Active discussions about development of natural resources<br />

Mäori are interested in<br />

economic development<br />

opportunities, and support a<br />

constructive discussion about<br />

<strong>the</strong> sustainable utilisation of<br />

natural resources.<br />

There are significant economic<br />

growth opportunities for Mäori<br />

and <strong>the</strong> wider New Zealand<br />

economy to realise <strong>the</strong><br />

potential of natural resources.<br />

Taking a constructive and open<br />

approach to discussions on <strong>the</strong><br />

use and development of our<br />

resources will lead to economic growth outcomes that benefit not<br />

just Mäori, but all New Zealanders.<br />

The Srategy and Action Plan recommends <strong>the</strong> creation of a specific<br />

‘resources development forum’ born out of <strong>the</strong> Iwi Chairs’ Forum. This<br />

forum should have a mandate and role to work with Government to<br />

unlock <strong>the</strong> potential of New Zealand’s nationally significant public<br />

resources (both non-nationalised and nationalised). Future prospects<br />

could see Mäori working with industry groups to develop sector<br />

strategies: it’s a conversation all New Zealanders need to be involved<br />

in. It’s also a complex and at times tense discussion. In order to<br />

overcome <strong>the</strong> existing barriers we need to understand <strong>the</strong> costs and<br />

benefits that can be realised. Mäori can participate in a productive<br />

conversation about <strong>the</strong> benefits and opportunities of sustainable<br />

development and use of <strong>the</strong>se resources with all New Zealanders.<br />

Mäori asset holders into<br />

<strong>the</strong> future.<br />

A panel representing business<br />

leaders, <strong>the</strong> rural sector,<br />

national Mäori networks and<br />

science experts are working to<br />

boost Mäori economic growth.<br />

Members include BusinessNZ,<br />

Federation of Mäori<br />

Authorities (FoMA), Federated<br />

Farmers, Industrial Research<br />

Limited (IRL) and <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Urban Mäori Authority<br />

(NUMA). They will focus<br />

on improving engagement<br />

between industry groups and<br />

Mäori enterprise.<br />

“There are many exciting<br />

opportunities for Mäori. With<br />

<strong>the</strong> right sort of mentoring and networks with industry groups,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re’s some real progress to be made in new areas alongside our<br />

Memorandum of Understanding with Federated Farmers, IRL and<br />

NUMA,” said FoMA Chief Executive, <strong>Te</strong> Horipo Karaitiana.<br />

IRL has been working with FoMA and o<strong>the</strong>r Mäori industry partners<br />

to lift performance and productivity.<br />

“The Mäori economy is an important part of <strong>the</strong> NZ Inc journey, so<br />

providing multi-sectorial Mäori businesses with a ‘one stop shop’<br />

to get better value from <strong>the</strong>ir products is vital to New Zealand’s<br />

economic growth. Leveraging and growing <strong>the</strong> $37 billion Mäori<br />

asset base through science and innovation is going to make a<br />

significant impact on <strong>the</strong> New Zealand economy,” said Gavin<br />

Mitchell, IRL’s Industry Engagement General Manager.<br />

National Urban Mäori Authority spokesman John Tamihere says<br />

<strong>the</strong> work embraces Mäori customs, culture and community within<br />

urban centres.<br />

“It is <strong>the</strong> latent talent pool of Mäori entrepreneurial activity that<br />

takes place in cities. It is <strong>the</strong> urban Mäori who will drive and grow<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mäori economy.”<br />
