CONSOLIDATED INDEX TO COMPENDIUM OF BASIC<br />

DOCUMENTS ON THE LAW OF THE SEA<br />

This consolidated index to the compendium of basic documents on the law of<br />

the sea was prepared by the Office of Legal Affairs of the <strong>International</strong> <strong>Seabed</strong><br />

<strong>Authority</strong> with the assistance of a professional indexer. The index contains citations<br />

for the following instruments:<br />

• United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982;<br />

• Resolutions I to IV of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law<br />

of the Sea;<br />

• Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the United Nations<br />

Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982;<br />

• Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the United Nations<br />

Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the<br />

Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory<br />

Fish Stocks; and<br />

• Regulations on Prospecting and Exploration for Polymetallic Nodules in<br />

the Area.<br />

Nomenclature used in the index<br />

Citations for articles in the body of the Convention are preceded by the letters<br />

“LOSC” and given by article number, paragraph, subparagraph and sub-subparagraph<br />

as appropriate, e.g., LOSC/298(1)(a)(ii) denotes article 298, paragraph 1,<br />

subparagraph (a), sub-subparagraph (ii), of the Convention.<br />

Citations for the Preamble of the Convention refer to the operative paragraph<br />

number of the Preamble, e.g., LOSC/Preamble(5) refers to the fifth paragraph of<br />

the Preamble.<br />

Citations for articles in Annex I to Annex IX are in the form “LOSC/A” followed<br />

by the number of each annex in arabic notation (LOSC/A1-LOSC/A9) and the article<br />

number, paragraph and subparagraph, as appropriate, e.g., LOSC/A3/<br />

17(1)(b)(xii) refers to Annex III, article 17, paragraph 1, subparagraph (b), subsubparagraph<br />

(xii).<br />

Citations for Resolutions I to IV of the Third United Nations Conference on the<br />

Law of the Sea are designated by an upper-case “R” followed by the number of each<br />

resolution in arabic notation (R1 to R4) and the paragraph, subparagraph and subsubparagraph<br />

as appropriate, e.g., R2/12(a)(ii) denotes Resolution II, paragraph 12,<br />

subparagraph (a), sub-subparagraph (ii). Citation for the Preambles of Resolutions I<br />

and II refer to the relevant paragraph of the Preamble, preceded by R1/Preamble or<br />

R2/Preamble, as appropriate, and followed by the paragraph number, e.g., R2/Preamble(4)<br />

refers to the fourth paragraph of the Preamble of Resolution II. In the case<br />

of Resolution IV, which contains six annexes, “R4” is followed by the number of the<br />

relevant annex and the article number, e.g. R4/A2 refers to Resolution IV, Annex 2.
