Auxiliary Profile: Carolyn Gould
Carolyn Gould has been an
Auxilian and member of its Board
of Managers for about 10 years. For
the past five years, she has served
as chair of the Project Grants
Committee, which evaluates
requests from hospital departments
for grants to provide patient and
family support items not included
in the hospital’s budget.
The Committee, which is comprised of the Auxiliary
President, Treasurer and Auxiliary committee chairs,
awarded nearly $80,000 in project grants in 2009. In
addition to her role as Chair of Project Grants, Carolyn is
also a member of the Auxiliary’s Gift Shop Committee.
Besides her Auxiliary roles, Carolyn also lends her
talents to YNHH in other important ways. She
volunteers weekly on the hospital’s Newborn Special
Care Unit, cuddling tiny, fragile babies. She is also a
volunteer hospital snow driver for the winter season and
is on call to transport essential employees to work at
YNHH during snow emergencies.
Originally from Seattle, Washington, Carolyn has
lived with her family in North Haven for many years.
After practicing law in New Haven for almost 40 years,
Carolyn retired at the end of 2008 and has found many
ways to keep busy during her new-found free time. A
music lover, Carolyn plays violin in the Yale Medical
Symphony Orchestra at the Yale Medical School. She
also enjoys attending musical events and the ballet, both
locally and in New York City and is an active member of
the Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven.
HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING
“Twas the season…”
Six-year-old Daniel Posta of Poughkeepsie, New York,
used his magic touch to light up the tree on the Hunter
Courtyard and officially kick off the hospital’s holiday
season at the Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary’s 23rd
annual holiday tree lighting in December. Marna
Borgstrom, YNHH President and CEO, served as Master of
Ceremonies for the event and the Mutual Respect Holiday
Chorale also performed at the event. Accompanying
Daniel were his parents Dawn and Daniel Posta.

Smilow Cancer Hospital opening from the ground up

“This is a special day for all of us,” said Marna P.
Borgstrom, president and CEO, who personally greeted
many of the thousands of employees who visited. “It
was a lot harder and took us longer to get here, but this
hospital truly reflects our shared vision and values as an
organization. We are now ready to treat cancer patients
in a hospital totally designed with their needs in mind.”
Clinicians at Smilow Cancer Hospital began treating
outpatients in Radiation Oncology in October. The
phased-in opening of the entire building will be
completed in May.
The Auxiliary pledged $500,000 towards the Smilow
Cancer Hospital which will be used for the second floor
Diagnostic Ultrasound Suite.
