PARAphrase/transition to practice opportunities TRANSITION TO Practice Opportunities Practice Opportunities Practice Opportunities AMA Physician Locum Services (PLS) is an option for new graduates to jump-start their careers. Being an AMA locum does not preclude physicians from doing private locums or other work. No minimum amount of service or time/term is required from locums. In addition, there is no cost to join or work through PLS, and PLS does not retain any portion of your billings. When providing PLS locum service, physicians determine their own schedule and service locations. PLS staff assist with the administrative aspects of locum assignments such as scheduling of assignments, booking, and paying for locum travel. PLS’s flexibility allows locum physicians to "try-out" the program to see if it appeals, without being locked in to a service commitment. The program is quite flexible and will fit any schedule. With the locum program, you work when available and receive excellent remuneration. Recentlygraduated PLS locum physicians have commented on the benefits of exposure to widely-varied professional experiences, across a number of diverse practice environments. Locum opportunities include provision of clinic and/or ER coverage in practices ranging from solo practitioner offices, ARPs, FCCs and multi-physician clinics, or provision of specialist service in one of more than a dozen specialties. The rural physicians/specialists receiving PLS locum coverage continue to express their appreciation of the service, and in some cases, state that PLS was essential in their decision to continue in rural practice. Specialist locum coverage is primarily provided to the regional centres outside Calgary and Edmonton (Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Grand Prairie, and Fort McMurray). Family medicine locum coverage is provided to more than seventy smaller rural communities located throughout the province. Locum coverage requests are varied, and depending upon the community, can be for the duration of a 12- or 24-hour shift, a weekend, or up to four weeks. PLS operates by advising locum physicians about locum coverage requests received by the program. Locums then advise PLS of assignments they wish to accept. Locums have the opportunity to contact the physician requesting the locum coverage to obtain assignment details. If the locum physician decides to accept the assignment, PLS will book travel and facilitate the paperwork associated with the assignment. Working through PLS also eliminates the need to negotiate the terms and conditions of locum coverage. After each assignment, locum physicians submit their billings to PLS, and PLS provides payment of subsidy, benefits, and claims/oncall exceeding the income guarantee. Assistance with understanding 25 the Alberta Schedule of Medical Benefits to facilitate locum billing is also available. As an overview of PLS benefits, a minimum daily income guarantee is provided by PLS. PLS also pays locum travel costs, including flights and/or rental cars, or a mileage allowance for private vehicle use. PLS makes travel arrangements for you based on your preferences. Remuneration and benefits from Alberta locum opportunities are also available to physicians based in other provinces (and most areas of the United States) and travel is subsidized or fully covered. In addition to payment of the guarantee and coverage of travel costs, a travel honoraria is paid: $250 for travel of less than four hours; $500 for travel of more than four hours (i.e. $500 to $1,000 for your round trip). Accommodation is provided free of charge by Alberta Health Services or the local physician. Locums also receive benefits such as Rural Remote Northern Program (RRNP) premiums on their claim payments, for service provided in eligible communities. PARA is partnering with the Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) to host the Second Annual "Resident-Recruiter Speed Dating" events in Calgary and Edmonton. Join us for an evening in which you can meet and mingle with Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health physician recruiters, to learn about practice opportunities across Alberta. There will also be information about assistance to help you transition into practice. Meet with the people who are "in the know" about urban and rural practice opportunities. The "speed date" format will allow resident physicians to obtain information from multiple recruiters on the many opportunities, including those inside and outside of Calgary and Edmonton. There is a large variety of rural practice positions, which allow new physicians the opportunity to apply a broad range of skills in family medicine as well as some specialty areas. Rural physicians benefit from a varied and multi-disciplinary practice, rural financial incentives, and access to recreation and outdoor activities urbanites have to drive hours to find.
