In modern Sapporo, Japan’s fifth largest city<br />

synonymous with beer, visit the renowned<br />

Sapporo Beer Factory and Shiroi Koibito<br />

Visit Otaru, a port city which gently evokes a<br />

nostalgic mood with its historical buildings,<br />

glassworks shops, cafes and restaurants along its<br />

famous canal.<br />

At Lake Toya and ascend by ropeway to the<br />

summit of Mount Usu, an active volcano. Later,<br />

relax in the onsen waters of Jozankei and<br />

popular spots for cherry blossom viewing during the<br />

season. See the ruins of Fort Goryokaku, Japan’s first<br />

western style fortress, and go up the observation deck<br />

of Goryokaku Tower for panoramic views.<br />

• Take a cable car to the peak of Mount Hakodate. Enjoy<br />

outstanding views of the city’s night lights, considered<br />

one of the world’s finest.<br />

DAY 03 Hakodate/ Lake Toya<br />

• Walking tour of the bustling Hakodate Morning<br />

Market. See how the locals bargain and be astounded<br />

at the crab butchery where the sea dweller are ripped<br />

limb by limb. Sample some fresh crab and various types<br />

of fresh seafood such as raw sea urchin or grilled crab.<br />

• Photo stop at the Hakodate Trappist Convent –<br />

Japan’s first monastery founded by French nuns over a<br />

century ago.<br />

• Walking tour of the restored Kanemori Red Brick<br />

Warehouses which comprise of restaurants, beer halls,<br />

shops and art museums along a waterfront.<br />

• Relax in a steaming onsen and rest your weary<br />

muscles before dinner.<br />

DAY 04 Lake Toya/ Noboribetsu<br />

• Glide to the summit of Mount Usu (an active volcano)<br />

on the Usuzan Ropeway. From its observation decks,<br />

enjoy splendid views of Lake Toya, the nearby Mount<br />

Showa Shinzan and Mount Usu’s crater which still smokes<br />

to this day.<br />

• Entrance to the Toyako Volcano Museum which<br />

focuses on the 1977 and 2000 eruptions of Mount Usu.<br />

Witness how a volcano erupts through interactive<br />

exhibits.<br />

• Visit the Showa Shinzan Bear Park, home to around<br />

100 bears.<br />

• Relax in a steaming onsen before dinner.<br />

DAY 05 Noboribetsu/ Jyozankei<br />

• Photo stop at the spectacular Hell Valley, where the<br />

earth is alive with hot steam vents, sulphurous streams<br />

and other volcanic activity.<br />

• Entrance to the Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura theme<br />

park and step back in time to the glory days of the Edo<br />

Period. Stroll amid a traditional Japanese village, watch<br />

ninjas in action, local merchants hawking their wares<br />

and courtesans performing. You can also don a kimono,<br />

samurai or ninja outfit and have your photo taken (for a fee).<br />

• Relax in a steaming onsen before dinner.<br />

DAY 06 Jyozankei/ Otaru/ Sapporo<br />

• Entrance to the Kitaichi Glass Emporium where you<br />

can see glass blowers at work.<br />

• Entrance to the Otaru Music Box Museum and<br />

showroom with many pretty and intricate music boxes<br />

on display. An ideal place to pick up a souvenir for your<br />

loved ones!<br />

• Walking tour of the beautifully restored Otaru Canal,<br />

with many historic stone warehouses transformed into<br />

shops and cafes. Meet various artists who will present<br />

their works to passing tourists in hope that one may catch<br />

your fancy.<br />

• Enjoy specially brewed coffee at Otaru Coffee House<br />

and take home your cup as a souvenir!<br />
