Singleton edition
Issue 5 - November 2010
Fans met the Newcastle
Knights and attended
a football clinic at the
Muswellbrook Blitz, held
earlier this year.
Knights visit Singleton for Christmas
It may be the off
season, but Singleton
locals are set to get
up close and personal
with the Newcastle
Knights thanks to
Community Alliance
partner, Coal & Allied.
In the final “Knights blitz”
of the year, to be held at Resco
Park from 4 to 6.30pm on
Thursday 2December, players
will conduct a training session,
sign autographs and meet their
Singleton fans face-to-face.
The free festivities will
also feature Coal & Allied’s
Community Fund partners,
refreshments and plenty
of entertainment.
Coal & Allied Community
Relations Manager Jen Bowcock
said the blitz will not only be
a great chance for the people
of Singleton and surrounding
districts to meet the Knights,
but also a way for players to
thank our supporters for their
ongoing commitment.
“The Singleton Blitz
will mark a great end to
an excellent year for the
Community Alliance where
we have brought an array
of programmes, events and
activities to our communities
in the Hunter region,” Jen said.
“We hope the Hunter
Valley community has
enjoyed participating in our
Alliance programmes and
activities as much as we have
enjoyed bringing them to the
community,” Jen said.
“We look forward to
continue working with the
Newcastle Knights to bring
sustainable benefits to the
region through the Community
Alliance again next year.”
From the GMs
Graham Gageler
As we near the end
of another year it has
been an eventful one at
Hunter Valley Operations
(HVO). We have been
providing information to
the community about our
plans at HVO to extend our
existing Carrington Pit,
with the Environmental
Assessment of our proposal
recently on public display
in Singleton. We are now
in the process of reviewing
comments received from
the community to the
Department of Planning
and will keep you up to date
as this process continues.
On a safety front we
have remained focused on
reducing our incidents and
injuries, with Coal & Allied
receiving the NovaSkill
Safety Awareness Host of
the Year award recently.
I would also like to
take this opportunity to
congratulate one of our
fourth year apprentices,
Clint Mungoven, who
was also recognised
by NovaSkill, taking
out the Mechanical
Trades Apprentice of the
Year award which is a
great achievement.
On a community front
I was proud to open our
doors to 50 Indigenous
AFL players who were able
to get a behind the scenes
look at our operation
and meet some of our
team in October. The
visit was part of a new
partnership called Footy
Means Business and you
can read more about it in
this newsletter.
Cam Halfpenny
Welcome to another
edition of our Singleton
community newsletter,
where you can find out
more about our next round
of shopfront information
sessions which have
attracted a lot of interest
from Singleton residents.
“We have remained focused on reducing our incidents
and injuries, with Coal & Allied receiving the NovaSkill
Safety Awareness Host of the Year award recently.”
As Graham mentioned it
has been another non-stop
year for Coal & Allied, and at
Mount Thorley Warkworth
we have also been talking to
the community about our
growth plans. The public
exhibition for our Warkworth
Extension project has been
held and our responses
to submissions are now
available on the Department
of Planning website;
Abbey Green North project
alterations has gone through
all of the various stages of
the assessment process and
is now with the Department
for a determination. As we
receive more information
on this project we will keep
you informed.
Our site donations
committee has been
actively partnering with
local community groups
and organisations over the
past few months and you
can see some of these great
programmes we have been
proud to support in this
newsletter. I would also
like to congratulate MTW
employee Martin Phillips
whose commitment to
the Singleton community
was recognised by the
Singleton Apex Club who
recently appointed him
a Life Member which is a
remarkable achievement.
As this is our final
newsletter for the year
we would like to take this
opportunity to remind you
to stay safe during festive
season, and to have a happy
and relaxing new year.
Coal & Allied gets behind
Indigenous footballers
Fifty young Indigenous
football players from across
Australia visited Coal &
Allied’s Hunter Valley
Operations recently as
part of the Rio Tinto and
AFL partnership, Footy
Means Business.
The partnership,
launched in May this year,
promotes education and
employment opportunities
for 18 to 24 year old
Indigenous males by
providing exposure to
elite AFL programmes
and training, along with
networking opportunities
in corporate environments
to strengthen leadership
and teamwork skills.
The group’s visit to
Hunter Valley Operations
provided an insight into
how the coal mining
industry works as well
as providing a great
opportunity to meet some of
our Coal & Allied employees.
Hunter Valley Operations
General Manager
Operations Graham Gageler
said he was pleased to host
the group and showcase the
variety of careers available
in the mining industry.
“The players showed a
keen interest in how the
mine site operates and were
particularly struck by the
scale and complexity of the
operation,” Graham said.
“They learnt some
important facts that I think
put it all in perspective for
them - that two dragline
machines could fit into
the MCG, and that it
would only take seven
days to fill the MCG to the
top with overburden and
coal mined by the fleet
of equipment at Hunter
Valley Operations.
“They were a great
group to show around and I
certainly hope they enjoyed
the visit and have learnt
about what happens on a
coal mine.”
10 tonnes of e-waste saved
An ongoing e-waste
programme between Mount
Thorley Warkworth, Singleton
Council, and Thiess Services
has resulted in nearly 10
tonnes of electrical goods
being recycled in September.
The biannioal programme
recycles unwanted
electrical goods given by
members of the community
including televisions,
computer monitors and
mobile phones.
More than 95 per cent or
9.8 tonnes of the e-waste
was able to be recycled.
“With an estimated 70
per cent of heavy metals
in landfill coming from
e-waste, this is a great result
for our community and local
environment,” Martin said.
“Many people who
dropped off e-waste were
also interested in how the
items are recycled.”
“I thank Martin for his
outstanding contribution
to the community through
the club and through his
own initiatives.”
Martin said it was a
huge honour to receive Life
Membership with the club
but it was an even bigger
honour to be a part of the
Singleton community.
“Originally from Sydney, I
joined Apex in 1992 as a way
“More than 95 per cent or 9.8 tonnes
of the e-waste was able to be recycled.”
Mount Thorley
Warkworth Maintenance
Superintendent and
programme organiser
Martin Phillips said the
September collection saw
close to 1000 unwanted
electrical items in just
four hours.
Martin’s involvement in the
programme is an extension
of his outstanding personal
commitment to the Singleton
community – a commitment
recognised by the Singleton
Apex Club who recently
appointed him a Life Member.
Singleton Apex Club
Outgoing President Dave Paul
said Martin is the 23rd person
to receive a Life Membership
with the Singleton Apex Club,
which has been in operation
since 1955.
“Martin truly deserves
the Life Membership after
18 years of service with the
club,” Dave said.
to network and meet people
but it soon became a great
avenue for me to give back
to the community, which I
enjoy doing,” Martin said.
Mount Thorley
Warkworth General
Manager Operations Cam
Halfpenny said Martin
has shown a strong and
long- term passion to serving
the Singleton community.
“He embodies the
community spirit of
Singleton and is a great role
model and mentor to other
people at Mount Thorley
Warkworth and in the
local community.”
community investment,
environmental management,
and cultural heritage.
encouraging people to
drop in, take a look at the
displays, talk to our staff and
pick up some information to
take away with them.
“In addition to our
regular ongoing displays,
twice a month we will be
bringing in some of our
Coal & Allied experts in
these specific areas for
members of the community
to speak to in dedicated
information sessions.
“The Singleton shopfront
held two employment
and training sessions in
August and October, two
community investment
sessions in September and
two noise management
sessions in November with
all topics well received.
“We look forward to
continuing these sessions
