The countdown generally begins immediately after the holiday has past. With the holiday coming just once a year, it can be a long, brutal wait for everyone. The constant questions From where Isit Aimee M. Henderson, EDITOR of “When is Christmas?” or “How many more days until Christmas?” can make the wait seem so much longer. But, in the Henderson household the long awaited countdown begins at the close of each book sale at the library. That’s right, my kids can’t wait until it’s time once again for the biannual Friends of Clapp Memorial Library Book Sale. We’re lucky though because the sale comes twice a year, making the wait so much easier. In the past I’ve waited until the week before the sale begins to tell them it’s just around the corner, but now that they are getting older (and can read) they recognize the big bi-fold sign on the library lawn announcing the sale. That sign is set up pretty early on, which leaves my 6-year-old asking “How many days left until the book sale?” Finally, I can tell her “It’s finally here!” On Monday night after tucking the kids into bed I told them we’d head to the book sale on Tuesday after school for our first look around. Generally we try to make it there two times during the week – one being on Saturday for half-price day. And though I know I’ve written about this hidden gem of a sale in the past, I just can’t say enough good things about it. Each sale we go to we walk away with piles upon piles of new-to-us books for such a minimal cost. There is no where else that can even come close to providing such a huge selection of books, priced so low. The best part – it’s all to support our own library programs, which my family takes advantage of a lot. My daughter and I were recently out shopping at a local market and there were some books on clearance. Being the bookworm she is she was immediately drawn to them. She almost had me convinced to buy her one, but then I reminded her that we would be going to the book sale in a matter of days and she would be able to get more books for that same amount of money. Her face lit up so much at those words - you would have thought I said we were going to Disney World. The snow, sleet and rain on Tuesday did not keep us from our trip out to the library book sale either, and we’ll be back again on Saturday. There are still plenty of selections for you and your family, even with just three days left of the sale. Then, the countdown begins until the fall book sale! The remaining hours are: Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Senior citizens will receive a 25 percent discount on Friday. Saturday is “Half Price Day.” FROM OUR FILES by Cliff McCarthy From 70 Years Ago (March 26, 1941): AN APPEAL TO THE TOWNSPEOPLE “At a meeting of the board of selectmen last Friday night, a complaint was received in regard to all-day parking in front of local stores. Limited parking signs were suggested, but the board felt that with the cooperation of the public this would not be necessary. It is therefore requested that people who work in defense plants, and local workers, refrain from all-day parking in front of the stores and leave their cars alongside of the common. Otherwise some further action will be necessitated.” TO LEAD HOUR OF MUSIC “Byron A. Hudson has been engaged to conduct an assembly hour of music in the high school one day each week. He began his duties on Wednesday afternoon. This program is made possible by income from the Longley music fund. It has been sometime since anything has been done in music at the high school and it is hoped the these inspirational and educational music hours will be of real value in these crucial days. Mr. Hudson has for some years been choirmaster at the Congregational church.” From 40 Years Ago (March 22, 1973): SMOKING BLAMED IN BLAZE “Careless disposal of smoking materials was listed as the probable cause of a fire that destroyed the home See FILES, Page 9 Letters Seniors need healthy meals To the Editor: A while back, Mr. William Korzenowski, the director of the Belchertown Senior Center, wrote a letter for publication in The Sentinel, in his efforts to bring more substantial and nourishing meals to senior citizens in this community, via the Meals On Wheels program. One of the things he mentioned was the fact that the program as it now exists serves meals, which are laced with chemicals, as preservatives and flavor and color enhancers, among other things. The following is a list of ingredients I copied from the label on a frozen meal delivered to a neighbor and friend for last Thanksgiving. (This is the only meal she ever got with a list of ingredients. I think such a list should be mandatory.): INGREDIENTS: TURKEY BREAST SLICE: Turkey broth and 2 percent or less of the following: Dextrose, sugar, modified food starch, salt, sodium citrate, carrageenan, potassium phosphate, sodium phosphate, sodium 2013 Turley Election Policy This newspaper will print free self-submitted statements of candidacy combined together in a special issue on April 18. All candidates running in both contested and uncontested races are being asked to submit their statements to the editor to include only biographical and campaign platform details no later than Monday, April 8. Letters to the editor of no more than 250 words from supporters endorsing specific candidates or discussing campaign issues are limited to three total per candidate during the election season. No election letters will appear in the final edition before the election. We reserve the right to edit all statements of candidacy and letters to the editor to meet our guidelines. As a hometown newspaper, state, county and federal candidates in contested races who reside privately in our main coverage town(s) are offered one staff written feature story at the time of their official announcement appearing at least two months before the election date. However, these same hometown candidates aren’t allowed to submit a separate candidate statement or listing in our special election edition. If a state or federal candidate living in our direct coverage town(s) is running in an uncontested race, no feature story interview will be granted. That information will be included in the general story that runs the week before the election. That story contains general information, including the names of all the candidates who will appear on the ballots and polling information. diacetate. THE SENTINEL • THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2013 PAGE 7 HOLY WEEK SERVICES St. Francis of Assisi Church BELCHERTOWN - Reverend Vernon Decoteau, Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Belchertown, strongly encourages his parishioners to participate in the following events of Holy Week so that they may really know the joy, peace and happiness that their faith can bring. The celebration of Palm Sunday will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 and continue Sunday, March 24 at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Also on Palm Sunday at 2:30 p.m. several priests will be available in the church to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the entire parish. On Wednesday, March 27 the Way of the Cross will be prayed at 6 p.m. followed by Mass at 6:30 p.m. On Holy Thursday, the traditional “Pot Luck Supper” will take place in the Pine Room beginning at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to bring a food item and share this special meal with fellow parishioners. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper will follow at 7 p.m. in the church, followed by adoration in the chapel until 10 p.m. On Good Friday, the children’s Way of the Cross will take place in the church at noon. The traditional service of commemorating the Lord’s Passion, veneration of the cross and communion will take place at 3 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. High School students should either plan on attending the 2:10 p.m. or 6:10 p.m. presentation of the “The Passion” by Joe Castillo. On Holy Saturday the great Easter Vigil will take place at 8 p.m., beginning with the lighting of the Easter fire outside and the procession of light into the church. This is the Church’s greatest liturgy inviting everyone to enter into the great mystery of faith regarding the death and resurrection of the Lord. Easter Sunday Masses will be celebrated at 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., and 10:30 a.m. Father Decoteau wishes that the joy of Easter fill everyone’s hearts with peace and hope. This wonderful event is a great way to help raise money to give to six local charities. This year McCarthy’s Pub raised $18,609 towards our charity choice - The Shriners’ Hospital. I would like to thank first off my wonderful team of plungers “The Shivering Shamrocks.” They were amazing in helping raise money not to mention braving the cold elements this year’s plunge offered. Also my wonderful loyal customers and friends who individually contributed through coupon books and shivering shamrock pledge purchases and other ways help so much in their support and contributions.
