constructed on the Macon campus off Mercer
University Drive, at I-75. The construction is the
first step in the University’s redevelopment
efforts <strong>to</strong> have Mercer University Drive <strong>be</strong>come
the main entrance <strong>to</strong> the campus.
“We are delighted with the prospect of
adding this significant amenity <strong>to</strong> the campus,”
said Godsey. “The hotel’s location, just off of I-
travelers as well as provide housing for alumni
and visi<strong>to</strong>rs attending special programs and
After interviewing a num<strong>be</strong>r of prospective
formerly known as The Hotel Group, of Auburn,
will <strong>be</strong>gin this spring, with the <strong>Inn</strong> expected <strong>to</strong>
a restaurant and a small conference area. After
construction, PHD Hotels will operate and
manage the <strong>Inn</strong>, with the University <strong>be</strong>ing an
equity partner.
“We are thrilled <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> involved with the
University in building this hotel on campus, and
we look forward <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong>ing part of the
redevelopment plans for the campus,” said Tom
Hunt, president and CEO of PHD Hotels. “Being
hotel as well as the University.”
The Mercer project is the fourth <strong>Hil<strong>to</strong>n</strong>
Tift College of Education Unveils
University’s Second Ph.D. Program
The Tift College of Education will offer three
new programs that will help it <strong>to</strong> meet critical
education needs in Georgia. The new programs
will <strong>be</strong>gin this fall including the College’s first
Ph.D. and a cutting-edge program in Early Care
“We feel strongly about meeting the needs of
the communities in which we are located, and
these new programs are prime examples of the
quality programs we are committed <strong>to</strong>
providing,” Dean Carl Martray said. “The
programs we have developed and are initiating
this fall do just that. We’ve surveyed school
districts and child care centers and partnered
with various state agencies <strong>to</strong> identify
educational needs, and we’ve developed
programs designed <strong>to</strong> help meet the needs of
central Georgia, the greater Atlanta region and
the entire state.”
On Mercer’s Macon and Atlanta campuses,
the College will accept the charter class for its
Ph.D. in Educational Leadership Program for P-
12 School Leadership. The academic program
will provide a terminal research degree in
Ph.D. track, one in Higher Education
Administration, will <strong>be</strong>gin in fall 2007.
The Ph.D. in educational leadership is the
second Ph.D. <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> offered by Mercer. The
Southern School of Pharmacy has a Ph.D. in
pharmaceutical sciences.
The College will also <strong>be</strong>gin a new program at
the Henry County Regional Academic Center
entitled Early Care and Education, which will
allow students <strong>to</strong> receive a bachelor’s degree
with a specialization in birth <strong>to</strong> five-year-old
education.
For college graduates who want <strong>to</strong> redirect
their career <strong>to</strong> education, a new master of arts in
teaching degree program will <strong>be</strong> offered on the
Atlanta campus. The program is designed for
individuals with bachelor’s degrees in noneducation
fields <strong>to</strong> earn a master’s degree in
Mercer <strong>to</strong> Launch
Comprehensive
Medical Practice
On March 9, President
R. Kirby Godsey
announced the establishment
of a new
comprehensive medical
practice called Mercer
Medicine, LLC.
“The idea <strong>be</strong>hind
Mercer Medicine is <strong>to</strong>
have a multi-specialty,
comprehensive, Alan Justice, M.D.
integrated practice of
medicine that is academically based,” said
Godsey. “It will <strong>be</strong> the only practice of its type
<strong>be</strong>tween Emory in Atlanta and the Mayo Clinic in
Jacksonville.”
Mercer Medicine is a separate legal entity,
wholly owned by the University, with its own
governing board.
“Macon has many outstanding physician
practices, but they tend <strong>to</strong> focus generally on
one or a few medical disciplines,” said Godsey.
“Our idea ultimately is <strong>to</strong> offer a comprehensive
combination of disciplines. Patients can come <strong>to</strong>
this practice and see a range of physicians and
have all their tests and medical services
completed in one place.”
Poplar Physicians, LLC, is the first practice <strong>to</strong>
<strong>be</strong>come a part of Mercer Medicine. It was
established in 1998 by two Mercer School of
Medicine graduates, Alan Justice, M.D., and
Lillette Intaphan, M.D. They were later joined by
Jason Woods, M.D., and Maryam Sedghi, M.D.
The practice brings both internal medicine and
family medicine <strong>to</strong> Mercer Medicine. Dr. Justice
has <strong>be</strong>en selected <strong>to</strong> serve as the medical
direc<strong>to</strong>r of the new clinic.
“We want a range of disciplines represented
in selecting the physicians and the practices we
hire or acquire,” said Godsey. “We want <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong>
sure physicians represent the very <strong>be</strong>st in their
field and they want <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> a part of a work culture
that is very patient centered.”
Godsey said, “The School of Medicine is 25
years old and the medical community in Macon
has continued <strong>to</strong> mature. It is time for Mercer <strong>to</strong>
enhance the clinical practice <strong>to</strong> support the
School of Medicine.”

Underwood Appoints Brumley <strong>to</strong> Senior Position
Mercer President-elect and former Baylor Interim President William D.
Underwood announced the appointment of Larry D. Brumley as senior vice
president and chief of staff at Mercer, effective June 1.
Currently serving as interim vice president for marketing and
communications at Baylor, Brumley was associate vice president for
university relations at Mercer for six years <strong>be</strong>fore joining Baylor in 1997.
“Larry Brumley is among the brightest young leaders in higher
