates to the stage. The audience saw a
production of Alice in Wonderland,
but the show (from me, to the teacher
creating the props, to the girl playing Alice)
had vision.
Where Does Vision Come From?
It truly is the fun part! Highlight the one
word, the one image, the one action that
speaks to you in the script. Find music that
represents the story, the main character.
Give each character a colour. Find magazine
pictures, pictures of art, sculptures, anything
that can help you and everyone you talk
to about the play, SEE the play. Create a
scrapbook. The more visual the vision can
be, the better.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! I won’t do it,
I won’t do it, I won’t!
He turns to look at an imaginary metal flagpole
beside him.
You can’t tempt me oh cold and silent one. You stand
there so straight and tall, holding your flags day after day.
(turning his back) I am not tempted. I don’t do these types
of things. I know what happens. (turning to the pole) I
KNOW science. Hot and cold. Water and ice. I’m on it.
You can’t fool me. Every year there is a story of a reckless
youth, a foolish stupid boy, someone who couldn’t say no
like I can. I know what will happen. (holding up hand up
to the flagpole) You’re wasting your time and your taunts.
Taunt me no more.
Bookmark our Free Resources page.
CHILL stalks away but then stops. He slowly
turns to face the flagpole.
But. What. If. It’s. Not. True? What if they’re just stories?
Fabrications? Lies? Your cold and silent stature is a façade?
A ruse? The whole frozen tongue thing is just an old wives’
tale? What if I stick out my tongue and it doesn’t… stick?
What if nothing happens? It’s tempting. Very tempting.
hissing for the stovepipe-hat-wearing villain!
Nell Pureheart and her wise old Auntie Nora are
about to lose the family homestead to unscrupulous
banker Wiley Whiplash. Whiplash will forgive the
mortgage under one condition: Nell must marry him!
Nell and Nora call on heroic Casey Cleandeed to save
the day. Unfortunately, despite his recent law degree,
he's not very bright. The play follows a side-splitting
trail of intrigue and deception until the truth about
the homestead is finally revealed!
Power Play
by Lindsay Price
Drama, Experimental Form, Issue-Based
55 Minutes, 2M+3W
A gunshot is heard. Which of the five characters did
it and why?
Was it the Goth girl? The football star? The superintelligent
geek?
High school violence is a hot media topic, but it is too
often simplistically portrayed by putting teens into
tidy categories and pointing at the outsider.
Power Play explores the realities and the stereotypes
of high school violence - not just the brutal shock of
the school shooting, but also verbal harassment and
bullying. Violence is about power. So is high school.
The Pregnancy Project
by Lindsay Price
Drama, Character Study, Issue-Based
60 Minutes, 5M+15W
The project seems simple enough. Everyone (girls
AND boys) wears a pregnancy belly to simulate
what it feels like to be pregnant. Bonus points go to
students who wear the belly 24/7. Easy, right? It's not
as if it's real.
Lucy, who seems to live the ideal life, isn't finding the
project so easy. She's a week late. And every day that
passes is another day when life is far from ideal.
Each member of the ensemble gets a monologue in
this issue-driven play. No statistics. No preaching.
by Lindsay Price
Character Study, Choral Work, Issue-Based
45 Minutes, 5M+11W, Plus Ensemble
Not a typical "teen angst" play.
Four teenagers struggle with life. Alex is a refugee.
Tera is faced with an unpopular decision when all
she wants to be is popular. Penny is getting up at five
to do in a day. And Kyle can't live up to his parents'
expectations. It is the week before the prom and for
these four characters, everything is coming to a head.
Tick Talk
Character Study, Choral Work, Experimental Form
25 Minutes, 2M+6W+5 Either
The teenagers in Tick Talk have a lot to say, but no
way to say it. Most characters are limited to only
ONE WORD for the whole play.
A fascinating challenge for actors: What happens
when a character has just one word to express hopes,
fears, and frustrations? What if they have something
terribly important to say but can't? They'd better find
a way soon: Time is running out.
Vignette Plays
betweenity
by Lindsay Price
Comedy, Choral Work, Vignettes
30 Minutes, 4M+4W+4 Either, Easily Expandable
HS/MS
“It’s the grace in-between. It’s the breath left unseen. It’s
the catch and the break and the hole in the screen.”
We’ve all been there. The awkward pause. The silence
where you just can’t think of something to say. The
space in-between words where nothing is said and yet
so much is spoken. The state of being between.
This vignette play explores the beats, pauses, and
never-ending silences in conversation. The girl who
tries to tell her best friend she wants to date him. The
boy who creates the wrong kind of pause. The sister
who is dealing with the silent treatment. The guy
who wants to confess but can’t open his mouth. The
daughter who doesn’t want to talk because talking
makes her remember.
at all levels with a great technique exploration. How
Funhouse
by Lindsay Price
Issue-Based, Movement-based, Vignettes
30 Minutes, 4M+16 Either
HS/MS
I’ve had better. Much better. Sneakier. Sit beside me
at lunch, pretend to be my friend. Bolder. They try to
drag me into the bathroom. Meaner. Spit at me. Knock
books out of my arms. Pinch me. Treat me like a piece
of garbage, think it’s funny to try and make me eat
garbage, be garbage.
