News Ruth Mullen HUNTERSVILLE – Ruth P. Mullen, 84, of Huntersville, died Sept. 19. A longtime Huntersville resident, Mrs. Mullen retired from the real estate business in 1998. A member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, she served on the finance committee, sang in the choir and chaired the Altar Guild for decades. Her husband, Thomas L. Mullen Jr., died in 1978. Survivors include sons Tom Mullen and wife, Diana, Mooresville, and Patrick Mullen, Huntersville; a granddaughter; and three stepgrandchildren. A funeral service was held Sept. 24 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Sarah D. Hollar. Memorials: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Raymer Funeral Home was in charge. Carl Canipe HUNTERSVILLE – Carl Richard Canipe, 62, of Charlotte, died Sept. 20 at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte. Born Feb. 8, 1947, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Canipe was a son of the late Carl Leonard and Brenda Johnson Canipe. He was a lifetime member of Independence Hill Baptist Church and retired after 28 years with Overnight Transportation. The herald Weekly deaths His son, Robert Allen Canipe, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Mary Virginia “Ginger” Canipe; sons Carl Richard “Ricky” Canipe Jr. and wife, Secret, Concord, Scott Puckett and wife, Robin, Dallas, N.C., Robert Puckett and wife, Wendy, Berea, Ky.; daughters Kim Parsons and husband, Greg, Salisbury, Melinda Hill and husband, Glenn, Davidson, Melissa Adkins and husband, Scott, Cleveland, N.C.; his brother, Dennis Canipe, Concord; his sister, Ann Canipe, Matthews; and 13 grandchildren. A funeral service was held Sept. 24 at Raymer Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Don Newell, with burial at Independence Hill Baptist Church cemetery. Memorials: American Diabetes Association, 222 S. Church St., suite 336-M, Charlotte, NC. Estalene Sherrill HUNTERSVILLE – Estalene Mundy Sherrill, 80, of Mooresville, died Sept. 21 at Huntersville Oaks. Born March 14, 1929, in Mooresville, Mrs. Sherrill was a daughter of the late Flake and Zella Mundy. She retired after 36 years with Bell South and was active in The Pioneers. Her husband, Clifford Sherrill, preceded her in death. Survivors include sisters Tommie Ann Bost and husband, Joe, and Joan Bustle, all of Cornelius. A funeral service was held Sept. 23 at Raymer Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Mike Bailey, with burial at Iredell Memorial Gardens. Memorials: Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 10900 Zion St., Cornelius, NC 28031. Sharon Brown DAVIDSON – Sharon Kay Tucker Brown, 47, of Davidson, died Sept. 21 at her home. Born Sept. 16, 1962, in Stanly County, Mrs. Brown was the daughter of Lee and Joyce Rhyne, Albemarle. She was involved in the outreach ministries of St. Alban’s Church. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Mark Houston Brown, and sons Kris and Dylan, of the home. A memorial service was held Sept. 24 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. David Buck. Memorials: St. Alban’s Outreach Program, P.O. Box 970, Davidson, NC 28036. Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville, was in charge. Helen Bumgarner HUNTERSVILLE – Helen Margie Bumgarner, 82, of Huntersville, died Sept. 26 at Old Knox Commons. Born Feb. 19, 1927, in Mooresville, Mrs. Bumgarner was the daughter of the late George Richard Fleenor and Nancy Beulah Lee. She retired from University Hospital. Her husband, Doc Bumgarner, preceded her in death. Survivors include sons Billy Bumgarner and wife, Pam, Union Grove, Gary Bumgarner and wife, Ronda, Troutman, Tony Bumgarner, Huntersville, and Mike Bumgarner and wife, Debbie, Huntersville; her daughter; Nancy Bumgarner, Wilmington; sisters Norma Cross and Patricia Irvin, both of Huntersville, 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Huntersville Presbyterian Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Rick Felts. During this tenure of these un-frugal commissioners, the anticipated debt of Cornelius will have nearly doubled by 2010 to approximately $17 million with a debt service of approximately $2.9 million. While some will call this a necessary increase, no one will call it fiscally responsible. I did not understand the commissioner’s bold statement of “just not possible” until I studied the record on spending. He is right. “It is just not possible” for any commissioner who spends tax dollars with the reckless abandon of the current establishment in Washington, D.C. It is because of the worn-out model of political “business-as-usual” that Cornelius needs new town commissioners. I believe Cornelius needs to find new and creative ways to provide better leadership through a process of fiscal responsibility. – Robert J. Floyd Jr., Cornelius For Holly Crest? Won’t get my vote Your story “Holly Crest complex gets final board approval” conveniently left out the names of those town commissioners that voted in favor of the 456-unit apartment complex to be built adjacent to the congested N.C. 73, Exit 25 corridor. Please reprint their names so that the frustrated Huntersville citizens who live along or travel through that corridor can clearly know who not to cast a vote for at election time. I was especially disappointed to decipher that Commissioner Brian Sisson, who lives along the corridor and is usually a loud advocate for traffic reduction, quietly voted the other way this time. Makes me wonder why. The town is already at least 10 years behind development with respect to road infrastructure thanks to the lack of local vision and leadership – and yes, funding support from the state. So why vote to pile on more? Let us citizens get a little breathing room first. Or at least, hope we will, before we get further boxed in with yet another culture-depleting fast food chain, shopping strip, drugstore, or apartment complex in this case. – Steve Pegram, Huntersville Editor’s Note: “Holly Crest complex gets final board approval” reported a 4-to-1 vote to approve Holly Crest, with only Commissioner Ron Julian dissenting. He’s not planning on fooling around I have lots of friends who call things to my attention that they think might amuse or inspire me as I crank out this cantankerous column each week. One of my best sources wrote to tell me about the death of the oldest person in the world. She died Sept. 11 in Los Angeles. Her name was Gertrude Baines, and she was 115 years old. I did a little research southern fried and found that preacher she was born on April 6, 1894, in Shellman, Ga. Her grandparents were slaves. I found a picture that shows her as a handsome woman who looks younger than me. harold bales Guinness World Records released the announcement of her death. She received a letter from President Obama.
