Dr. Lina Moreno Awarded a
Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust Grant
Dr. Lina Moreno, Dows and Department of Orthodontics,
has been awarded a two-year Roy J. Carver
Charitable Trust grant for $180,000. The grant will
support her research, “Genetic and Environmental Effects
on the Development of Malocclusion.” The proposed
project will build upon the Iowa Fluoride Study
(IFS) and will utilize advanced imaging capture and
three-dimensional geometric morphometric (GM) techniques to generate
a set of clinical and morphological dental malocclusion phentotypes
from existing longitudinal dental casts. The data will be related to longitudinal
environmental behaviors and exposures and also genomewide
association scan (GWAS) data to identify both the genetic and environmental
factors that predisposed to the occurrence of malocclusion
phenotypes. The results will be essential for developing prevention
programs and for improving the orthodontic care outcomes of affected
individuals. Such efforts will enhance the overall health of Iowans.
Dr. Moreno is the principal investigator. Drs. Steven Levy and
John Warren, Preventive & Community Dentistry, are co-investigators.
Dr. Mary Marazita, University of Pittsburgh, is a consultant and Dr. Steve
Miller is a postdoctoral research fellow on the project.

Marlee Hansen, Amber Shimek, and Lauren Harvey Receive the
Michael W. Finkelstein Award for Superior Achievement in Dental Histology
The UI Anatomy and Cell Biology Student Awards Ceremony and Reception were held on May 1,
2012, in the MacEwen Conference Room, Bowen Science Building. Three second-year College of Dentistry
dental students (Marlee Hansen, Amber Shimek, and Lauren Harvey) received the Michael W. Finkelstein
Award for Superior Achievement in Dental Histology. The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology
presents the award annually to dental students who demonstrate high scholastic achievement in histology
together with particular dedication to those ideals of scholarship and professionalism as exemplified
by Dr. Michael Finkelstein, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine, during his tenure as
professor of oral pathology and anatomy.

Department of Operative Dentistry Holds Spring Banquet
The Department of Operative Dentistry’s spring banquet was held recently. During the banquet,
awards were given to the D1 and D3 students. (Above, left to right): Nicholas Barnard (D3) who received
the Wallace W. Johnson Operative Dentistry Award; Annalee Reicks (D3) who received the Williamson
Scholarship Award; Dr. Sandra Guzman-Armstrong, Department of Operative Dentistry, who
presented awards to the D3 students; Mike Morio (D3) who received the Academy of Operative Dentistry
Award; Peter Ruggiero (D1) who received the Rudy E. Minger Memorial Award; and Dr. Justine Kolker,
Department of Operative Dentistry, who presented the award to Peter.

Recently, the D3 students
had a potluck at the end of their
Oral Pathology, Radiology, and
Medicine rotation. Dr. Joanna Clancy,
visiting assistant professor, suggested
a Kentucky Derby theme.

Dare to Care Day

The University of Iowa Pediatric Dental Club participated in Dare to Care Day in conjunction with
the University of Iowa Association of Nursing Students (UIANS). The University of Iowa College of Nursing
organized the event, inviting all children, elementary-age and younger, to Dare to Care Day at the
Iowa Children's Museum. The event was hosted on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. and included
fun, educational, and hands-on activities for children who relate to nursing and living a healthy lifestyle.
The Pediatric Dental Club was set up in the mock dental office at the event. Dental students provided
a nutrition activity to help children make healthful choices when selecting snacks and beverages.
Puppets were used to demonstrate oral hygiene and brushing technique to attendees. The group also
distributed toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss.
The following students volunteered for the event: Nate Hilbrands (D3), Katie Nagel (D2), Natalie
Crooks (D3), Jessica Grabouski (D2), Justine Stemper (D2), Katie Naberhaus (D2), and Matt Smith (D2).
The Pediatric Dental Club would like to recognize Samantha Specht from UIANS for help with organization
as well as the Iowa Children’s Museum and Colgate and Oral B for their donations.
