North Devon District Hospital
North Devon District hospital is a small friendly District General Hospital situated
near to Barnstaple in a beautiful area of Devon. The hospital serves a population of
160, 000 with a Paediatric population of approximately 35,000. This significantly
increases in the holiday season. Paediatric Services are based on Caroline Thorpe
Ward which has 16 nominal beds shared with other specialities such as general
surgery, ENT and orthopaedics. There are also 4 acute assessment beds and a 2
bedded Paediatric HDU. Approximately 2500 patients are seen on the ward /
admitted per year.
The Paediatric Outpatient Suite is on the same floor as the general ward and
includes a nurse led investigation unit. General Paediatric clinics are also held in
peripheral hospitals. Trainees are timetabled to attend outpatient clinics and
encouraged to see patients with supervision. There are a number of visiting clinics
held by specialists from Bristol including Cardiology, Nephrology, Urology,
Endocrinology, Oncology, Genetics and Neurology.
Paediatric Intensive care is provided jointly with anaesthetists in the general ITU
where there is a designated paediatric cubicle providing level 2 care in accordance
with Bristol PICU’s regional protocol.
The Neonatal unit is a well established level 1 unit with facilities for CPAP and short
term ventilation. The delivery rate is approximately 1500 per year. Plymouth is the
regional Level 3 unit taking all intensive care babies except those requiring surgery
or cardiac care who are transferred to Bristol.
Our ST3 / ST4 trainees have the chance to consolidate their general paediatric and
neonatal experience in a well supported environment. The middle grade rota is
supported by Resident Consultant shifts covering Monday – Thursday evenings.
