Want to help?
Anyone wishing to support the
day-care center campaign can mail
donations directly to:
P.O. Box 848, Davidson, NC 28036.
The center also has a Web site with
more information and a secure link
to allow online donations: www.ecrsa.org/davidsondaycare.
struction program concentration and
10 years’ teaching experience, O’Neil
“brings a new level of professional training
and development to the center,” officials
said in a press release. O’Neil
has taught in nursery and elementary
schools in Wisconsin and High Point
and worked in the state-funded More
at Four Program.
O’Neil’s credentials will go a long
way to improving the center’s state rating,
board member Eileen Keeley has
said previously. The center’s rating has
slipped from four to two stars.
“I am overwhelmed by the response
and support from the Lake Norman
community,” Board Chairwoman
Carol Higham said in the press release.
“Thanks to this generosity, we
are able to refocus and restructure.
Courtenay’s enthusiasm, passion and
experience will help revitalize the
center.”
The board also appointed a task force
to suggest how a new business model
will put the nonprofit center on sound
financial footing. The center, founded
40 years ago after the death of three
children in a house fire, has depended
for years on state reimbursements for a
portion of families who couldn’t afford
full tuition. In the recession, that state
support has all but dried up.
John Venzon, who has served as the
center’s interim controller for the past
30 days, will continue in that role and
also lead the task force. Venzon has
worked for two Fortune 50 companies,
and his company, JNV Financials, now
consults with charities and small businesses.
Besides Venzon and O’Neil,
other task force members are:
• Lib McGregor Simmons, pastor
of Davidson College Presbyterian
Church, who oversees her church’s
weekday preschool program.
• Jeff Ready, product service communications
and contracts compliance
manager for Lowes Corp.
• Lory Morrow, director of New
Leader for New Schools, a nonprofit
working with Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Schools, and a member of the day-care
board.
• Fuji Lozada, an associate professor
at Davidson College and parent of
a Davidson-Cornelius Day Care alumnus.
• Cindy Broadway, of Child Care Resources.
Venzon thanked John Woods and Jeff
Speakers and topics include:
Tarte, the mayors of Davidson and Cornelius,
for helping gain the support of
churches in the fundraising campaign
and assemble the task force.
The churches that have made commitments
of support are: Church of
the Good Shepherd, Davidson College
Presbyterian Church, Davidson United
Methodist Church and St. Alban’s
Episcopal Church, all in Davidson;
Cornelius Presbyterian Church, Bethel
Presbyterian Church and Mt. Zion
Methodist Church, all in Cornelius;
and New Birth Church, Grace Covenant
Church and St. Mark Catholic
Church, all in Huntersville. q
