Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Julie Holloway, who recently joined<br />
the UI Department <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontics, has agreed to<br />
serve as interim DEO <strong>of</strong> the department. Dr. Holloway,<br />
who has served in prosthodontics for 18 years,<br />
received her DDS and MS in prosthodontics from<br />
Ohio State <strong>University</strong> where she was a faculty member<br />
in the prosthodontics department and director <strong>of</strong><br />
the advanced prosthodontic graduate program.<br />
Dr. Galen Schneider has served as DEO in<br />
the Department <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontics since 2006 and<br />
has been a faculty member <strong>of</strong> the department since 1999. He will now<br />
serve as executive associate dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>.<br />

a ceremony and press conference<br />
that was held in Des Moines at<br />
Delta Dental <strong>of</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong> on September 1,<br />
2011. Representatives from Delta Dental<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong>, state government, the UI<br />
<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>, the press, and<br />
many other interested individuals also<br />
attended. The ceremony was held to<br />
celebrate the Delta Dental <strong>of</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong> Foundation<br />
milestone <strong>of</strong> giving over $1 million<br />
to dentists as part <strong>of</strong> the “FIND”<br />
program. The project recruits dentists<br />
to practice in rural, underserved areas<br />
within <strong>Iowa</strong>, and in return, the program<br />
assists in repaying the recruits’ dental<br />
education debt. The FIND project was<br />
established in 2002 and <strong>of</strong>fers a threeyear<br />
grant <strong>of</strong> $50,000 to the dentists for<br />
loan repayment.<br />

Drs. Gratz and Fuller each received $50,000<br />
from Delta Dental <strong>of</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong>. Dr. Harbaugh received<br />
$100,000 from the Fulfilling <strong>Iowa</strong>’s<br />
Need for Dentists (FIND) project.

2011 Faculty Grants/Renewals<br />
Dr. Steven Levy, Department <strong>of</strong> Preventive & Community <strong>Dentistry</strong>, has received<br />
a non-competitive grant renewal <strong>of</strong> $113,912 from Delta Dental <strong>of</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong> for his<br />
“<strong>Iowa</strong> Fluoride Study Age 17 Data Collection.” Co-investigators include Drs. John<br />
Warren and Teresa Marshall, Preventive and Community <strong>Dentistry</strong>; Dr. David Drake,<br />
Dows and Endodontics; Dr. Justine Kolker, Operative <strong>Dentistry</strong>; and Dr. Karin Weber-<br />
Gasparoni, Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>.<br />
Dr. Levy also received $274,920 for his non-competitive renewal <strong>of</strong><br />
“Predoctoral Training Program in Dental Public Health at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong>.” Dr.<br />
Raymond Kuthy, Preventive & Community, is co-investigator; Tina Craig, Preventive<br />
& Community, is coordinator.<br />
Dr. Levy also received a non-competitive grant renewal <strong>of</strong> $816,769 for his<br />
research project, “Fluoride and Other Factors in Childhood and Adolescent Bone Development.”<br />
Co-investigators include Drs. Julie Eichenberger-Gilmore, ICTS; Kathy<br />
Janz, Health & Sports Studies; and James Torner, Trudy Burns, and Linda Snetselaar,<br />
Epidemiology.<br />
Dr. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research, has received $48,167 from<br />
Astra Tech AB for his grant proposal, “Evaluation <strong>of</strong> Keratinocyte Cellular Dynamics<br />
and Proinflammatory Cytokine/Chemokines Expression on OxPEKK Polymer Surfaces.”<br />
Co-investigators include Dr. Kim Brogden, Dows and Periodontics, and Dr.<br />
Deborah Dawson, Biostatistics Unit and Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>.<br />
Dr. Jeffrey Banas, Dows and Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>, received a non-competitive<br />
renewal amount <strong>of</strong> $222,750 for his research, “Streptococcus mutans Strain Susceptibility<br />
Differences to Host Defense Peptides.” Co-investigators include Drs. Kim<br />
Brogden, Dows and Periodontics; David Drake, Dows and Endodontics; Deborah<br />
Dawson, Biostatistics Unit and Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>; and Steven Levy, Preventive &<br />
Community <strong>Dentistry</strong>.<br />
Dr. Christopher Squier, Dows and Oral Pathology, Radiology & Medicine, received<br />
a non-competitive renewal amount <strong>of</strong> $461,094 for his “Institutional Training<br />
Program in Oral Health Research (T32)” grant. Co-director on this training grant includes<br />
Dr. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research. Training program codirectors<br />
include Drs. John Warren, Preventive and Community, and James S. Wefel,<br />
director <strong>of</strong> Dows, and pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Pediatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>.

has demonstrated special qualities in performing their<br />
