* 09/04-09/09 Principal Investigator: Cannabis Use, Abuse and Dependence:
Exploring Phenotypes NIDA: DA18660-01
This study will collect comprehensive information on patterns of cannabis use, escalation in use and
related harm from twins= full siblings aged 18-30.
* 09/05-09/10 Principal Investigator: Cannabis and Other Illicit Drug Use: A Twin
Study: NIDA R01 DA18267-01
This project is a genetically informative research study of the assessment of cannabis use disorders, stage
of development in and escalation of cannabis and the development of cannabis use disorders, and the
mental health correlates of cannabis use, including escalation to the use of other drugs.
External grants - as Co-Investigator: (current projects marked with an asterisk)
* 07/89-06/08 Co-Investigator: NIAAA 5R37-AA07728-17
(PI: Andrew Heath, D.Phil., Washington University)
Genetic Epidemiologic Models of Alcohol Abuse
The primary research goal is to better understand the correlated actions and interactions of genetic and
environmental risk-factors in the onset and course of alcohol problems and dependence.
* 09/02-08/07 Co-Investigator: NIAAA AA15210-01
(PI: Elliot Nelson, M.D., Washington University)
Childhood Trauma, Parental Alcoholism, and Comorbidity
This project proposes an assessment of adult twin pairs, their full siblings, and parents ascertained via
twins’ participation in a survey of the Australian NHMRC ‘1989’ cohort. The aims are to examine
parental alcoholism, to use data from non-abused co-twins and siblings to control for family background
risk factors, and to more comprehensively determine the contributions of CSA and PA, cluster B
personality disorders, depression, and anxiety disorders, to the inheritance of alcohol dependence risk and
to identify critical intervening variables.
* 09/04-08/09 Co-Investigator: NIAAA AA15210-01
(PI: Andrew Heath, D.Phil., Washington University)

GxE in Early Childhood: Twin Mothers
The primary focus of this study is the prospective characterization of effects on variation in the early
social, emotional and behavioral problems of young children of gene-environment interplay (GE
correlation and GxE interaction).
07/05-06/10 Co-Investigator: NIDA R01 DA18823-01
Genetic Epidemiology of Opioid Dependence in Bulgaria
The goal of this project is to identify the effect on the liability to opiate dependence of specific candidate
genes (including opioid, cannabinoid, dopamine and serotonin receptor genes), including gene-gene and
gene-environment interactions, in a targeted sample of 2500 opiate-dependent individuals and 2500
controls matched on gender, ethnicity and place of birth.