This play looks at the bullied, the bully, and the
bystander through mostly non-verbal vignettes. Life
for the bullied is like a funhouse, but the funhouse is
anything but fun.
How can you stand your ground when you’re on
a falling floor? How can you move forward when
you’re caught like a mouse in a maze? How can you
win Whac-A-Mole when you’re the mole? How can
you like yourself while standing in a distorted hall of
of the undead - Hamlet knows he must stop him! Or
not. If he could only be sure…
A clever adaptation of the Shakespeare’s classic
tragedy, Hamlet, Zombie Killer of Denmark blends
the original text with new, zombified dialogue, with
much of the new text written in the iambic tradition
of Shakespeare.
Shakespeare stands before you. A book of sonnets in
his hands. His sonnets. 154 of them. Will you take the
book? Will you read the sonnets?
NO WAY!!!!!!
Shakespeare isn't meant to be read. He's meant to be
performed, shouted, loved, wept with, cursed over,
died for, fought for, bled for!
You might think that's a bit much. Somewhat overemotional.
You can't understand a word Shakespeare
says, and now you're supposed to get choked up? And
bleed? Over Sonnets?
Fair enough. Start with Will and Whimsy. Modern
Come, deal justly with me.
HAMLET: Why, any thing, but to the purpose. You were sent for; and
there is a kind of confession in your looks which your
modesties have not craft enough to colour: I know the
good king and queen have sent for you.
ROSENCRANTZ: To what end, my lord?
obligation of our ever-preserved love, be even and direct with
ROSENCRANTZ: (Aside to GUILDENSTERN) What say you?
HAMLET: (Aside) Nay, then, I have an eye of you. (aloud) If you love
me, hold not off.
GUILDENSTERN: My lord, we were sent for.
HAMLET: What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason, how
infinite in faculty, in form and moving how express and
admirable, in action how like an angel. In apprehension how
like a god. And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?
Man delights not me: no, nor woman neither, though by your
smiling you seem to say so.
ROSENCRANTZ: My lord, there was no such stuff in my thoughts.
HAMLET: Why did ye laugh then, when I said 'man delights not me'?
ROSENCRANTZ: To think, my lord, if you delight not in man, what lenten
entertainment the players shall receive from you: we coted
them on the way; and hither are they coming, to offer you
service.
Hamlet
Note how Hamlet keeps asking his friends why they
are there and they keep deflecting him. As the scene
goes on Hamlet comes to the realisation that his lifelong
friends are not on his side. How does this make
Hamlet feel?
Decide on a past relationship between the three
friends. How long have they known one another? The
more you know about the relationship, the more
Hamlet will be able to emotionally react to what
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are doing.
How does Rosencrantz react when Guildenstern spills
Quickly? Slowly? Remorsefully?
It is in this speech that Hamlet turns away from his
friends. What is he doing physically? He seems to go
quite mad here and really tries to freak out his
“former” friends.
quintessence: the purest essence of
Rosencrantz laughs at the line “man delights not me.”
Sixteen in 10 Minutes or Less
by Bradley Hayward
Character Study, Experimental Form, Issue-Based
100 Minutes, 3M+4W, Expandable to 13M+17W+3 Either
The lives of seven teenagers become intertwined in
this humorous and oftentimes bittersweet collection
of ten minute plays. From extracting a gummy bear
out of a new set of braces to coping with bullies, these
characters share their innermost hopes and fears with
each other, ten minutes at a time. As the audience
drops in on these intimate moments, they will come
to understand that being sixteen isn't always easy.
The plays herein may be licensed together or
separately. The piece was conceived as a full
length evening of entertainment, but each short
stands perfectly well on its own without any prior
knowledge of the characters.
Ten Minute Play Series:
Be Challenged
by Lindsay Price
Drama, Character Study, Student Directors
10 Minutes,
Six short plays
Our Ten Minute Play Series continues with these
'challenging' shorts. What makes them challenging?
The characters are more complex, like in Bottle Baby
or Sunday Lunch. The rhythms in the scene require
more specific timing to make them work, like in Oh
Chad and You. Or there's a twist that needs more
than simple memorization and blocking like Hall
Pass and Juice Box.
All in all, there's a lot packed into these ten minute
plays. Up for the challenge?
Ten Minute Play Series:
Girls & Guys
by Lindsay Price
Drama, Character Study, Student Directors
10 Minutes,
This collection of short plays in our Ten Minute Play
Series focuses on the relationships between girls and
guys. The stereotypes, the sisters who look up to their
older brothers, the boys who will do anything for
their girls, the friends who don't want to let go.
Add to the mix a couple of gender neutral plays where
the script takes on a much different tone if played
by all girls, all guys or a mix of the two. It's all about
bringing the characters on the page to life on the
stage.
