WINTER 2010
MESSAGE
FROM THE PRESIDENT
THE NEWSLETTER OF THE YALE-NEW HAVEN HOSPITAL AUXILIARY
Smilow Cancer Hospital
opening from the ground up
Hello Friends,
Fall seems to be the busiest time for the
Auxiliary, and this past fall was no exception!
Our annual meeting in September was a great
success with 107 attendees, and a wonderful
speaker Dr. Tom Lynch. Also, having the dinner
event on the water catching the sunset was a plus. The Atrium Gift
Shop and Fitzgerald’s Florist presented a beautiful array of gifts and
arrangements for guests to peruse and purchase.
Many of our committees were very active during this time period,
also. It was exciting to see our new members becoming involved with
projects on their respective committees. Many new ideas and
processes are being discussed and it is great to feel all of the energy.
Membership renewal letters were mailed in October and we’re
trusting that everyone has sent in their renewals for this year.
The Opera and Wine Lovers Dinner was wonderful. More than 65
people attended and enjoyed the excellent food from the Opera
Lovers Cookbook. The author, Francine Sagan, spoke about Italian
opera and referenced food with the operas and composers. Who will
ever forget her description of her grandmother whipping cream to
the tempo of Figaro? The Wines from Sensi Vineyards were enjoyed
by all and the soloists from the Yale School of Music exceeded
everyone’s expectations. It was not only an exceptional evening, but
profitable as well.
The Toy Closet Committee was in full swing with their annual
holiday deliveries and the Auxiliary conference room once again
became a beehive of activity with packing and sorting.
Kicking off 2010, the Toy Closet committee teamed with the
University of New Haven on January 30 and Quinnipiac University
on February 6 to host toy drives, both of which were successful
bringing in dozens of new toy donations to the program. Additional
drives are planned over the coming months.
It is my hope to keep the momentum going strong this year with
new ideas for projects, toy drives, fundraising activities and social
events. Share your ideas for a fun, exciting and lucrative 2010!
Diane Petra
Marna Borgstrom, YNHH president and CEO, along with
hospital and community leaders, officially cut the ribbon
dedicating the Smilow Cancer Hospital.
After years of intricate planning and painstaking preparation, Smilow
Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven was officially dedicated on
October 21, 2009. At the ribbon-cutting event, which was attended
by more than 400 guests, including trustees, donors and community
leaders, speaker after speaker talked about the lives that would be saved and
extended because patients could now receive treatment at the most
comprehensive cancer hospital in the Northeast.
Special guests included Governor M. Jodi Rell, who told the audience
that she was in awe of this building. “We are standing at the doorstep of
something great,” the governor said. “But this building won’t save lives –
this is a building that will allow people to save lives. To accomplish this
during an economic downturn is a testament to the will and vision of Yale-
New Haven, Yale School of Medicine and Yale Cancer Center.”
Joel E. Smilow, former chair, chief executive officer and president of
Playtex Products, Inc., and naming benefactor for Smilow Cancer Hospital,
said the contribution he and his wife, Joan, made to the hospital that now
bears his name is an investment. “It will pay dividends every year. Every
year, thousands of patients will benefit – they will receive the dividends.”
The day before the official dedication, YNHH employees were invited to
preview Smilow during employee celebrations held in the building’s soaring
two-story lobby.
Auxiliary Profile: Carolyn Gould
Carolyn Gould has been an
Auxilian and member of its Board
of Managers for about 10 years. For
the past five years, she has served
as chair of the Project Grants
Committee, which evaluates
requests from hospital departments
for grants to provide patient and
family support items not included
in the hospital’s budget.
The Committee, which is comprised of the Auxiliary
President, Treasurer and Auxiliary committee chairs,
awarded nearly $80,000 in project grants in 2009. In
addition to her role as Chair of Project Grants, Carolyn is
also a member of the Auxiliary’s Gift Shop Committee.
Besides her Auxiliary roles, Carolyn also lends her
talents to YNHH in other important ways. She
volunteers weekly on the hospital’s Newborn Special
Care Unit, cuddling tiny, fragile babies. She is also a
volunteer hospital snow driver for the winter season and
is on call to transport essential employees to work at
YNHH during snow emergencies.
Originally from Seattle, Washington, Carolyn has
lived with her family in North Haven for many years.
After practicing law in New Haven for almost 40 years,
Carolyn retired at the end of 2008 and has found many
ways to keep busy during her new-found free time. A
music lover, Carolyn plays violin in the Yale Medical
Symphony Orchestra at the Yale Medical School. She
also enjoys attending musical events and the ballet, both
locally and in New York City and is an active member of
the Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven.
HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING
“Twas the season…”
Six-year-old Daniel Posta of Poughkeepsie, New York,
used his magic touch to light up the tree on the Hunter
Courtyard and officially kick off the hospital’s holiday
season at the Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary’s 23rd
annual holiday tree lighting in December. Marna
Borgstrom, YNHH President and CEO, served as Master of
Ceremonies for the event and the Mutual Respect Holiday
Chorale also performed at the event. Accompanying
Daniel were his parents Dawn and Daniel Posta.
organization. We are now ready to treat cancer patients
in a hospital totally designed with their needs in mind.”
Clinicians at Smilow Cancer Hospital began treating
outpatients in Radiation Oncology in October. The
phased-in opening of the entire building will be
Hospital Auxiliary has
contributed over $5
million to support the
hospital and its
programs. Auxiliary
Committees offer
assistance, support and
education in a variety of
ways. The Atrium Gift
Shop, managed by a
professional team,
supported by volunteers
and overseen by the Gift
Shop Committee,
generates significant
revenues that support
Auxiliary projects. The
Toy Closet program
sends children home from
their hospital stay, day
surgery or clinic visit
with a new toy. Health
education lectures
provide educational
information to the
community expertly
delivered by noted
YNHH healthcare
professionals. The Project
Grants Committee has
contributed over
$675,000 to departments
for special projects and
distinctive needs. These
projects are just some of
the ways the Auxiliary
works closely with the
hospital to continually
support the hospital’s
needs and community
outreach efforts.

More than 60 guests enjoyed an
evening of fine wine, food and
fellowship at the Auxiliary’s Opera and
Wine Lovers Dinner held on Halloween
evening at the New Haven Lawn Club.
The event featured a sampling and
discussion of menu items from the
Opera Lover’s Cookbook by Francine
Segan, a selection of
fine wines donated by
Sensi Vineyards and
New England Wines
and opera arias by
vocalists from the Yale
School of Music.
Segan, a noted
culinary historian and
food writer, has
appeared on Food
Network, Discovery
and History Channels
and NPR. Sensi
Vineyards has more
than 100 years
experience in the
production and
marketing of quality
Tuscan wines. New
England Wines, a
regional distributor of
wines, also had a wine
expert on hand sharing information about the finest of wines.
A perfect accompaniment to the fine wine and cuisine, vocalists and
musicians from the Yale School of Music entertained guests with an array
of musical renditions.
Diane Petra, Auxiliary president, said, “We were thrilled to bring
together these fine artists representing the best in opera, food and wine for
an incredibly enlightening and entertaining evening. Many guests have
shared what an extraordinary time they had that evening.”
The event, a major fundraiser for the Auxiliary, was coordinated by the
Special Events committee chaired by Rocanne Lucian. Proceeds from the
Opera and Wine Lovers Dinner will benefit special projects of Yale-New
Haven Hospital.
Dr. Tom Lynch prior to his keynote address at the annual meeting.
Smilow Top Doc guest speaker
at annual meeting
Thomas J. Lynch, Jr., MD, physician-in-chief of the new Smilow
Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven and director of Yale Cancer
Center, served as the guest speaker for the 57th annual meeting of the
Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary in September.
At the dinner, held at Pine Orchard Yacht & Country Club in
Branford, Dr. Lynch discussed his vision for the Smilow Cancer
Hospital in his address “Cancer at Smilow 2016,” explaining that 2016
will begin the year marking the 75th anniversary of the first
chemotherapy treatment which was given by Yale physicians in 1942
at what was then called New Haven Hospital.
“Smilow physicians and staff will provide uncompromising clinical
excellence focusing on patient and family centered care,” said Dr.
Lynch. “Our goal is to make Smilow Cancer Hospital the top hospitalbased
cancer program in the country.”
Also at the 2009 annual meeting, which had the highest attendance
in recent history, WTNH-TV News Channel 8 news anchor Ann
Nyberg, a founder of the Toy Closet program, recognized the 2009
Toy Closet award winners.
colorful, multi-panel mural of underwater sea life was designed and painted by renowned
artist Vladimir Shpitalnik and his students from the Paier College of Art in Hamden.
The mural project was funded by the Auxiliary through a project grant. The grant also
funded a new live fish tank and play area for children in the MRI Center’s waiting room.
