The other is a Paid Obituary, costing $75, which allows families to publish extended death notice information of their own choice and may include a photograph. Death Notices & Paid Obituaries should be submitted through a funeral home to: obits@turley.com. Exceptions will be made only when the family provides a death certificate and must be pre-paid. Quabbin Reservoir Remembrance Ball planned for April 27 Ware Town Hall will be site of celebration THE SENTINEL • THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2013 WARE - The Friends of Quabbin will be sponsoring a couple of significant events during 2013 to commemorate the sacrifices of the more than 2500 Swift River Valley residents who gave up their homes and their way of life to make way for the construction of the Quabbin Reservoir, which provides a viable and sustained water supply for the city of Boston and other communities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. There will be a 75th Remembrance Ball held in the Ware Town Hall on Saturday, April 27. Planners are excited about this location for its nostalgic value and similarity to the Enfield Town Hall where the Farewell Ball was held on Wednesday evening, April 27, 1938. The four towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott were officially disincorporated on April 28, 1938. Many of they replicate the events of April 27, 1938. A bass and keyboard duo will start off the evening’s social hour beginning at 7 p.m. by playing music from the late 1920s through the early 1940s. For Saint Francis Pack 507 Cub Scouts the Hadley Lowe’s was the scene for the first Pack 507 test drive on the store’s Pinewood Derby track. Cars of all shapes, sizes and weights rolled to the finish line accompanied by cheering Cubs, laughing parents and smiling store clerks. After the dust settled it was clear the 507 Cubs had some mighty fast cars for the Metacomet Small Pack Derby. Saint Francis Pack 507 Cubs Scouts will be holding their pirate recruitment on Tuesday night, March 26 at the St. Francis parish hall on Park Street. Doors open at 6 p.m. sharp for recruits of all ages to come and join the fun-paced unit. This is one of the largest and most competitive art shows in the region and generally less than half of the entries are accepted. The show covers all forms of art which will be on exhibit four weekends from March 23 through April 14. Darr-Morton is affiliated with the Les Campbell Sky Meadow Photo Gallery. Campbell also has an accepted image in this exhibit titled “Moonlit Valley.” The Sky Meadow Gallery is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. and other times by appointment. BELCHERTOWN - Join DCR Aquatic Biologist Paula Packard for a program titled “DCR and Anglers: Working Together to Protect Quabbin’s Water Supply and Fisheries” at the Quabbin Visitor Center on Sunday, March 24 at 2 p.m. Following the discovery of Zebra Mussels in western Massachusetts in 2009, the Department of Conservation and Recreation- Quabbin Section instituted a program to prevent the spread of all aquatic invasive species (AIS) to the Quabbin Reservoir. The program included a boat seal program for private boats entering the Quabbin to ensure that boats are not inadvertently spreading species from one body to another. While Zebra Mussels have garnered most of the AIS attention, there are other serious threats lurking. Packard will discuss the outcome of this program, the results of pond surveys and the serious threat from these other new invasive species. The program is free and appropriate to all ages. Reservations for the program are suggested by calling the Quabbin Visitor Center at 413-323-7221. The Visitor Center is located in the DCR Quabbin Administration Building, accessed through the Main (west) Entrance to Quabbin Park on Route 9 in Belchertown, three miles east of the Route 9/Route 202 intersection. THE SENTINEL • THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2013 PAGE 3 Katelyn Coty receives prestigious internship scholarship to teach in Ghana BOSTON – Wheelock College student Katelyn Coty, of Belchertown, was awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship for educational and career development for American students studying oversees. The scholarship funded Coty for a seven-week immersion experience working as a junior high school teaching intern in Kpongunor, Ghana. The scholarship allowed Coty, a Special Education and Human Growth and Development/Psychology major, to apply her classroom knowledge and fieldwork experience. Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, the scholarship encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations. Coty became aware of the scholarship opportunity from Wheelock’s Center for International Partnerships and Programs and the Student Success Department. “Katelyn’s passion to serve in this fashion is exemplary and consistent with the core values embedded in the Wheelock mission: to improve the lives of children and families globally,” said Dr. Linda A. Davis, Dean of International Programs and Partnerships. Coty said she chose to apply for the scholarship to teach in Ghana because it was her desire “to experience a different culture and understand the world outside the bubble I live in.” Ghana, presented some challenges Katelyn Coty with her students in Kpongunor, Ghana. including, different language and limited resources yet Coty resourcefully overcame while teaching mathematics, science, information and communication technology, and physical education. She learned quickly to adapt her teaching style to best fit the needs of her students, making use of a variety of simple aids and illustrating concepts. Additionally, she used natural resources around her including aspects of Ghanaian culture, such as the Ampe (jumping game) Turley Publications courtesy photo to help her students understand probability. On weekends, Coty had the opportunity to travel. Touring the Slave Dungeons on the Cape Coast was a life changing experience, giving her the opportunity to learn about the history of the Triangular Slave Trade where it happened. Coty shares, that at that moment, standing in the dungeons, she was hit with the harsh reality of the past, hearing stories of slavery—an experience that had more power than a photo or book could ever convey. Overcoming obstacles helped Coty gain confidence in herself as a person and as a teacher: “Learning about this culture through experience is much different than learning it in a book. I was able to experience the customs, the food, my struggles, my strengths, and that there is hope in the world,” she said. In the near future, Coty hopes to be able to return to Ghana to see how her students are progressing and to be able tell them how proud she is of their dedication and hard work. “[In the US], we are lucky to have a form of education and people in our lives to support us,” said Coty. “I want to take that support and share it with my students in Ghana. In the future, I want these students to be recognized for their hard work towards school and to improving their future.” Coty’s experience in Ghana has helped shape her future; she now knows that she can push herself out of her comfort zone. With a career goal of teaching within special education focusing on students with social/emotional disabilities she plans to continue her education at graduate school in ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis). In her future classrooms, Coty plans to incorporate her experience in Ghana as a lesson, a unit, or a theme. Moving in 2013?
