Professor Julie Holloway, who recently joined
the UI Department of Prosthodontics, has agreed to
serve as interim DEO of the department. Dr. Holloway,
who has served in prosthodontics for 18 years,
received her DDS and MS in prosthodontics from
Ohio State University where she was a faculty member
in the prosthodontics department and director of
the advanced prosthodontic graduate program.
Dr. Galen Schneider has served as DEO in
the Department of Prosthodontics since 2006 and
has been a faculty member of the department since 1999. He will now
serve as executive associate dean of the College of Dentistry.

a ceremony and press conference
that was held in Des Moines at
Delta Dental of Iowa on September 1,
2011. Representatives from Delta Dental
of Iowa, state government, the UI
College of Dentistry, the press, and
many other interested individuals also
attended. The ceremony was held to
celebrate the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation
milestone of giving over $1 million
to dentists as part of the “FIND”
program. The project recruits dentists
to practice in rural, underserved areas
within Iowa, and in return, the program
assists in repaying the recruits’ dental
education debt. The FIND project was
established in 2002 and offers a threeyear
grant of $50,000 to the dentists for
loan repayment.

Drs. Gratz and Fuller each received $50,000
from Delta Dental of Iowa. Dr. Harbaugh received
$100,000 from the Fulfilling Iowa’s
Need for Dentists (FIND) project.

2011 Faculty Grants/Renewals
Dr. Steven Levy, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, has received
a non-competitive grant renewal of $113,912 from Delta Dental of Iowa for his
“Iowa Fluoride Study Age 17 Data Collection.” Co-investigators include Drs. John
Warren and Teresa Marshall, Preventive and Community Dentistry; Dr. David Drake,
Dows and Endodontics; Dr. Justine Kolker, Operative Dentistry; and Dr. Karin Weber-
Gasparoni, Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Levy also received $274,920 for his non-competitive renewal of
“Predoctoral Training Program in Dental Public Health at the University of Iowa.” Dr.
Raymond Kuthy, Preventive & Community, is co-investigator; Tina Craig, Preventive
& Community, is coordinator.
Dr. Levy also received a non-competitive grant renewal of $816,769 for his
research project, “Fluoride and Other Factors in Childhood and Adolescent Bone Development.”
Co-investigators include Drs. Julie Eichenberger-Gilmore, ICTS; Kathy
Janz, Health & Sports Studies; and James Torner, Trudy Burns, and Linda Snetselaar,
Epidemiology.
Dr. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research, has received $48,167 from
Astra Tech AB for his grant proposal, “Evaluation of Keratinocyte Cellular Dynamics
and Proinflammatory Cytokine/Chemokines Expression on OxPEKK Polymer Surfaces.”
Co-investigators include Dr. Kim Brogden, Dows and Periodontics, and Dr.
Deborah Dawson, Biostatistics Unit and Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Jeffrey Banas, Dows and Pediatric Dentistry, received a non-competitive
renewal amount of $222,750 for his research, “Streptococcus mutans Strain Susceptibility
Differences to Host Defense Peptides.” Co-investigators include Drs. Kim
Brogden, Dows and Periodontics; David Drake, Dows and Endodontics; Deborah
Dawson, Biostatistics Unit and Pediatric Dentistry; and Steven Levy, Preventive &
Community Dentistry.
Dr. Christopher Squier, Dows and Oral Pathology, Radiology & Medicine, received
a non-competitive renewal amount of $461,094 for his “Institutional Training
Program in Oral Health Research (T32)” grant. Co-director on this training grant includes
Dr. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research. Training program codirectors
include Drs. John Warren, Preventive and Community, and James S. Wefel,
director of Dows, and professor, Pediatric Dentistry.

Club awardees. Eligible for consideration is any

has demonstrated special qualities in performing their

and of individuals who work on football Saturdays. Special parking arrangements have been made for permit holders who work during football
games. We appreciate your assistance in informing your staff members who work during these scheduled events, especially those without
