What Are We Learning?
Reading
Higher level reading comprehension uses
context clues in the text and builds
vocabulary. The Latin/Greek roots to be
studied this quarter include aud-, voc-,
spect-, terr-, trac-, and tract-. The ability
to use context clues also assists students
with identifying organizational text
structures (patterns –chronological,
spatial, cause/effect, sequence, problem/
solution). Effective use of this reading
strategy, along with character and plot
analysis, is very effective with Social
Studies and other non-fiction texts. This is
another focus during this second quarter.
Math
Please continuously work on
multiplication facts with your student.
Knowing the basic multiplication facts helps
your student with every day math and with
ongoing AKS and new math concepts like
factors and multiplies, prime and composite
numbers covered the first two weeks of this
quarter. Our current unit on fractions
focuses on comparing fractions, equivalent
fractions, and adding/subtracting fractions
and mixed numbers using like denominators.
Ask your student about vocabulary words
such as denominator, numerator, equivalent,
prime, composite, multiple, and factor.
Language Arts
Every day come prepared to be
the apple of
your teacher’s eye!
Writing
Our unit on informational writing has
begun. How is it different from/same as
a personal narrative? Students will write
an essay either showing their own
expertise on a subject or researching a
topic that corresponds to the AKS and
may require reference skills such as using
the atlas, thesaurus, almanac, dictionary,
and encyclopedia. The final product may
also include the following: table of
contents, index, glossary, guide words,
appendix, illustrations, and/or outlines.
When writing the informational essay,
students must focus on maintaining
consistent number, gender, point of
view and verb tense.
Social Studies
What happens to the North American
continent and its inhabitants when the
European colonists settle the land? What is
the impact on the Native Americans
(effect)? We continue to study the history
of North America the establishment of the
first colonies – New England, Middle, and
Southern Colonies – and the resulting
Revolution that shaped the first thirteen
states of the new United States of America.
Science
The sun, the moon, and the stars – that’s
our Solar System. How does it work?
What is the role of each part of the solar
system in our daily existence? How does
the moon effect our environment? Why is
the sun brighter than other stars in the
solar system? The scientific study and
analysis of our world will help us to
answer all of these questions, and more.

this year?
Read with your child nightly. Encourage
the story.
